What is a 2-Sided Flippable Mattress?

Alexander Signature Series® Flippable

It is a mattress with comfortable foam padding on both sides, meaning you can sleep on either side of the mattress.

One-sided mattresses are soft and comfortable only on the top side. The bottom is where the extra-firm high-density base layer is.

Unless you like sleeping on rocks, you cannot comfortably sleep on the other side of the mattress.

This one-sided design, despite being more common today, is a fairly recent introduction.

Most of us grew up with 2-sided mattresses that you could flip at any time.

The double-sided design began with premium mattresses that were layered to provide a more luxurious sleeping experience.

When online mattresses burst onto the scene about a decade ago, almost all of them came with single-sided designs.

Fortunately, there are still a few high-quality flippable mattress brands today. We are going to review five of the best ones.

1. Best Overall: Layla

best cooling mattress pad

The Layla mattress is our favorite of the bunch for three main reasons:

  1. Each side has a different feel – soft and firm comfort options in one mattress.
  2. Bargain prices that make this mattress great value for your money. Finding a cheaper adjustable-comfort 2-sided mattress is hard.
  3. Lifetime warranty.

If you are looking for an affordable flippable mattress whose firmness you can adjust to your liking, Layla is a great choice.

Shipping is free to the continental US. Alaska, Hawaii, and Canada customers pay $125 for freight.

Construction

Layla is a memory foam mattress with two usable sides and two comfort options.

One side provides a medium-soft feel that is ideal for most sleepers. It has quick pressure relief, excellent contouring, and deep compression support.

The other side provides a firm feel that’s great for heavier sleepers, some back sleepers, and stomach sleepers. It has good pressure relief and added support.

The Layla mattress has four layers. Here’s how they are arranged when the med-soft side is on top.

  • 3” copper-infused gel memory foam which provides quick pressure relief and deep compression support. The copper helps with cooling (it’s a good conductor of heat) and has anti-microbial properties.
  • 2” convoluted support foam. The foam has a specialized design that increases airflow to keep the mattress cool. It also provides support and weight distribution when the mattress is in a med-soft configuration.
  • 4” base support foam. The firm foam layer provides deep compression support. It’s also the main support layer when the mattress is in a ‘firm’ configuration.
  • 1” copper-gel memory foam. Even ‘firm’ sleepers need pressure relief, and that’s what this layer of memory foam is for. It provides just the right amount of contouring without making the firm side too plush. As in the top layer, the copper helps with cooling and anti-microbial protection.

You may have noticed that the Layla mattress focuses a lot on cooling with the copper-infused gel foam on both sides plus the convoluted foam layer.

This is because it’s a memory foam mattress. Memory foam mattresses tend to get uncomfortably warm because the foam retains a lot of heat.

The convoluted foam, copper, and gel dissipate heat away from the mattress, ensuring you sleep cool.

Cooling efforts don’t end there. The breathable cover actively dissipates excess heat and wicks away perspiration.

Sleeping Experience

The sleeping experience will vary depending on the side you sleep on.

Most people start with the medium-soft side and get a feel of it over a couple of weeks. If the mattress still doesn’t feel comfortable, just flip it and try the firmer side.

But if you generally prefer a firm mattress, you are a stomach sleeper, or you are overweight, then I recommend trying out the firm side first.

Give it a couple of weeks, then flip over the mattress if it still feels a bit too firm.

The cooling techniques incorporated in the mattress do work actually – the mattress sleeps very cool despite having memory foam.

Similar to other memory foam mattresses, motion control is almost nonexistent.

The only area where the mattress falls short is edge support, especially on the med-soft side. But that’s usually the case with memory foam mattresses.

Trial Period And Warranty

Layla flippable mattress review - delivery in box

You have 120 days to test the bed in your home. That’s more than enough time to try both sides of the mattress without any pressure.

If you keep the mattress, you’ll enjoy a lifetime warranty: no catches or hidden conditions.

The warranty covers impressions deeper than 1” and seams coming apart.

