What is a 2-Sided Flippable Mattress?
It is a mattress with comfortable foam padding on both sides, meaning you can sleep on either side of the mattress.
One-sided mattresses are soft and comfortable only on the top side. The bottom is where the extra-firm high-density base layer is.
Unless you like sleeping on rocks, you cannot comfortably sleep on the other side of the mattress.
This one-sided design, despite being more common today, is a fairly recent introduction.
Most of us grew up with 2-sided mattresses that you could flip at any time.
The double-sided design began with premium mattresses that were layered to provide a more luxurious sleeping experience.
When online mattresses burst onto the scene about a decade ago, almost all of them came with single-sided designs.
Fortunately, there are still a few high-quality flippable mattress brands today. We are going to review five of the best ones.

Best Overall: Layla
The Layla mattress is our favorite of the bunch for three main reasons:
- Each side has a different feel – soft and firm comfort options in one mattress.
- Bargain prices that make this mattress great value for your money. Finding a cheaper adjustable-comfort 2-sided mattress is hard.
- Lifetime warranty.
If you are looking for an affordable flippable mattress whose firmness you can adjust to your liking, Layla is a great choice.
Shipping is free to the continental US. Alaska, Hawaii, and Canada customers pay $125 for freight.
Layla is a memory foam mattress with two usable sides and two comfort options.
One side provides a medium-soft feel that is ideal for most sleepers. It has quick pressure relief, excellent contouring, and deep compression support.
The other side provides a firm feel that’s great for heavier sleepers, some back sleepers, and stomach sleepers. It has good pressure relief and added support.
The Layla mattress has four layers. Here’s how they are arranged when the med-soft side is on top.
- 3” copper-infused gel memory foam which provides quick pressure relief and deep compression support. The copper helps with cooling (it’s a good conductor of heat) and has anti-microbial properties.
- 2” convoluted support foam. The foam has a specialized design that increases airflow to keep the mattress cool. It also provides support and weight distribution when the mattress is in a med-soft configuration.
- 4” base support foam. The firm foam layer provides deep compression support. It’s also the main support layer when the mattress is in a ‘firm’ configuration.
- 1” copper-gel memory foam. Even ‘firm’ sleepers need pressure relief, and that’s what this layer of memory foam is for. It provides just the right amount of contouring without making the firm side too plush. As in the top layer, the copper helps with cooling and anti-microbial protection.
You may have noticed that the Layla mattress focuses a lot on cooling with the copper-infused gel foam on both sides plus the convoluted foam layer.
This is because it’s a memory foam mattress. Memory foam mattresses tend to get uncomfortably warm because the foam retains a lot of heat.
The convoluted foam, copper, and gel dissipate heat away from the mattress, ensuring you sleep cool.
Cooling efforts don’t end there. The breathable cover actively dissipates excess heat and wicks away perspiration.
The sleeping experience will vary depending on the side you sleep on.
Most people start with the medium-soft side and get a feel of it over a couple of weeks. If the mattress still doesn’t feel comfortable, just flip it and try the firmer side.
But if you generally prefer a firm mattress, you are a stomach sleeper, or you are overweight, then I recommend trying out the firm side first.
Give it a couple of weeks, then flip over the mattress if it still feels a bit too firm.
The cooling techniques incorporated in the mattress do work actually – the mattress sleeps very cool despite having memory foam.
Similar to other memory foam mattresses, motion control is almost nonexistent.
The only area where the mattress falls short is edge support, especially on the med-soft side. But that’s usually the case with memory foam mattresses.
Trial Period And Warranty
You have 120 days to test the bed in your home. That’s more than enough time to try both sides of the mattress without any pressure.
If you keep the mattress, you’ll enjoy a lifetime warranty: no catches or hidden conditions.
The warranty covers impressions deeper than 1” and seams coming apart.
But you have to use the mattress on the right foundation and make sure moisture, stains, or mold don’t damage it.
I highly recommend using a mattress protector on this one.
Best Latex Mattress: Zenhaven
Luxury latex mattresses are not cheap. Go to a store, and you are likely to pay over $3,000 for one.
The Zenhaven mattress is as luxurious as the best latex mattresses but way cheaper. And as a bonus, it has a 2-in-1 design.
