Shopping for a pillow top mattress?
You’ve come to the right place.
Pillow top mattresses have extra padding on top that provides a plush sleeping surface.
The padding – which can be wool, ultra-soft foam, or fiber –extends over the top of the mattress and is usually sewn into the cover to keep it from shifting.
Pillow top mattresses are incredibly comfortable. Most people describe sleeping on a pillow top mattress like sleeping on a fluffy cloud.
The fluffy layer provides instant pressure relief. And since it’s usually just an inch or two thick, it doesn’t compromise support.
What’s In This Guide?
In this 15-minute buying guide, we have reviewed some of the best pillow top mattresses you can order online.
We include a range of different types and firmness levels so you can find a pillow top mattress that’s right for you.
Note: A pillow top mattress is not automatically soft. A mattress can have a pillow top and still have an overall firm or medium-firm feel depending on the construction of the comfort and support layers.
If you are specifically looking for a soft mattress, check out our reviews of the best soft and plush mattresses.

1. Editor’s Choice: DreamCloud
DreamCloud’s quilted Euro Top works with a gel memory foam comfort layer to provide a plush, pressure-relieving sleeping surface.
For a luxury 15” thick mattress, DreamCloud is surprisingly affordable. It costs about the same as a high-quality memory foam mattress.
DreamCloud is not only our top choice, but it’s also our top value pick. If you are looking for an affordable and luxurious pillow top mattress, we highly recommend DreamCloud.
Pros
- Great price.
- Extra-plush pillow top.
- 15” profile provides deep compression support, making it ideal for heavier sleepers.
- Suitable for most types of sleepers.
- Lifetime warranty.
Cons
- Not ideal for side sleepers weighing less than 130lbs – it’ll feel too firm.
Our Review
DreamCloud is a hybrid mattress (as you’ll notice, most pillow-top mattresses are hybrids). It combines a soft body-conforming comfort section with a firm, supportive pocket coil base.
The mattress starts with, obviously, a pillow top. The pillow top consists of fiberfill and a thin layer of soft polyfoam, quilted together to provide a non-shifting plush mattress surface.
Below the pillow top is a layer of gel memory foam that provides extra contouring and pressure relief. Gel-infused into the foam draws heat away from your body.
The next three layers make up the support section of the DreamCloud mattress. They include a transitional polyfoam layer, a pocketed coil layer, and a base foam layer.
The five layers add up to a 15-inch height, making DreamCloud one of the thicker mattresses online and probably the thickest mattress you can get for its price.
Comfort and Firmness
DreamCloud is a medium-firm mattress, what the company calls Luxury Firm. We rank its firmness at about 6.5/10, though your experience will vary based on your sleeping position and body weight.
DreamCloud is designed to fit most types of sleepers. It’s especially ideal for back sleepers, including those with back pain.
The contouring pillow top and memory foam balance out perfectly with the pocket coil core to provide great lumbar support and spinal alignment.
Stomach sleepers will also love the mattress. Though you’ll sink a bit at first, the mattress quickly evens out to keep your body properly aligned.
DreamCloud is also great for side sleepers, but only those of average or higher than average weight (130lbs and over). If you weigh less than 130lbs, you probably won’t sink enough to enjoy the body-conforming pillow top. The mattress may feel uncomfortably firm.
When it comes to temperature control, DreamCloud does a great job. The gel memory foam layer draws heat away from your body while airflow through the pocket coils ensures there’s no heat buildup inside the mattress.
Motion isolation is also great, thanks to the individually wrapped coils. You’ll also love DreamCloud if you like sleeping on a responsive mattress.

2. Best Luxury: WinkBed
The WinkBed luxury hybrid mattress is our top recommendation for people looking for a high-end mattress with deep support and plush body contouring.
It is one of the best plush pillow top mattresses available in the market that uses a dual coil system to improve compression support and contouring for all types of sleepers.