But you have to use the mattress on the right foundation and make sure moisture, stains, or mold don’t damage it.

I highly recommend using a mattress protector on this one.

2. Best Hybrid Flippable Mattress: Nest Bedding Robin Flippable Hybrid Mattress

flippable innerspring mattress

Hybrid mattresses offer great support, a responsive feel, and excellent cooling performance.

Our favorite flippable hybrid mattress is Robin by Nest Bedding. The dual firmness flippable mattress offers both a medium and firm feel.

Construction

The Robin mattress has a hybrid construction, meaning it combines coils and foam. Here’s the breakdown of all the layers from the medium side to the firm side.

  • The 1” cover is quilted with plush polyfoam to provide instant pressure relief when you lay on the mattress. It's also infused with phase change material to provide an always-cool feel, no matter the season.
  • A 1” layer of gel memory foam provides the softer feel of the medium side and ensures adequate pressure point relief for side and back sleepers.
  • A 6” core of pocket coils provide support for both sides of the mattress.
  • A 1” high-density foam layer provides support on the firm side of the mattress.
  • The same quilted foam cover on the medium side extends to the firm side.

Sleeping Experience

Unlike most hybrid mattresses, the Robin mattress has thin comfort layers – just 2” of comfort foam on each side.

It doesn't feel quite as luxurious as one-sided hybrid mattresses with 4” or more of foam on top of the pocket coil base.

But it’s still pretty comfortable. The medium side is soft without being too plush. It relieves pressure points for side and back sleepers while letting you get support from the pocket coil core.

The firm side is ideal for stomach sleepers and heavier side sleepers. It still has some pressure relief from the quilted cover, so it doesn't feel like sleeping on a rock.

As for cooling performance, the Robin mattress does an excellent job. The pocket coil core allows airflow and dissipates excess body heat away from you.

Other aspects of Robin’s sleeping experience that you’ll love include the solid edge support and its responsive feel that is especially helpful during sex.

Trial Period And Warranty

The Nest Bedding Robin mattress has a 365-night trial period and a lifetime warranty.

3. Best Budget Flippable Mattress: Spring Dreams 9″ Two-Sided Pocket Coil Mattress

flippable hybrid mattress

Shopping on a budget? The Spring Dreams two-sided pocket coil mattress is one of the cheapest flippable mattresses in the market.

It is similar to old timey innerspring mattresses. It consists mostly of springs with thin cushioning on either side.

Construction

The biggest chunk of the Spring Dreams mattress is the 7” coil core.

Unlike most old-fashioned spring mattresses that used Bonnell springs, the Spring Dreams mattress uses pocket coils.

Pocket coils have many advantages.

  • They are quiet even after years of use.
  • They provide superior body contouring.
  • They reduce motion transfer.
  • They last longer without sagging.

On either side of the picket coils is a 1” cover quilted with soft foam. It cushions you from the coils and provides pressure relief.

Sleeping Experience

Both sides of the Spring Dreams mattress have the same firm feel. Get this mattress only if you want a 2-sided mattress you can flip to extend its lifespan.

If you want a mattress you can flip to adjust firmness, this is not it.

The firm feel of the Spring Dreams mattress makes it mostly ideal for back and stomach sleepers.

Despite having just 1” of cushioning, the coils don’t press into your body.

That’s because the pocket coils contour around your body, making the Spring Dreams mattress much more comfortable than traditional innerspring mattresses.

The Spring Dreams mattress has a nice bouncy feel (obviously, being a spring mattress) and sleeps cool all year round.

Trial Period And Warranty

The Spring Dreams mattress is available on Amazon, so Amazon return policies apply.

As for the warranty, it runs for 10 years.

4. Best Flippable Kids Mattress: Nolah Nurture 10” Flippable Mattress

king size flippable mattress

If you are shopping for a 2-sided mattress for your kid or teen, we recommend the Nolah Nurture 10” flippable mattress.