Just by flipping the mattress, you can go from Luxury Plush (med firm) to Gentle Firm (firm).
Zenhaven is made by Saatva, so you can be sure it’s a quality mattress that will last for years. To guarantee that, it comes with a lengthy 20-year non-prorated warranty.
Shipping costs $99 for most locations and includes complimentary setup and old mattress removal.
Zenhanven is an eco-friendly mattress consisting of Talalay latex foam, an organic cotton cover, and an organic wool layer for fire protection.
The quilted organic cotton cover creates a soft and ultra-cool sleeping surface. It also does an excellent job wicking away perspiration at night.
Just beneath the cover is a layer of New Zealand wool. It’s 100% organic.
The wool enhances the mattress’s breathability and moisture-wicking. Most importantly, it acts as a natural fire retardant. No chemical retardants are used in the mattress.
There are three layers of latex foam, all made from Talalay latex.
Saatva says they opted for Talalay latex, instead of Dunlop, because of its springier and more buoyant feel.
It’s also cooler than Dunlop latex, has a consistent feel throughout, and conforms better to your body for enhanced pressure relief.
One of the Talalay latex layers is 1.5” thick and has a softer feel. It is the top layer when the mattress is in a Luxury Plush configuration.
It has a special 5-zone design with varying firmness in each zone. It’s firmer where you need extra support and softer when you need more pressure relief.
A similar 1.5” zoned Talalay latex layer is also on the other side of the mattress. This ensures you are comfortable no matter which side of the mattress you sleep on.
The other layer is 6” thick and has a firmer feel. It is the top layer when the mattress is in a Gentle Firm configuration.
Note: The Zenhaven mattress is heavy. Have someone help you flip it. If that’s not possible, contact the company, and they will send a team over to flip the mattress for you at no cost.
Most people prefer the Luxury Plush side of the mattress. It has a medium-soft feel that is great for the side, back and combination sleepers.
The comfort zones make a big difference. The mattress hugs your body in all the right places.
The Gentle Firm side is excellent for stomach sleepers and overweight individuals. It provides deep compression support and proper spinal alignment.
This being a latex foam mattress, cooling is excellent. The organic cotton cover and wool also help a great deal, especially if you have frequent night sweats.
The mattress has a nice springy feel, making it a great choice for couples.
The springiness does produce a bit of motion transfer but not enough to shake you awake when your partner moves.
Unlike a memory foam mattress, Zenhaven has good edge support – another big plus for couples.
Trial Period And Warranty
The Zenhaven mattress comes with a 120-day in-home trial period.
That’s plenty of time to find the best firmness option for you. If you don’t like either firmness levels, the company will pick up the mattress and give you a full refund minus the $99 delivery fee.
If you keep the mattress, the warranty is 20 years long and non-prorated.
There is also an optional prorated option that Saatva calls the Fairness Replacement Option.
This option allows you to claim a new mattress for a certain percentage of the original price (between 30% and 75% depending on how long you’ve had the mattress). You get to keep your old mattress.
Best 2-Sided Adjustable Mattress: Luxi
Luxi is a memory and latex foam mattress that provides a comfortable, balanced feel – not too much bounciness, just enough contouring, and excellent support.
To make the mattress comfortable for everyone, the Luxi mattress (in depth review) can be adjusted to one of three firmness options: soft, medium-firm, and firm.
Shipping is free to all US states and Canada.
The Luxi mattress has four foam layers.
When the mattress arrives, these layers will be arranged in a medium-firm configuration.
The first two layers are memory foam and latex foam.
Combined, they provided quick pressure relief, body contouring, deep compression support, and bounce back.
The third layer has a unique design consisting of memory foam pillars on a foam base. Luxi calls it SBT or Support Balancing Technology.
Here’s how it works.
When you lie on the mattress, each pillar reacts to the amount of pressure on it. Pillars can either collapse to provide pressure relief or remain upright to boost support.
This provides customized comfort and support based on your weight and sleeping position.
Finally, there’s a base layer consisting of high-density polyfoam.
Adjusting mattress comfort is very simple.
Just unzip the soft quilted cover to access the interchangeable layers below.
If you want to make the mattress softer, flip the top section of the mattress to bring the SBT layer on top.
To make it firmer, bring the base layer on top or just flip the whole mattress.
