If you are looking for a more luxurious memory foam mattress and don’t mind paying a little more for it, then the Puffy Lux is a great choice.

The Puffy Lux uses softer foams which feel plush and contour more easily around your body. And their use of Cooling Cloud foam ensures you sleep cool.

Puffy is so confident about the quality and longevity of their soft foam mattress, they stand behind it with a lifetime warranty – a rarity among memory foam mattresses.

In this 10-minute review of the Puffy Lux, I'll cover what I learned during my two weeks sleeping in a Queen-sized Puffy Lux.

About Puffy

Puffy is a relative newcomer to the online mattress industry.

They officially launched in 2017 and have since become quite popular and have garnered thousands of positive customer reviews.

The company does not operate a brick and mortar store; they only sell their mattresses online and deliver them rolled up in a box.

Note: the Puffy Lux is one of the two mattresses Puffy sells.

The other is the original Puffy mattress, which we also rate highly.

Social Impact

Puffy Mattress

Puffy runs a giving program where they donate mattresses to needy children when customers post photos of themselves jumping on the Puffy bed on social media. You can learn how to participate here.

They also manage a social media program where they donate a mattress for every 20 posts with a picture or video of the Puffy mattress. (See the full details here.)

In addition to these programs, Puffy boosts their local economy by doing all manufacturing in the United States, which ensures their products are high quality, safe and eco-friendly.

Price

The Puffy Lux mattress is considerably pricier compared to other online memory foam mattresses.

A queen size goes for $1,499 (after $300 discount), which is $500 more than the cheapest memory foam mattress.

But the Puffy Lux mattress is 2-3″ thicker, uses higher quality foams and offers a lifetime warranty – which accounts for the extra cost.

Remember, you can use Klarna if you don’t want to pay the full sum at once.

Here are the Puffy Lux prices with their latest $300 discount applied:

Twin $845
Twin XL $1,049
Full $1,299
Queen $1,499
King $1,699
Cal King $1,699

101-Night In-home Trial

Puffy Mattress

You get 101 nights to test the Puffy Lux mattress in your home. Puffy asks that you sleep on the mattress for at least 30 nights before deciding to make a return.

If you decide to return the mattress, Puffy will find a charity or a recycling center in your area and arrange for the mattress to be picked up from your home.

There are no return or restocking fees.

But if you bought the mattress from Hawaii or Alaska, where Puffy charges for shipping, your refund will not include the amount you paid for shipping.

Lifetime Warranty

Puffy Mattress

Lifetime warranties are becoming more common among online mattresses.

But it is still surprising to see a memory foam mattress that is guaranteed for life.

The only other affordable online memory foam mattress I know about that offers a lifetime warranty is Nectar.

Puffy’s lifetime warranty is also non-prorated. They guarantee a new mattress within the first ten years if the current one develops any defect.

After ten years, they will either replace or repair the mattress. You’ll have to pay for shipping, but they will refund shipping costs if they confirm that the defect is the fault of the manufacturer.

Puffy also offers an optional Quick Sleep option. At any time after ten years, instead of repairing your old mattress, you can get a new one at half the cost and keep your old one if you like.

See more warranty details on Puffy’s website.

Puffy Mattress

FedEx shipping is free within the continental US.

If you are ordering from Alaska or Hawaii, applicable freight charges will be shown at checkout.

The mattress will arrive in 2-5 days depending on your location.

You’ll be able to track the mattress as soon as it ships.

Delivery and Setup

The mattress arrives in a compact box measuring 19 by 42 inches.

Puffy does not offer white glove delivery, but two people can easily carry it inside.

Setting up the mattress was easy. Once you cut away the packaging and roll it onto the foundation, it begins to puff up immediately.

You can sleep on it after a few hours, although it can take a day or two to expand to its normal size.

There’s a bit of off-gassing, but it fades away within a few days.

Foundation & Frame

Puffy NEW Mattress - Foundation

What type of bed frame/support does Puffy Lux require?

You can place the Puffy Lux mattress on any sturdy base – including a slatted platform, solid foundation or box spring.

If you use a box spring, I recommend buying one that is designed specifically for memory foam mattresses. It will provide better support to the mattress and ensure it lasts long.

Does Puffy Lux Work on an Adjustable Bed?

Yes, it does.

Care & Cleaning

Is a mattress protector needed for Puffy Lux Mattress?