WinkBed is available in four comfort options, including a Plus version for heavier sleepers. The other three options are softer, luxury firm, and firmer.
Pros
- Luxurious sleeping experience.
- Three comfort options – suitable for a wide range of sleepers.
- It is affordably priced…for a 13.5” luxury hybrid mattress.
- Excellent cooling performance.
- Supportive dual springs construction.
Cons
- Mild off-gassing when new.
- A bit of motion transfer and noise.
Our Review
The WinkBed luxury hybrid mattress starts with a 2-layer Euro pillow top. Both layers are made with Hypersoft Foam, but one of them is infused with cooling gel, which pulls heat from your body for a cooler sleep.
The plushness of the pillow top varies with the firmness level of the mattress.
The soft WinkBed has an extra-plush pillow top; the luxury firm WinkBed has a medium-firm pillow top while the firm WinkBed has a firmer pillow top.
Below the pillow top, the WinkBed mattress gets quite interesting. It has a dual innerspring system, which makes for a more supportive mattress.
Beneath the pillow top is the first coil system – a layer of foam-encased micro coils. The smaller coils provide a mixture of both support and body contouring.
Below that is the main coil system – a standard layer of larger pocket coils that mostly provide compression support. This layer is also encased in polyfoam.
The luxury firm and firm options have a 7-zone pocket coil system, while the soft option has a 5-zone system. The zones provide targeted support and contouring to different areas of your body.
In the soft WinkBed, there’s an additional layer of gel foam between the two coil systems. It provides additional pressure relief, especially for side sleepers.
All WinkBed mattresses come with a breathable Tencel cover.
Comfort and Firmness
As we mentioned, you can choose from three comfort options: soft, medium-firm, and firm. There’s also a denser and firmer Plus option.
All three options offer quick pressure relief from the pillow top. The extra-plush pillow top on the soft WinkBed provides the best pressure relief while the pillow top on the medium-firm and firm options balances between body-hugging and lumbar support.
If you sleep on your side, get the soft WinkBed. The extra layer of gel foam makes a big difference. It allows the mattress to hug your body more closely and cushion your shoulder and hip from pressure.
The medium-firm (luxury firm) option is ideal for most types of sleepers, including the back, stomach, and heavier side sleepers.
The firm option is best for stomach sleepers and heavier sleepers weighing over 230lbs (but under 300lbs).
Because of the dual coil layers, WinkBed is more responsive than other hybrid mattresses. This makes it a great mattress for sex, but it causes a bit of motion transfer.
The dual coil system also makes WinkBed noisier than a typical hybrid mattress. Keep this in mind if your bedroom has thin walls.
As for temperature control, WinkBed has no heating issues. The two coil layers greatly improve airflow, which quickly dissipates excess heat. Gel foam in the pillow top also helps keep the mattress temperature neutral.

3. Best Innerspring: Saatva
Saatva is another hybrid innerspring mattress that uses a dual coil system to provide better compression support and body contouring.
You can choose from three comfort options depending on your sleeping position and body weight. You can also choose your preferred mattress height: 11.5” or 14.5”.
Pros
- Excellent support from the dual coil system.
- Pressure-relieving Euro pillow top.
- Free in-home setup and old mattress removal.
- Multiple comfort and height options – suitable for a wide range of sleepers.
- Affordable pricing.
Cons
- Some motion transfer.
Our Review
Saatva’s Euro-style pillow top packs more foam and fiber padding than standard pillow tops, giving it a plusher and fluffier feel.
The pillow top is wrapped in an organic cotton cover that contains Saatva’s exclusive Guardin® botanical antimicrobial treatment.
A layer of memory foam and polyfoam beneath the pillow top provides additional pressure relief.
In the Plush Soft Saatva, an additional 2.5” comfort foam layer provides deep contouring and pressure relief for side sleepers.
All three comfort options use a dual-coil core. The first is a pocket coil base that provides a balance of body contouring and deep compression support.