I recommend trying out different configurations until you find the most comfortable one.
Most people find the default medium-firm set up to be comfortable enough. If you don’t like it, try the softer or firmer configurations.
Overall, the mattress sleeps very comfortably as long as you adjust it appropriately to fit your comfort needs.
The combination of memory foam and latex foam ensures you have the best of both types of foam. The memory foam gives the pressure relief, and latex foam provides the support.
The latex foam layer also helps keep the mattress cool by dissipating excess heat away by the mattress. The airflow-enhancing SBT layer complements it.
Motion control is minimal, which is great for fidgety couples.
Edge support is a bit lacking, but that’s normal for a memory foam mattress.
Trial Period And Warranty
The trial period is an unprecedented 1,000 days. That’s longer than any other mattress.
Take your time to find the best configuration that works for you. There’s no rush.
The warranty is ten years and non-prorated.
Best Budget Flippable Mattress: Amore
Amore Beds sells three mattresses: a 12” hybrid coil mattress, a 12.5” luxury hybrid mattress, and an 11” foam 2-sided mattress.
Amore's flippable mattress is one of the most affordable 2-sided mattresses of its quality you can buy online.
This mattress has a whopping ten layers, including an organic cotton cover and natural wool fire protection.
But that’s not too many considering that these are two mattresses in 1.
Shipping is free within the contiguous United States, and returns are free as well.
The ten layers are divided into two sections, with the layers repeating in each section.
At the very top, there is a luxury quilted organic cotton cover. It wicks away moisture and improves airflow to keep you cool.
For $100 extra, you can opt for the copper ion-infused cover that has better cooling capabilities and several therapeutic benefits.
A layer of organic wool blend sits beneath the cover to provide more cooling and moisture-wicking. It also acts as chemical-free fire protection.
Below are three foam layers that make up the top half of the mattress. They include:
- 1” proprietary fusion flex med-soft foam for pressure relief and contouring.
- 2” hyper-contouring transition foam for deep contouring.
- 2” high-density open-cell specialty foam that provides spinal alignment and reduces tossing and turning. It also promotes proper ventilation inside the mattress.
Below the three layers is a core layer made from high-density foam. It provides deep compression support no matter which side of the mattress you sleep on.
The bottom section repeats the hyper-contouring transition foam, the proprietary fusion flex-foam, the organic wool blend, and the organic cotton cover layers.
This ensures you sleep cool and comfortable on either side of the mattress.
Each side of the mattress provides a different feel. One side is firm while the other is soft. If you want more contouring or extra support, just flip the mattress.
The proprietary fusion flex-foam provides a comfy plush top while the transition foam contours around your body to relieve pressure.
Back support is great in all sleeping positions.
The mattress sleeps very cool thanks to the organic cotton cover, the moisture-wicking wool blend, and open-cell foam.
Responsiveness is not as much as in a latex foam mattress, but the mattress doesn’t feel swampy at all. You’ll find it easy to turn and move around on the bed.
Motion control is almost non-existent because of the all-foam construction.
Trial Period And Warranty
The Amore flippable mattress comes with a 100-night no-pressure trial period. Returns are completely free if you don’t like the mattress.
The warranty is standard for ten years.
Best Warranty: Nolah Signature 12” Flippable Mattress
As I mentioned, 2-sided mattresses generally last longer compared to conventional one-sided mattresses.
Nolah backs up their longevity claims with a lifetime warranty.
They can do this confidently because of the kind of materials used in the mattress.
The proprietary AirFoam used on both sides of the mattress is more resilient than either memory foam or latex foam.
The flippable design gives you an option between soft and firm comfort levels.
Shipping is free for all 48 states in the continental US.
The signature part of the Nolah mattress is the Airfoam used at the top and bottom.
Airfoam is neither memory foam nor latex foam. Nolah says it is more durable than either type of foam and provides better cooling and support than memory foam.
The other two layers of the mattress include a high-resilience foam layer for deep support and a 7” reinforced high-density core foundation that keeps the mattress going for years and years.
All these layers are wrapped in a luxurious organic cotton cover that keeps the mattress cool and fresh, even on the warmest nights.
The sleeping experience will vary depending on which side you sleep on.
The soft side feels plush and has great pressure relief. Most people will find it to be the most comfortable side.