It is a latex hybrid mattress with a plush and firm side. You can get the mattress in a twin, twin XL or full size.

Construction

Nolah Nurture has a hybrid construction consisting of natural Talalay latex and pocket coils.

At the center of the Nolah Nurture mattress is the 6” pocket coil core that provides support, contouring, and cooling for both sides of the mattress.

The pocket coil layer has three zones that provide targeted support and pressure relief and ensure better spinal alignment.

The coil core is sandwiched between two Talalay latex layers. One side is a 2” soft layer of natural latex that provides a plush sleeping experience.

On the other side is a 2” layer of firm natural latex that provides a firmer sleeping experience.

All these layers are wrapped in an organic cotton cover. An additional thin layer or organic wool is placed right under the cover for moisture-wicking and temperature regulation.

Sleeping Experience

Most kids are comfortable on a firm mattress. So the firm side is probably the best one for your child.

But let them experience both sides and tell you which one they like best. They may also want to flip to the other side as they grow up and their comfort preferences change.

One of the best things about latex is that it doesn't get hot at all.

Combined with the temperature-regulating wool and the breathable cotton cover, you don't have to worry about your kid sleeping hot or getting sweaty at night, even during summer.

If your child is easily bothered by heat when they are asleep, we highly recommend the Nolah Nurture mattress.

Trial Period And Warranty

The Nolah Nurture kids mattress comes with a 120-night in-home trial period and a lifetime warranty.

5. Best Latex Mattress: Zenhaven

Zenhaven mattress

Luxury latex mattresses are not cheap. Go to a store, and you are likely to pay over $3,000 for one.

The Zenhaven mattress is as luxurious as the best latex mattresses but way cheaper. And as a bonus, it has a 2-in-1 design.

Just by flipping the mattress, you can go from Luxury Plush (med firm) to Gentle Firm (firm).

Zenhaven is made by Saatva, so you can be sure it’s a quality mattress that will last for years. To guarantee that, it comes with a lengthy 20-year non-prorated warranty.

Shipping costs $99 for most locations and includes complimentary setup and old mattress removal.

Construction

two sided mattress

Zenhanven is an eco-friendly mattress consisting of Talalay latex foam, an organic cotton cover, and an organic wool layer for fire protection.

The quilted organic cotton cover creates a soft and ultra-cool sleeping surface. It also does an excellent job wicking away perspiration at night.

Just beneath the cover is a layer of New Zealand wool. It’s 100% organic.

The wool enhances the mattress’s breathability and moisture-wicking. Most importantly, it acts as a natural fire retardant. No chemical retardants are used in the mattress.

There are three layers of latex foam, all made from Talalay latex.

Saatva says they opted for Talalay latex, instead of Dunlop, because of its springier and more buoyant feel.

It’s also cooler than Dunlop latex, has a consistent feel throughout, and conforms better to your body for enhanced pressure relief.

One of the Talalay latex layers is 1.5” thick and has a softer feel. It is the top layer when the mattress is in a Luxury Plush configuration.

It has a special 5-zone design with varying firmness in each zone. It’s firmer where you need extra support and softer when you need more pressure relief.

A similar, but firmer, 1.5” zoned Talalay latex layer is also on the other side of the mattress. This ensures you are comfortable no matter which side of the mattress you sleep on.

Between the two latex layers is a 6” core that provides support to both sides of the mattress.

Note: The Zenhaven mattress is heavy. Have someone help you flip it. If that’s not possible, contact the company, and they will send a team over to flip the mattress for you at no cost.

Sleeping Experience

best rated two sided mattress

Most people prefer the Luxury Plush side of the mattress. It has a medium-soft feel that is great for the side, back and combination sleepers.

The comfort zones make a big difference. The mattress hugs your body in all the right places.

The Gentle Firm side is excellent for stomach sleepers and overweight individuals. It provides deep compression support and proper spinal alignment.

This being a latex foam mattress, cooling is excellent. The organic cotton cover and wool also help a great deal, especially if you have frequent night sweats.

