There is a “smart” everything, nowadays.

So it’s no surprise that we finally have a smart mattress.

The Smart Bed by Eight Sleep is fairly ordinary underneath the cover – 4 layers of foam work together to provide pressure relief, contouring, and support.

The cover, however, is a totally different story. It is decked out with advanced sensors that provide you with an unusually informative and high tech sleeping experience.

The best feature of this smart mattress is the warming function, which you can use to raise the temperature on either side of the bed.  I'm sure a lot of couples will appreciate this one.

Sensors in the cover can also track your heartbeat, movements, respiratory rate, REM sleep and sleep time. Through its companion app, the Smart Bed tells you how well you are sleeping and helps you improve your sleep quality.

You can even connect your mattress to Alexa directly or to Google Home and other services and devices through IFTTT.

So if you’ve been waiting for a smart bed for you & your partner – this is your chance.

To be honest: the Smart Bed was lot less expensive than I expected.

About Eight Sleep

Eight Sleep Jupiter+

Eight Sleep launched in 2014 with the goal of integrating technology into everyday sleep products.

The company actually started in 2014 as an Indiegogo campaign to market and sell their sleep tracker, the only product they offered at that time.

The reason they created their sleep tracker technology is because their CEO/founder was having issues with his restless leg syndrome and he wanted to know why he was having trouble sleeping. After looking at the data he realized that he slept poorly if he exercised too close to bedtime.

In 2015, EightSleep launched their first smart mattress online, then launched the Smart Bed in December 2016 based on tons of research.

Using a data-driven approach, they have now studied over 200 billion data points and tracked over 10 million hours of sleep to make the most comfortable mattresses and best sleep-tracking tech.

Today, the company sells two products today

  • Smart Bed  (Queen = $2,495): 10″ thick, heats only, Smart Cover
  • The Pod      (Queen = $2,495):  11″ thick, dual-zone climate control, heats and cools, Smart Cover

Note: this review focuses on the Smart Bed.  See my separate review of The Pod here.

Foundation and Frame

Eight Sleep Jupiter+

What type of bed frame/support does Smart Bed require?

Any foundation will do as long as it is sturdy. You can use a box spring, solid foundation, slatted frame or platform.

EightSleep also sells their own foundation made specifically for this mattress.

Does the Smart Bed work on an adjustable bed?

Yes, it does – except for split-configuration adjustable beds.

Care and Cleaning

Is a mattress protector needed for Smart Bed?

It’s not necessary, but it’s highly recommended. It will protect the cover from staining and the sensors in the cover from damage as a result of spills.

If you need to clean the cover either spot clean it or unzip the top layer of the cover and hand or machine wash it.

Do you need to rotate the Smart Bed mattress?

No, not necessary.

↑ Table of Contents

Aesthetics and Styling

Eight Sleep Jupiter+

The style of the Eight Sleep Smart Bed mattress cover is kinda subdued, due to the smart cover.

The mattress itself is white with a bright green trim. The Smart Cover is white at the top and grey on the sides. The smart cover goes on top of all of the beds (it fits on any mattress like a sheet would), it the mattress will look gray most of the time.

At only ten inches in height, the mattress doesn’t have a very imposing or luxurious look. It looks like any other ordinary mattress.

Unless someone sees the cable running to the socket or the connected hub, they wouldn’t guess how much technology is in the mattress.

Construction

Eight Sleep Jupiter+

Given all the tech in this mattress maybe you are expecting a complicated structure with all sorts of special materials and gizmos hiding inside. But it has a very simple all-foam 4-layer structure. All the tech smarts are on the cover.

Here are the four foam layers.

Comfort Layer: 2” reactive foam

This is a type of foam designed to have the responsiveness of latex and the pressure relief of memory foam. It hugs your body without feeling ‘swampy.’

Support Layer:  2” of memory foam

This layer enhances contouring and pressure relief. It molds the mattress to your body, ensuring you don’t experience any pressure points especially on your lower back, hips, and shoulders. It also ensures your spine is properly aligned.

Transition Layer: 2” of transition foam

A transition pad provides compression support and distributes your weight evenly across the mattress. It counters the sinkage from the softer foam layers above.

Foundation: 2” of high-density foam base

A firmer layer of foam provides overall support to the mattress. It also enhances compression support especially for couples and heavier sleepers.

In addition to the mattress itself, EightSleep also sells a Smart Cover and Sleep Tracker which work together to provide their smart mattress with its intelligent tracking features.

Smart Cover

EightSleep Jupiter+ Mattress Review - SmartCover

EightSleep Jupiter+ Mattress Review - SmartCover REM Sleep Monitoring
EightSleep SmartCover: REM Sleep Monitoring

EightSleep's mattress Smart Cover consists of two sections.

There’s a technology layer, where all the sensors and gadgetry are embedded, and there’s a top layer which is the washable part.

The technology layer contains sensors that track your heart rate, respiratory rate, and movements during sleep. It even tracked REM sleep cycles. This layer also warms the mattress when you increase the temperature.

You control the functions of the Smart Cover and view your sleep data through the companion app, which is available for Android and iOS.

The Smart Cover is compatible with Amazon Echo smart speakers (directly) and other smart home devices like Google Home via IFTTT.