It’s especially good for side sleepers who need extra contouring.
The firm side feels more solid. It has extra compression support, which is great for heavier sleepers, stomach sleepers, and some back sleepers.
Flipping the mattress over to change the firmness level is easy, and you can do it on your own.
Because there is no memory foam in the mattress, heat retention is not an issue.
Airfoam has excellent ventilation to keep heat flowing away from the mattress. The organic cotton cover also helps keep the mattress cool and dry.
Another advantage of having no memory foam is that the mattress is a bit more responsive than most foam mattresses. This makes it easier to turn at night and get up from the bed.
It also makes the mattress great for sex.
Trial Period And Warranty
You have 120 nights to try out both sides of the mattress and decide which one works best for you.
I suggest sleeping on each side for at least two weeks before making a final decision on whether to return it.
Remember that returns are free. Nolah will arrange how the mattress will be picked up for donation to charity or recycling.
If you keep the mattress, Nolah has a very generous lifetime warranty. It’s non-prorated.
For as long as you own the mattress, it’s covered against manufacturer and material defects such as sagging and torn cover seams.
Best for Heavier Sleepers and Stomach Sleepers: Plank by Brooklyn Bedding
If you weigh more than average, you’ll need a flippable mattress that provides adequate support on both sides.
Plank by Brooklyn Bedding exactly does that. It is designed specifically to offer a firmer sleeping experience than most mattresses.
One side is extra-firm while the other is firm.
The added firmness ensures you do not bottom out, no matter your weight.
Plank is not just ideal for bigger, bodied individuals. It’s also a great choice for most stomach sleepers. It offers good spinal alignment, ensuring you don’t wake up with aches and pains.
The Plank mattress consists of two layers plus a quilted cover on both sides of the mattress.
The extra-firm side starts with a 0.75” quilted gel memory foam. The quilted layer contours around your pressure point to relieve pressure. But it’s thin enough that the mattress retains its extra-firm feel.
Below the cover is a 2” layer of firm TitanFlex foam that provides even weight distribution and deep compression support.
At the bottom of the mattress is a 7” high-density base that provides further support and keeps the mattress in good shape for years.
There’s one more layer below the base: a 1.5” quilted gel memory foam layer. This forms the comfort layer of the firm side when you flip the mattress.
The extra 0.75 inches of memory foam provides a deeper hug for added pressure relief.
If you are a hot sleeper, you can add a cooling panel to your order and place it on top of the mattress. The panel contains phase change materials (PCMs) that provide a cool-to-the-touch feel.
Both sides of the Plank mattress are pretty firm.
The firm side is rated at about 7.5-8.5/10. The extra-firm side is rated at about 9-10/10 (yes, it’s that firm).
There’s very little sinkage. The quilted padding on both sides is too thin to create anything close to a plush sleeping experience.
But this is a good thing for overweight sleepers. Because the mattress can take on your weight without sinking, your spine stays properly aligned.
The best Side of the mattress depends on your weight. Most heavier sleepers and stomach sleepers will prefer the firm side.
Heavier couples and obese persons may find the extra-firm side to be more supportive.
The Plank mattress sleeps fairly cool. Because it doesn't wrap around your body, there’s no chance for the foam to trap heat.
But if you are a hot sleeper, you’ll appreciate the extra cooling panel available with the mattress (at extra cost).
One advantage of sleeping on a firm foam mattress like Plank is its surprising level of responsiveness.
It’s not quite as bouncy as a pocket coil mattress, but it doesn’t have the ‘stuck in the mattress’ feel of most medium-firm or soft foam mattresses. This makes Plank a good mattress for sex and for sleepers who toss and turn a lot during sleep.
Trial Period and Warranty
The Plank mattress comes with a 120-night in-home trial period. There’s a mandatory trial period of 30 nights before you can make a return.
The warranty is ten years long and covers permanent body impressions greater than 1” and any other manufacturing defects.
Best Value: Alexander Signature Series® Flippable
If you want a two-sided luxury mattress at a bargain price, we recommend the Alexander Signature Series Flippable mattress.
Alexander Signature Series is an all-foam mattress that provides a medium or luxury firm feel depending on which side of the mattress you sleep on.
It is a bit more expensive than basic foam mattresses but is much more affordable as compared to many luxury foam mattresses.