The second is a Bonnell steel coil layer that’s mostly for support. It provides overall stability and keeps the mattress from sagging.
Thick foam encasement around the mattress provides robust edge support, allowing you to sleep comfortably anywhere on the mattress.
Saatva also has a unique feature they call active wire lumbar zone technology that provides additional support around your midsection.
Comfort and Firmness
Saatva lets you choose the firmness you think fits you best. There’s Plush Soft, Luxury Firm, and Firm.
Plush Soft (3/10) is best for side sleepers who need the extra-deep hug.
Luxury firm (5-7/10) is the universal option that most people will find comfortable. It provides a great balance of soft contouring and firm support. It’s also a great choice for couples with varying comfort preferences.
Firm (8/10) is best for stomach sleepers and heavier back sleepers.
You can also select between an 11.5” and 14.5” mattress, but the difference between the two comes down to aesthetics. An 11.5” luxury firm Saatva will feel the same as a 14.5” luxury firm Saatva.
Temperature regulation in the Saatva mattress is great. With more coils in the mattress, heat dissipates quickly to keep the mattress cool.
What you may not like so much is the motion transfer. It’s not as bad as traditional innerspring mattresses, but it may affect you if your partner tosses a lot.
The mattress may also produce some noise during, particularly vigorous movements. The Bonnell coil layer also tends to get noisier as the mattress ages. But the thick foam layers and the pocket coils above help reduce the amount of noise.

4. Best Organic: Avocado
If you prefer buying organic bedding, we recommend the Avocado Green Mattress. It is an eco-friendly mattress made with organic and natural materials, including GOLS-certified latex, natural wool, and an organic cotton cover.
A standard Avocado mattress doesn’t come with a pillow top. To add a pillow top to your mattress, you have to pay more – an additional $400 if you are buying a queen size.
This makes it one of the best pillow top queen mattresses in our guide, coming with a bit high price tag, but compared to luxury organic mattresses in brick-and-mortar stores, it is still a great bargain.
Pros
- Organic and eco-friendly.
- Plush Euro pillow-top offers quick pressure relief.
- Sleeps cool.
- Hybrid construction provides deep support for heavier sleepers.
- Long sleep trial and warranty.
Cons
- More expensive than most pillow top mattresses – but that’s because it is an organic mattress.
- Not ideal for those who prefer the deep body-conforming feel of memory foam.
Our Review
As we’ve mentioned, the standard 11” version of the Avocado Green mattress is not a pillow top mattress. So be careful you don’t miss the option to add a pillow top to your mattress – it’s right below the size selection to a dropdown.
Adding a pillow top costs between $240 (twin size) and $500 (Cal King) on top of the price of the mattress and increases the mattress height to 13”.
Note that the pillow top is attached permanently to the mattress.
The Euro pillow top is 2” thick. And because Avocado is an organic mattress, the pillow top doesn’t contain polyurethane foam or fiber like most pillow tops.
Instead, it’s padded with plush organic latex.
The pillow top is wrapped in a GOTS-certified organic cotton cover. Below the pillow top is organic wool sourced from family collectives in India.
The wool provides additional padding, helps with thermal regulation, and acts as a natural fire retardant.
Next are three layers of GOLS organic Dunlop latex. The first layer starts soft (14-19 ILD) to provide pressure relief, the second one is medium firm (20-25 ILD) to provide deep contouring and transitional support, and the third one is even firmer (26-31 ILD) for compression support.
The base is an 8” layer of the individually wrapped coil. The coils are made from 100% recycled steel in keeping with the eco-friendliness of the mattress.
The pocket coils are arranged in five zones to provide targeted support and contouring.
- Reinforced side rails for edge support
- Reinforced header and footer rails ensure all-round edge support, not just on the sides
- An upper body zone with gentle coils to contour to your body
- A lumbar support zone with firmer coils to keep your spine aligned
- A lower body zone with gentle coils
Comfort and Firmness
The Avocado Green pillow top mattress has a medium-firm comfort feel. The 2” pillow top adds a plush feel to the mattress, one that side sleepers will appreciate most.