Sleep Tracker

EightSleep's Sleep Tracker unit generates data and provides applications for you that help you make sense of your sleep patterns and improve the quality of your sleep, over time.

There's too much to unpack for this review, but some of the most important features the Sleep Tracker give you include:

  • Dual-zone sleep tracking: each side of the bed gets their own independent sleep score with daily, weekly, and monthly breakdowns.
  • Dual-zone temperature control.  Each side of the bed can have its own level of warmth, too.
  • A Smart Alarm that wakes you during the lightest sleep cycle within the latest half-hour range. So, for example, if you need to wake up by 7:00am for work, it may wake you at 6:42am. But if you are still in deep/REM sleep by 7:00am, then the alarm will still go off to ensure you get up on time.
  • Direct integration with Alexa: Ask how you’ve slept, ask Alexa to warm the bed, etc.
  • IFTTT smart home integrations with Google Home and other smart home devices. You can use this to, for example, turn on your Philips Hue Lights, start your Mr. Coffee Maker and adjust your Nest Thermostat when you wake up.
  • Meditation and Ambient Sounds

Sleep Metrics

The Sleep Tracker monitors a LOT of information about your sleep, using chest and other wired sensors inside the Smart Cover, including:

  • Hours Asleep
  • Heart Rate
  • Breathing Rate
  • Tosses & Turns
  • Light Sleep vs. Deep Sleep (percentage)
  • REM Sleep
  • Bed Temperature
  • Room Temperature
  • Breaks (i.e. leaving bed to go to the bathroom)
  • Separate sessions (i.e. if you take a nap lateron in the day)

So, if you have sleep apnea or just want to improve the quality of your sleep through science, then adding EightSleep's Smart Cover + Sleep Tracker makes a lot of sense.

By the way: if you end up buying another mattress, you can always purchase the Smart Cover w/ Sleep Tracker separately.

Smell/Off-Gassing

The Smart Bed mattress emits a slight smell when unpacked and needs a few hours to fully off the gas.

But the smell is not that strong – you may not even notice it. I

If it’s too much for you, then leave the mattress uncovered in a well-ventilated room for around 12 hours.

Sleeping Experience

Eight Sleep Jupiter+

So… what is it like sleeping on a smart mattress?

Well, it feels pretty much like any other mid-budget foam mattress.

The Smart Bed has a typical memory foam cradling feel – much like Casper offers.

Support is great, although edge support could be better. This is a common problem with all memory foam mattresses, however.

Pressure relief is excellent, too – about typical for a memory foam bed. This is good news for those who have been experiencing punishing back pain from their old mattress.

Temperature control is also good, even without the smart cover. The mattress dissipates excess heat away from the mattress, but the memory foam retains just enough warmth for a comfortable snooze. If you want a warmer mattress, then the smart cover is a must.

The sleep tracking feature provides a lot of functionality, although some verified customers have complained that it doesn't always work, or it’s not the most accurate or it is hard to make sense of all the data.  That said, it appears that many of these complaints have been resolved in EightSleep's most recent release, if their more recent reviews are an indication.

↑ Table of Contents

Firmness

There is only one firmness option for the Smart Bed mattress: medium firm.

The medium-firm feels soft enough on top, but without getting too ‘swampy.’

There is just the right amount of firmness to support your weight without creating any uncomfortable pressure points.   Although at only 10″ thick, heavier sleepers might want to look elsewhere.

↑ Table of Contents

Sinkage

Sinkage is average. It sinks enough to provide pressure relief but not too much that it compromises support.

Of course, the actual sinkage is going to vary among different sleepers.

A 200 lb person will feel more sinkage and experience a softer mattress. A lighter person will sink less and may experience a slightly firmer mattress.

↑ Table of Contents

Motion Transfer

Eight Sleep Jupiter+

Foam has very little motion transfer compared to springs or coils. Being all-foam, the Smart Bed mattress has minimal motion transfer. Your fidgety partner can turn all their want at night without waking you up.

↑ Table of Contents

Hot/Cold Issues

The mattress itself has excellent cooling performance. It doesn’t trap much heat or odors.

If you want a warmer bed, the smart cover will cover that (no pun intended). Raise the temperature on your side or both sides of the bed using the app or by talking to Alexa or Google Assistant.

↑ Table of Contents

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Cool smart features to help you sleep better.
  • Split-heating function solves a common couple's problem.
  • Good support and pressure relief.
  • Free shipping.

Cons

  • Only one firmness choice.
  • Plus size users may not get the support they need.

The Smart Bed Mattress is Perfect For You If…

Eight Sleep Jupiter+

  • You want to monitor your sleeping habits and those of your partner.
  • You prefer sleeping warm, but your partner doesn’t.  Or vice-versa.
  • You live in a colder climate.  This mattress will warm you, but you can't cool it down.

↑ Table of Contents

Conclusion

If you think tracking your sleep via a smart mattress makes sense, then buy an EightSleep – they make the best smart mattress you can buy online.

It’s not all high-tech gimmicks, either. This mattress really does offer useful sleep monitoring features, and the mattress itself is very comfortable.  And, based on recent reviews we've seen elsewhere, the company is clearly committed to listening to their customers and improving their products.

The price is surprisingly reasonable, too.