The mattress has a nice springy feel, making it a great choice for couples.

The springiness does produce a bit of motion transfer but not enough to shake you awake when your partner moves.

Unlike a memory foam mattress, Zenhaven has good edge support – another big plus for couples.

Trial Period And Warranty

The Zenhaven mattress comes with a 365-night in-home trial period.

That’s plenty of time to find the best firmness option for you. If you don’t like either firmness levels, the company will pick up the mattress and give you a full refund minus the $99 delivery fee.

If you keep the mattress, the warranty lasts a lifetime.

For the first two years, you'll get a new mattress at no cost in case of a defect. After that, you'll only have to pay $149 processing fee to have the defective mattress repaired or replaced.

There is also an optional 15-year prorated option that Saatva calls the Fairness Replacement Option.

This option allows you to claim a new mattress for a certain percentage of the original price (between 40% and 80% depending on how long you’ve had the mattress). You get to keep your old mattress.

6. Best 2-Sided Adjustable Mattress: Luxi

Split mattress

Luxi is a memory and latex foam mattress that provides a comfortable, balanced feel – not too much bounciness, just enough contouring, and excellent support.

To make the mattress comfortable for everyone, the Luxi mattress (in depth review) can be adjusted to one of three firmness options: soft, medium-firm, and firm.

Shipping is free to all US states and Canada.

Construction

flippable mattress

The Luxi mattress has four foam layers.

When the mattress arrives, these layers will be arranged in a medium-firm configuration.

The first two layers are memory foam and latex foam.

Combined, they provided quick pressure relief, body contouring, deep compression support, and bounce back.

The third layer has a unique design consisting of memory foam pillars on a foam base. Luxi calls it Shape Matching Technology.

Here’s how it works.

When you lie on the mattress, each pillar reacts to the amount of pressure on it. Pillars can either collapse to provide pressure relief or remain upright to boost support.

This provides customized comfort and support based on your weight and sleeping position.

It's like springs, but made from foam.

Finally, there’s a base layer consisting of high-density polyfoam.

Adjusting mattress comfort is very simple.

Just unzip the soft quilted cover to access the interchangeable layers below.

If you want to make the mattress softer, flip the top section of the mattress to bring the SBT layer on top.

To make it firmer, bring the base layer on top or just flip the whole mattress.

Sleeping Experience

Luxi flippable mattress
Luxi Shape Matching Technology

I recommend trying out different configurations until you find the most comfortable one.

Most people find the default medium-firm set up to be comfortable enough. If you don’t like it, try the softer or firmer configurations.

Overall, the mattress sleeps very comfortably as long as you adjust it appropriately to fit your comfort needs.

The combination of memory foam and latex foam ensures you have the best of both types of foam. The memory foam gives the pressure relief, and latex foam provides the support.

The latex foam layer also helps keep the mattress cool by dissipating excess heat away by the mattress. The airflow-enhancing SBT layer complements it.

Motion control is minimal, which is great for fidgety couples.

Edge support is a bit lacking, but that’s normal for a memory foam mattress.

Trial Period And Warranty

The trial period is 100 nights.

Take your time to find the best configuration that works for you.  There’s no rush.

The warranty is ten years and non-prorated.

7. Best Flippable Foam Mattress: Amore Beds Copper Foam Flippable Mattress

Amore mattress aesthetics and styling

This is one of the four flippable 2-sided mattresses Amore Beds sells. It’s their cheapest option.

The Amore copper foam mattress is available in three thickness options: 8”, 10” and 12”.

All the sizes have the same medium to medium-firm feel on both sides. So the main advantage of buying the Amore copper foam flippable mattress is longevity.

If you want a mattress that switches from softer to firm when you flip it, check out one of their other options.

Construction

Amore mattress aesthetics and styling

The 8, 10 and 12 inch Amore copper foam mattresses all have the same construction – the same exact layers in the same order.

The only difference is the thickness of individual layers.