The mattress is suitable for most types of sleepers, including back sleepers, stomach sleepers, and side sleepers weighing less than 130 lbs.
For side sleepers weighing more than 130lbs, the mattress may feel too firm, especially under your shoulder and hip.
One thing to note about Avocado Green is that it feels quite different from mattresses with memory foam or polyfoam. While the top latex layers – including the pillow top – provide adequate pressure relief for most sleepers, you won’t get the same deep hug memory foam provides.
If you love to sink into your mattress, Avocado Green is not for you.
But if you are looking for a supportive mattress with just the right amount of hug to prevent uncomfortable pressure points, we highly recommend Avocado.
It is also a good choice for heavier sleepers. The coils and latex foam provide plenty of support.
We also recommend Avocado to hot sleepers. The naturally cool latex combined with the ventilation-boosting pocket coils makes for a cool mattress all year round.
We love how responsive the mattress is. It is not bouncy to the point of being annoying, just enough to make it easier to get out of bed and change sleeping positions.
Motion isolation is surprisingly good for a latex mattress with a pocket coil.

5. Custom Fit: Helix Luxe
Getting fitted for a dress or suit? Sure. But getting a custom fit mattress?
That’s exactly what Helix Sleep offers. Take a sleep quiz, and they recommend the best mattress for your comfort needs.
To ensure they have a mattress for every type of sleeper, Helix sells 13 different mattresses. Helix Luxe is their luxury range, consisting of six pillow-top mattresses designed for all types of sleepers.
Pros
- Wide range of options to suit different sleeper types.
- The plush pillow top provides quick pressure relief.
- Excellent cooling performance.
- Long warranty.
Cons
- With so many options, it can be hard to choose the right one (try the sleep quiz).
Our Review
The challenge with buying a Helix Luxe mattress is picking the right one for your needs from all the options available.
Luckily, Helix Sleep makes it easy for you. You can take the sleep quiz, and Helix will recommend the best pillow top foam mattress or check which mattress Helix recommends for specific types of sleepers.
They have three categories of Luxe mattresses, arranged by feel: soft feel (Sunset Luxe and Moonlight Luxe), medium feel (Midnight Luxe and Dusk Luxe), and firm feel (Twilight Luxe and Dawn Luxe).
The mattresses have a very similar construction, with only a few minor differences in the materials and firmness of specific layers.
All six mattresses start with a plush polyfoam-filled pillow top wrapped in a breathable Tencel cover.
Next is a memory foam layer, which is present only in the Sunset, Midnight, and Twilight Luxe mattresses. These mattresses are designed for side sleepers, hence the soft memory foam layer on top to provide pressure relief.
The Moonlight, Dusk and Dawn Luxe mattresses have a top layer of Helix Dynamic foam. This is a type of polyfoam exclusive to Helix mattresses. It is more responsive and sleeps cooler than memory foam.
All six mattresses have a second comfort layer made from Helix Dynamic Foam and a transitional support layer made from polyfoam.
All mattresses also have an 8” pocketed coil core and a high-density foam base.
Each mattress is 14” thick, which means you’ll need to get sheets with extra-deep pockets.
Comfort and Firmness
All Helix Luxe mattresses are comfortable. The trick is choosing the right one. Helix Sleep recommends Sunset, Midnight, and Twilight for side sleepers and Moonlight, Dusk and Dawn for back and stomach sleepers.
The side-sleeping Luxe mattresses have memory foam to provide deep contouring while the back and stomach-sleeping options use Helix Dynamic Foam to provide lumbar support and spinal alignment.
Go with your weight when choosing the best firmness level.
Lighter than average sleepers (less than 130lbs) should pick one of the soft feel mattresses, average weight sleepers (130lbs-230lbs) will find the medium feel mattresses to be most comfortable. In contrast, heavier sleepers (over 230lbs) should choose the firm to feel mattresses to ensure adequate support.