The Alexander Signature Series mattress is 14” and five layers thick. This may seem like overkill, but it’s perfect for a two-sided mattress.
It ensures you get adequate support and contouring on either side of the mattress.
Each side of the mattress starts with a 1.5” layer of soft quilting foam wrapped in a breathable organic cotton cover.
At 15ILD, the quilted foam layer feels luxuriously plush. It hugs your body, relieving pressure on your shoulders, hips, and back.
Below the quilted top is a 2” layer of gel memory foam. This layer is available only on the medium side. The combination of plush quilting and gel memory foam makes for a softer comfort feel.
After the memory foam is a transition layer of 24ILD polyfoam, it ensures you don’t sink too much, even with the soft quilting and memory foam.
A thick 7” core of 30ILD poly foam provides deep compression support for both sides of the mattress. It also gives the other side of the mattress its firmer feel.
Most people will find the medium side to be the most comfortable. The plush feel of the quilted cover and memory foam layer is great for your back and joints.
Side sleepers will love the extra body contouring provided by the medium side.
If you are a stomach sleeper or weigh a bit more than average, flip the mattress to the luxury firm side. Because there’s no memory foam on this side, it has less sinkage. This boosts support, ensuring your spine maintains its natural curvature.
As for temperature control, the Alexander Signature Series mattress does a decent job.
The luxury firm side sleeps cooler than the medium side. There’s no memory foam to trap heat, and there’s less foam in close contact with your body.
But the softer side is not too hot. Gel-infused into the memory foam helps keep you cool. The breathable cotton cover helps too.
Trial Period and Warranty
Nest Bedding offers a 100-night trial for all their mattresses, including the Alexander Signature Series flippable mattress.
There is a mandatory adjustment period of 30 days. After that (but before 100 days are over), you can return your mattress if you don’t like it or exchange it for another mattress.
If you decide to keep the mattress, Nest Bedding offers a lifetime warranty.
Best Hybrid Flippable Mattress: Idle Hybrid
You may have noticed something common with most two-sided mattresses: they are all-foam. It is difficult to come across a flippable mattress that contains innersprings.
Luckily, Idle is here to meet your needs. If you’d like a mattress with a bit of bounce, more support, and excellent cooling, we recommend the Idle Hybrid mattress.
The Idle Hybrid mattress has three layers on each side with a pocket coil core in the middle. It is 14” thick.
Let’s start with the cover. It is a Thermocool fabric that maintains the surface of the mattress at the perfect temperature all the time. It cools you when you are hot and warms you when you are cold.
Below the cover is a natural fire resistant barrier. The IDLE Hybrid mattress does not use chemical fire retardants or synthetic barriers made from nylon or polyester.
The first foam layer is 1” of IDLE contouring foam; its plush feels providing instant pressure relief when you lie on the mattress.
2″ of IDLE cooling buoyancy foam follows. The custom foam blend has superior pressure-point relief to memory foam and reacts much faster so you don't get the dreaded ‘stuck in bed' feeling. It also sleeps cooler than memory foam.
A 1″ support transition layer completes one side of the mattress.
Next is a 6” core consisting of edge-to-edge individually encased coils. They provide deep compression support and deep contouring. They also limit motion transfer from your partner (or pet).
The coils are laid out from edge to edge to ensure good edge support.
The first three foam layers above the coil core are replicated on the other side for a total of 7 layers.
IDLE lets you choose which mattress firmness you prefer when ordering. The two main firmness options are medium and luxury firm.
There's also a third option where you can mix the two firmness levels; luxury firm on one side and medium on the other.
If you are 100% sure you know which firmness level you like, choose one of the first two.
The Medium option is the best one for 90% of sleepers. It feels great in all sleeping positions.
The Luxury Firm option is ideal for stomach sleepers and those who weigh more than average. It provides extra compression support to keep you from bottoming out.
But if you are not so sure or you think your comfort needs might change in the future, choose the combined luxury firm/medium option. You can then flip the mattress to get a feel of each firmness.
Note: Prices are the same whether you choose the medium, luxury firm or the combined medium and luxury firm.
Both sides of the mattress sleep very cool. The lack of memory foam helps keep temperatures comfortable.
But what makes all the difference is the special Thermocool fabric and the ventilation-boosting pocketed coils.