The first layer is copper-infused memory foam. The copper is there to help with cooling. It also creates a more hygienic sleeping environment since it is antimicrobial. This antimicrobial property also keeps the mattress smelling fresh.

Next is a layer of transition foam that offers a mix of support and contouring. The foam used in this layer is open-cell to improve ventilation and cooling.

Then there’s the mattress core, which is 4” thick across all three mattress sizes. It’s made with high-resilience foam that offers years of support no matter which side of the mattress you sleep on.

The foam layers repeat themselves on the bottom half of the mattress – transition layer then a copper-infused layer on top.

The mattress is wrapped in a quilted organic cotton cover. For an additional cost, you can order a copper ion infused cover.

To even out wearing on both sides of the mattress, the manufacturer recommends flipping it every 3-6 months.

Sleeping Experience

The Amore copper foam mattress offers the same feel on both sides. The 8 and 10 inch mattresses have a slightly firmer feel, while the 12 inch mattress feels a bit softer.

We recommend the 8 and 10 inch mattresses for back and stomach sleepers, while the thicker 12 inch option is great for side sleepers.

The Amore copper foam mattress sleeps fairly cool thanks to the copper infused into the foam, the open-cell foam design, and the organic cotton cover.

But some heat-sensitive sleepers may still find it too warm. If you want a flippable mattress with powerful cooling, get the Zenhaven latex mattress. Amore Beds also sells flippable hybrid and latex mattresses that sleep much cooler.

Trial Period & Warranty

Amore Beds offers free shipping, a 100-night trial period with free returns and a 10-year warranty.

8. Best for Heavier Sleepers and Stomach Sleepers: Plank by Brooklyn Bedding

double sided king mattress

If you weigh more than average, you’ll need a flippable mattress that provides adequate support on both sides.

Plank by Brooklyn Bedding exactly does that. It is designed specifically to offer a firmer sleeping experience than most mattresses.

One side is extra-firm while the other is firm.

The added firmness ensures you do not bottom out, no matter your weight.

Plank is not just ideal for bigger, bodied individuals. It’s also a great choice for most stomach sleepers. It offers good spinal alignment, ensuring you don’t wake up with aches and pains.

Construction

The Plank mattress consists of two layers plus a quilted cover on both sides of the mattress.

The extra-firm side starts with a 0.75” quilted gel memory foam. The quilted layer contours around your pressure point to relieve pressure. But it’s thin enough that the mattress retains its extra-firm feel.

Below that is a 7” high-density core layer that provides support to both sides of the mattress.

Next is a 2” layer of firm TitanFlex foam that provides even weight distribution and deep compression support. This makes the firm side of the mattress slightly softer.

There’s one more layer below the TitanFlex foam: a 1.5” quilted gel memory foam layer. This forms the comfort layer of the firm side when you flip the mattress.

The extra 0.75 inches of memory foam provides a deeper hug for added pressure relief.

If you are a hot sleeper, you can add a cooling cover to your order and it will be sewn onto the mattress. The GlacioTex cooling cover contains phase change materials (PCMs) that provide a cool-to-the-touch feel.

Update: Now there is a hybrid version of the Plank mattress. The Plank Firm Luxe mattress has a core of pocket coils instead of foam. It's more supportive, sleeps cooler, and feels bouncier. It retains the same firm and extra-firm comfort options.

Sleeping Experience

Both sides of the Plank mattress are pretty firm.

The firm side is rated at about 7.5-8.5/10. The extra-firm side is rated at about 9-10/10 (yes, it’s that firm).

There’s very little sinkage. The quilted padding on both sides is too thin to create anything close to a plush sleeping experience.

But this is a good thing for overweight sleepers. Because the mattress can take on your weight without sinking, your spine stays properly aligned.

The best Side of the mattress depends on your weight. Most heavier sleepers and stomach sleepers will prefer the firm side.

Heavier couples and obese persons may find the extra-firm side to be more supportive.

The Plank mattress sleeps fairly cool. Because it doesn't wrap around your body, there’s no chance for the foam to trap heat.