Helix Sleep gives you plenty of time to test the mattress at home, and returns are free. So don’t worry that you’ll be stuck with an uncomfortable mattress.
All Luxe mattresses have excellent temperature control thanks to the breathable cover and pocket coils.
They are also fairly responsive, though not as bouncy as other innerspring mattresses.

6. Best for Heavier People: Saatva HD
The Saatva HD mattress is built specifically for heavier sleepers weighing between 300lbs and 500lbs. It uses resilient foams and a tempered steel coil base to ensure adequate support and longevity (it comes with a 20-year warranty).
For pressure relief and body contouring, the Saatva HD mattress has an organic cotton pillow top and a Talalay latex comfort layer.
The only downside is the high price tag.
Pros
- Excellent support for larger people.
- The plush comfort layer provides contouring and pressure relief.
- Long warranty – indicates durability.
- Free white glove delivery.
Cons
- Expensive.
Our Review
Most hybrid pillow-top mattresses can comfortably support heavier sleepers weighing more than 230lbs.
But most top out at 300lbs.
If you weigh more than that, you have to find a mattress that provides exceptionally good support. The Saatva HD is one such mattress.
Unlike other hybrid mattresses, Saatva HD can support between 300lbs and 500lbs of weight, per sleeper.
It does this using a highly resilient 15.5” thick construction consisting of softer foams at the top and a pocket coil base in the base.
At the top is a pillow top that gives the mattress a plush, luxurious feel. The pillow top is wrapped in an organic cotton cover.
Next is a responsive support layer made with Talalay latex. It gives the mattress a buoyant feel, making it easy to move about on the bed and switch sleeping positions.
The layer has five distinct zones that provide targeted support and pressure relief for your back, hips, and shoulders.
Next is a comfort layer consisting of memory foam and polyfoam. This layer provides a mixture of body contouring, pressure relief, and support.
Below this is the core of the mattress consisting of 12.5-gauge steel coils. They are thicker and stronger than coils found in most hybrid mattresses.
The coil layer keeps you from sinking too much into the mattress, regardless of your weight. It also keeps the mattress in good form for years, preventing the common middle sag that most mattresses develop.
To ensure you are comfortable no matter where on the bed you are sleeping, the Saatva HD mattress has high-density foam rails that boost edge support.
The edge support system ensures you don’t roll off the bed and make it more comfortable to sit at the edge of the mattress.
Note: Saatva offers a foundation designed specifically for the Saatva HD mattress. It is a wooden slat foundation available in two heights: 4.75” and 8.75”.
Comfort and Firmness
Sleepers weighing between 300 and 500lbs will experience the Saatva HD mattress as medium-firm. Do not buy the mattress if you weigh less than 230lbs – it will be too firm for you.
The plush pillow top and comfort layers work with the firm coil base to provide a balance of soft body contouring and firm support.
The Saatva HD mattress suits all sleeping positions.
Sleeping hot is a common problem for larger sleepers. Fortunately, Saatva HD sleeps cool. The breathable cotton cover and the coils help dissipate excess heat away from the mattress. The cover also wicks away sweat.
It also helps that there’s a latex layer right beneath the pillow top, instead of memory foam. Latex foam doesn’t trap heat, which keeps the surface of the mattress cool.
Other areas where the Saatva HD mattress performs well include motion isolation, responsiveness, and edge support.

What is a Pillow Top Mattress?
A pillow top mattress has additional soft padding at the top. This padding is what’s called a pillow top.
The purpose of a pillow top is to provide a plusher, more luxurious sleeping surface. The pillow top readily hugs your joints and curves, providing quick pressure relief when you lie on the bed.
Most pillow tops are padded with soft foam, either polyfoam or memory foam (or both). Some pillow tops contain fiber filling or wool.