While Puffy doesn’t say that a mattress protector is required for you to be eligible for the trial period or warranty, it’s a good idea to use a mattress protector with any mattress as it keeps away stains as well as bacteria, allergens and mold.

When you buy a mattress protector, look for a breathable one that doesn’t interfere with the function of the Cooling Cloud foam – otherwise, you'll end up with a hot-sleeping surface.

Do you Need to Rotate the Puffy Lux Mattress?

It usually is not necessary. But if you have a significant weight difference with your partner, rotate the mattress every 3-6 months to avoid uneven wearing which could reduce mattress support and longevity.

Construction

Puffy Lux Mattress Construction NEW

The Puffy Lux is a luxurious 12” thick memory foam mattress.

It is a 4-layer all-foam mattress made of foams custom-designed for comfort, support and cooling.

Here is a more detailed walk-through of the four layers:

Top Comfort Layer:  3″ of Gel-infused Memory Foam

To counter the heat-retention issue associated with memory foam, Puffy designed their soft top layer with a breathable memory foam infused with cooling gel. They call this layer their Cooling Cloud.

The foam itself is pliable and conforms around your body like you expect memory foam will.

The cooling gel draws heat away from the mattress, ensuring you sleep cool. This foam is also breathable, which helps free moisture and warm air from your mattress. It’s not as effective as sleeping on latex or innerspring mattress, but it definitely cools better than memory foam mattresses without cooling gel.

Second Layer:  1.5″ of Plush Dual Cloud Memory Foam

A slightly denser but still very pliable and conforming memory foam is used in the second layer to provide a lot more contouring and a little more lumbar and compression support.

Third Layer:  1.5″ of ClimateComfort Support Foam

The middle 1.5 ClimateComfort foam layer is firmer and designed to support your body's alignment. The unique foam used in this layer will not change its shape or form as your room temperature changes. This keeps your spine correctly aligned and prevents you from bottoming out.

Foundation Layer: 6″ Poly Foam Base

Puffy Mattress

A high-density poly foam base provides anti-sag support and keeps the mattress in good form for years.

Mattress Cover

The cover is 100% polyester.

It’s soft and breathable, which helps keep the surface of the mattress feeling cool.

Note that the cover is not removable. So you cannot wash it to remove stains. That’s why it’s a good idea to get a mattress protector.

Puffy Mattress Complaints

Smell/Off-gassing

Similar to most other synthetic foam mattresses, the Puffy Lux has a bit of off-gassing when you unbox it. It’s not that bad, and you may not even feel it if you are not very sensitive to smells.

The smell dissipates quickly and goes away completely within a week.

Hot/Cold Issues

The mattress does a fairly good job of dissipating heat. But in the end, it’s still memory foam. The gel helps a lot, but you won’t get the same level of cooling as latex or innerspring mattress.

We did not experience any overheating, and we tested it in August and September – in the Deep South.

Sleeping Experience

Puffy Mattress

If you love the feel of memory foam mattresses, you are going to love the Puffy Lux.

It’s soft and quickly conforms to your body, creating a comfortable hug around your joints and curves.

If you prefer sleeping ‘in’ the mattress, the Puffy Lux is a great choice. If you are more of an ‘on the mattress’ sleeper, I recommend getting a latex or hybrid mattress.

Support is good enough for back sleepers. But stomach sleepers who normally find firmer mattresses to be more supportive may not find the Puffy Lux to be a good match for them.

Pressure relief is excellent, especially for side sleepers. The memory foams contours easily around your pressure points.

One area where the mattress could have done better is edge support.

Memory mattresses are not exactly known for their robust edge support, but for the price, they could have added a dedicated edge support system.

Firmness

Puffy Mattress

The Puffy Lux mattress is available in just one firmness option – medium firm.

This is unfortunate since most mattresses at this price point give customers 2-4 firmness options. But medium firm works great for most people.

The Puffy Lux falls on the softer side of the medium-firm range; around 5/10 where ten is very firm.

This makes it quite comfortable for side, back and combination sleepers.

Stomach sleepers, back-only sleepers and heavier folks may want to look for firmer alternatives that provide better support.

↑ Table of Contents

Sinkage

Because Puffy Lux is made from softer foams, sinkage is more pronounced than you’d expect from a medium-firm mattress.

This results in a more conventional mattress.

But the sinkage is not so much that it compromises support. The denser memory foam core and poly foam base keep you from bottoming out.

Motion Transfer

This being memory foam, motion transfer is zero.

If your partner can’t stay still at night, this mattress will help you sleep better.