But if you are a hot sleeper, you’ll appreciate the extra cooling panel available with the mattress (at extra cost).

One advantage of sleeping on a firm foam mattress like Plank is its surprising level of responsiveness.

It’s not quite as bouncy as a pocket coil mattress, but it doesn’t have the ‘stuck in the mattress’ feel of most medium-firm or soft foam mattresses. This makes Plank a good mattress for sex and for sleepers who toss and turn a lot during sleep.

Trial Period and Warranty

Plank by Brooklyn Bedding features

The Plank mattress comes with a 120-night in-home trial period. There’s a mandatory trial period of 30 nights before you can make a return.

The warranty is ten years long and covers permanent body impressions greater than 1” and any other manufacturing defects.

9. Best Luxury Flippable Mattress: Amore 2-Sided Pillow-top Natural Mattress

Best Flippable 2-Sided Mattresses

Looking for a flippable mattress that offers a 5-star hotel sleeping experience. We recommend the Amore 2-sided natural mattress.

Specifically, pick the pillow-top version. It is 15” thick and comes with a plush European pillow-top on each side of the mattress.

That, plus the responsiveness of the coils and naturally cool feel of latex, makes for a darn good night’s sleep.

If you prefer a firmer more supportive feel, choose the standard version without the pillow-top.

Construction

The Amore natural mattress has a hybrid construction, which is why it’s cheaper than most all-latex mattresses.

An 8” core of pocket coils provides responsiveness and support on both sides of the mattress. It makes the Amore natural mattress especially ideal for heavier sleepers and couples since the coils can hold up more weight without sinking.

The core is sandwiched between latex layers on each side.

The 13” standard mattress has 2” of GOLS natural Dunlop latex on each side of the core. An organic cotton cover that’s quilted with 1” of organic wool wraps around the mattress.

The 15” luxury pillow top Amore natural mattress has the same 2” Dunlop latex comfort layers on both sides. In addition, each side has a pillow-top consisting of 1” soft Dunlop latex.

So in total, you have 3” of latex on both sides. The thicker comfort layers are why the pillow-top Amore mattress feels so luxurious. The mattress hugs your body such that it feels like you are floating on a cloud.

The pillow-top mattress also comes with the organic cotton and wool cover.

Sleeping Experience

The Amore natural pillow-top mattress feels really comfortable. It has a medium feel that’s most comfortable for side and back sleepers. It’s also great for those who weigh less than average.

The standard Amore natural mattress has a medium-firm feel. It’s great for heavier sleepers who need the extra support as well as stomach sleepers who are most comfortable on a firm sleeping surface.

As for cooling, both Amore natural mattresses are excellent picks for hot sleepers. The combination of cotton, wool, latex and coils ensures you sleep comfortably all year round.

Trial Period & Warranty

The Amore natural 2-sided mattress comes with a 100-night trial period and a 25-year prorated warranty.

10. Easiest to Flip: Brooklyn Bedding EcoSleep Luxe

Best Flippable 2-Sided Mattresses

The Brooklyn Bedding EcoSleep Luxe is another good choice if you are shopping for a latex hybrid mattress.

It offers the support, comfort and cooling of latex, at a lower price.

The EcoSleep Luxe mattress offers two comfort options: soft and firm. This makes it a great pick for a wide range of sleepers.

Construction

The EcoSleep Luxe mattress is not quite like the other flippable mattresses. You can adjust comfort, but it’s not really 2-sided.

The mattress is designed like a traditional one-sided mattress. It starts with an organic cotton top cover that’s quilted with Joma wool.

Below the cover there are two natural latex layers: a 1.5” firm latex layer and a 1.5” soft latex layer.

An 8” pocket coil base comes next followed by a 0.25” high-density flex base that reinforces the coil layer.

The flipping only occurs in the top latex layers, which are actually joined into a single 2-sided layer.

One side of this 3” layer is soft and the other is firm. To adjust firmness, you open the zipper and flip just the latex layer.