Trial Period and Warranty
IDLE provides the second-longest in-home trial period that we’ve seen in any online mattress. The longest we’ve seen is 1,000 days for the Luxi mattress.
IDLE lets you try their hybrid mattress for 18 months.
The warranty is equally as generous – it lasts a lifetime.
Benefits & Downsides Of Flippable Mattresses
The biggest benefit of flippable mattresses is exactly that…they are flippable.
This has several advantages.
1. Longer Lasting
A 2-sided mattress will last several years longer, sometimes even twice as long as a comparable single-sided mattress.
The explanation for this is simple. When you flip the mattress over, the other side gets a chance to recover and regain its shape.
As a result, your mattress goes for longer without sagging and losing support.
If you are looking for an affordable foam mattress that will last 10-20 years, a flippable 2-sided mattress is a good bet.
A couple of the mattresses in our list – Layla and Nolah – go as far as offering a lifetime warranty while Saatva provides a 20-year warranty on their Zenhaven mattress.
It’s unusual to come across foam mattresses with such long warranties. It says something about their quality and durability.
2. Multiple Comfort Options
Most 2-sided mattresses don’t just offer two comfortable sides to sleep on; they also give sleepers at least two comfort options.
One side of the mattress is soft or medium-firm while the other is firm.
Some flippable mattresses like Luxi provide three comfort levels – soft, medium, and firm.
The ability to adjust the firmness level at home means you don’t have to worry about buying the wrong mattress.
If one side feels too soft or hurts your back, just flip the mattress over.
Most people find that they don’t need to make a return.
One other advantage of having multiple comfort options is that you can adjust firmness in the future when your comfort needs change.
If, for instance, you normally sleep on the softer side but add a little weight or get pregnant, you might find that the firmer side provides better support.
Or perhaps you are used to the firm side, but you get a back or hip injury.
The softer side might be more comfortable because of the extra pressure relief.
Instead of spending money on a new mattress, you just flip it.
3. More Value For Your Money
Don’t assume that 2-sided mattresses will cost you more than the conventional types. 2-sided mattresses cost around the same as comparable single-sided mattresses.
You can get some pretty awesome deals with mattresses like Amore, which starts at just $320.
Dollar for dollar, you get more bang for your buck with a flippable mattress.
You are essentially buying two mattresses for the price of one. The mattress also lasts longer, meaning you can go for more years before you need to buy a new mattress.
4. More Comfortable
I’m not saying that conventional 1-sided mattresses are uncomfortable. We have reviewed many great ones on this site.
But some single-sided mattresses compromise on quality.
They have a thin comfort section that provides bare minimum support and contouring. They then add a thick slab of cheap, low-quality foam at the bottom.
You’ll be lucky if the mattress lasts more than five years without sagging and hurting your back.
Manufacturers of 2-sided mattresses, on the other hand, cannot afford to pad the mattress height with low-quality materials.
They have to make both sides comfortable to sleep on.
They use better quality materials and construct the mattress in such a way that it provides excellent support and contouring on each side.
No gimmicks to make the mattress seem more luxurious and comfortable than it is.
I can only think of two disadvantages of the flippable mattress.
One of them is that you have to flip the mattress, which is tedious if the mattress is heavy.
But with two people, flipping a mattress is easy. If you plan to buy the Zenhaven mattress, Saatva offers to send a team to flip the mattress for you.
And anyway, it’s not like you are flipping the mattress every day or even every month. Once or twice a year at most.
The other downside is that it’s hard to get a split flippable mattress. In our reviews above, only Luxi offers a split option.
This is a disadvantage for couples with different comfort preferences.
Types Of Flippable Mattresses Available For Sale
Most of the flippable mattresses sold online are all-foam. A few are memory foam, others are latex foam, and others have a combination of different foams.
Some use their proprietary foams.
Some companies sell 2-sided spring and hybrid mattresses.
If you are shopping for a new mattress, I highly recommend looking beyond the more common single-sided mattresses.
2-sided mattresses not only provide better value for your money, but they also last longer and are likely to be more comfortable.
The ability to adjust firmness at home is also a huge advantage.
In our opinion, Layla is the best flippable 2-sided mattress sold online. It’s affordable, comes with two comfort options and has a lifetime warranty.