This is actually brilliant because it makes adjusting firmness a lot easier. You don't have to flip the entire mattress, which is really heavy.

Sleeping Experience

If you sleep on your side, try the soft side. It has more give and contours better to your body. This is also the best side for those with body aches.

If you are a stomach or back sleeper, try the firm side of the latex layer. It’s more rigid and offers more support.

The pocket coils in the base provide additional body contouring and support. So even overweight sleepers will find the EcoSleep Luxe mattress to be comfortable.

Hot sleepers will also love the Luxe mattress. The combination of coils and natural latex, not to mention the organic cotton and wool cover, keeps the mattress ever cool.

Trial Period & Warranty

The Brooklyn Bedding EcoSleep Luxe mattress comes with a 120-night trial period and a 10-year warranty.

Flippable Mattress Buying Guide

What Look For in a Two-Sided Flippable Mattresses

1. Type of Mattress

Here are the most common types of flippable mattresses.

  • All-foam mattresses – These are affordable and most offer good support and pressure relief. But they do tend to sleep a bit hot and heavier sleepers may not get the deep support they need.
  • Hybrid mattresses – These mattresses combine pocket coils and foam or latex to create a supportive and pressure-relieving mattress. They are pricier, though.
  • Latex mattresses – These are ideal for those who want a natural/eco-friendly mattress. Natural latex mattresses are pricey but they sleep cool, have good support and pressure relief, and they last a long time.
  • Spring mattresses – Spring or innerspring mattresses consist of a bonnell or pocket coil core sandwiched between two thin layers of foam or cushioning. They are very affordable but not as comfortable as other types of mattresses.

2. Materials & Certifications

Check the type and quality of materials used in the mattress.

If you want deep pressure relief, especially if you have joint pain or you sleep on your side, get a flippable mattress with memory foam.

If you want plenty of support (ideal for heavier folks and couples), get a mattress with latex or coils.

Hot sleepers will sleep most comfortably on a mattress containing coils or latex.

If you want a bouncy and responsive mattress, coils or latex, are again the best materials for the job.

Also check whether the materials carry any quality certifications. For foam, make sure it is CertiPUR-US certified.

For latex, look for GOLS (for organic latex) or OEKO-TEX certification

3. Distinct Firmness Levels

Flippable mattresses with a distinct firmness level on each side are the best for most people. You can adjust firmness simply by flipping the mattress over.

But if all you want is the added longevity of a 2-sided mattress, then go for one that feels the same on either side. That allows you to flip the mattress frequently to extend its lifespan.

4. Cooling

If you are a hot sleeper, be careful which mattress you choose.

Latex, hybrid and innerspring mattresses sleep the coolest.

If you have to get a foam mattress, make sure it comes with a breathable cover and has gel memory foam or some other cooling technology such as phase change materials or copper-infused foam.

5. Trial Period & Warranty

Finally, check the fine print on the mattress.

How long can you test it at home and are returns free? Most online mattress companies offer an in-home trial period of 100 nights or longer.

How long is the warranty? 10 years is the standard for most mattresses.

Benefits & Downsides Of Flippable Mattresses

Nest Alexander Signature Series flippable mattress - hero shot

Benefits

The biggest benefit of flippable mattresses is exactly that…they are flippable.

This has several advantages.

1. Longer Lasting

A 2-sided mattress will last several years longer, sometimes even twice as long as a comparable single-sided mattress.

The explanation for this is simple. When you flip the mattress over, the other side gets a chance to recover and regain its shape.

As a result, your mattress goes for longer without sagging and losing support.

If you are looking for an affordable foam mattress that will last 10-20 years, a flippable 2-sided mattress is a good bet.

A couple of the mattresses in our list – Layla and Nolah – go as far as offering a lifetime warranty while Saatva provides a 20-year warranty on their Zenhaven mattress.

It’s unusual to come across foam mattresses with such long warranties. It says something about their quality and durability.

2. Multiple Comfort Options

Most 2-sided mattresses don’t just offer two comfortable sides to sleep on; they also give sleepers at least two comfort options.

One side of the mattress is soft or medium-firm while the other is firm.

Some flippable mattresses like Luxi provide three comfort levels – soft, medium, and firm.

The ability to adjust the firmness level at home means you don’t have to worry about buying the wrong mattress.

If one side feels too soft or hurts your back, just flip the mattress over.

Most people find that they don’t need to make a return.

One other advantage of having multiple comfort options is that you can adjust firmness in the future when your comfort needs change.

If, for instance, you normally sleep on the softer side but add a little weight or get pregnant, you might find that the firmer side provides better support.

Or perhaps you are used to the firm side, but you get a back or hip injury.

The softer side might be more comfortable because of the extra pressure relief.

Instead of spending money on a new mattress, you just flip it.

3. More Value For Your Money

Don’t assume that 2-sided mattresses will cost you more than the conventional types. 2-sided mattresses cost around the same as comparable single-sided mattresses.

You can get some pretty awesome deals with mattresses like Amore, which starts at just $320.

Dollar for dollar, you get more bang for your buck with a flippable mattress.

You are essentially buying two mattresses for the price of one. The mattress also lasts longer, meaning you can go for more years before you need to buy a new mattress.

4. More Comfortable

I’m not saying that conventional 1-sided mattresses are uncomfortable. We have reviewed many great ones on this site.

But some single-sided mattresses compromise on quality.

They have a thin comfort section that provides the bare minimum support and contouring. They then add a thick slab of cheap, low-quality foam at the bottom.

You’ll be lucky if the mattress lasts more than five years without sagging and hurting your back.

Manufacturers of 2-sided mattresses, on the other hand, cannot afford to pad the mattress height with low-quality materials.

They have to make both sides comfortable to sleep on.

They use better quality materials and construct the mattress in such a way that it provides excellent support and contouring on each side.

No gimmicks to make the mattress seem more luxurious and comfortable than it is.

Minor Downsides

I can only think of two disadvantages of the flippable mattress.

One of them is that you have to flip the mattress, which is tedious if the mattress is heavy.

But with two people, flipping a mattress is easy. If you plan to buy the Zenhaven mattress, Saatva offers to send a team to flip the mattress for you.

If you are on your own, get the Brooklyn Bedding EcoSleep Luxe mattress. It has a design that makes it a lot easier to flip. You only turn the top layer to adjust firmness.

And anyway, it’s not like you are flipping the mattress every day or even every month. Once or twice a year at most.

The other downside is that it’s hard to get a split flippable mattress. In our reviews above, only Luxi offers a split option.

This is a disadvantage for couples with different comfort preferences.

Flippable Two-Sided Mattress: Frequently Asked Questions

double sided mattress

Do flippable mattresses last longer?

Yes, flippable mattresses can last longer than single-sided mattresses, but only if you regularly flip the mattress.

If you only sleep on one side of the mattress, it’ll probably last just as long as a regular mattress.

Can any mattress be flipped?

Most mattresses today are not flippable. Only one side of the mattress is meant to be slept on.

If you want a flippable mattress, make sure it is labeled as a flippable or 2-sided mattress.

Are flippable mattresses expensive?

Flippable mattresses cost about the same as single-sided mattresses made with the same materials.

Do I need a special bed frame for a flippable mattress?

You don't need a special bed frame or foundation for a 2-sided mattress. A regular bed frame will do.

How often should I flip a flippable mattress?

Typically, flipping the mattress every six months is the best way to even out wearing on each side of the mattress.

However, if you have a flippable mattress that’s firm on one side and soft on the other, you shouldn’t flip it unless your comfort preferences have changed.

What you can do is rotate the mattress every six months to even out wearing on each side.

Final Verdict

We love the luxury/cool feel of the Zenhaven latex mattress, the versatility of the Luxi mattress, the rock-bottom price of the Amore flippable mattress, and the lifetime warranty of Nolah Signature.