While a pillow top can make a mattress more comfortable, it has some downsides. The main one is the heat-retention. The foam can trap heat, making the mattress uncomfortable, especially for those who are heat-sensitive.
Also, the mattress can become too soft for some people, especially stomach sleepers. If you prefer sleeping on (rather than in) the mattress, avoid pillow top foams. Most stomach sleepers may also want to avoid mattresses with pillow tops as they can affect spinal alignment.
Standard vs. Euro Pillow Tops
You may have seen some companies refer to their mattresses as having a Euro pillow top or just a Euro-top.
The difference between a standard pillow top and a Euro pillow top is appearance.
A standard pillow top looks like a literal pillow on top of the mattress, albeit one that’s as large as the mattress.
The pillow top is a separate layer sewn on top of the mattress, creating a puffy mattress surface.
A Euro pillow top mattress has a cleaner look. The padding is sewn underneath the cover, and the pillow top is flush with the edges of the mattress. This eliminates the appearance of an extra puffy layer on top of the mattress.
The choice between a standard vs. Euro pillow top mostly comes down to aesthetic preferences. But it can also affect comfort: Euro pillow tops tend to have more padding, and this a plusher feel, compared to standard pillow tops.
Buying Guide: What to Look For
Here’s what to consider when you are shopping for a pillow top mattress.
Overall Thickness
Pillow top mattresses are generally thicker than average because of the extra padding on top. Most start at 13,” and you can find some as thick as 15”.
A thicker mattress requires deeper-pocketed sheets. Keep that in mind, when choosing a pillow top mattress. If your current sheets are not deep enough, you have to buy new ones.
Also, check whether the mattress thickness will work well with your current foundation. If your foundation is already high, adding a thick mattress can make it harder to get in and out of bed.
Tufted or Not?
Tufting is a way to secure the layers of the mattresses together to keep them from shifting.
We recommend a tufted pillow top mattress over one that’s not tufted. Tufting ensures the pillow top doesn’t shift and bunch up with time.
We also think tufting creates a beautifully textured surface, though that comes down to your tastes.
Materials
As you may have noticed from our reviews, most pillow-top mattresses are hybrids. If you choose a pillow top mattress, it likely contains coils, usually pocket coils.
The difference is in the comfort layers above. If you love a mattress that hugs you, look for one that uses memory foam or soft polyfoam in the top layers.
If you are looking for a firmer mattress with an ‘on the mattress’ feel, get one that uses firm poly foam or latex in the top layers.
Firmness and Feel
The ideal mattress firmness depends on your weight and sleeping position.
While pillow tops are typically plush, you can still find a firm pillow top mattress. It all depends on the materials used underneath.
Side sleepers should choose a soft or medium mattress (3-5/10) depending on body weight. Back sleepers should go with a medium to medium-firm mattress (5-6.5/10). Stomach sleepers should choose a medium-firm to firm mattress (6.5-8/10), based on body weight.
Cleaning Options
Most pillow-top mattresses have a Euro-style pillow top. Because the padding is usually attached to the cover, you cannot remove the cover for washing. You can only spot-clean it.
The best way to take care of your mattress, whether it has a removable cover or not, is to use a waterproof mattress protector. It’ll keep moisture, stains, and allergens away from the mattress.
Pillow Top Mattresses FAQs
Can you flip a pillow top mattress?
No, you cannot flip it. Pillow top mattresses are one-sided.
But it’s a good idea to rotate the mattress every 3-6 months, especially if there’s a significant weight difference between you and your partner.
Are pillow-top mattresses expensive?
Because most pillow-top mattresses are luxury mattresses, they tend to be more expensive than standard mattresses.
But if you buy online, you’ll spend way less money compared to buying in a brick and mortar store.
Do pillow-top mattresses sink?
We’ve seen many pillow top mattress owners complaining about their mattress sagging. It seems to be a common issue with pillow-top mattresses.
However, only the pillow top part is vulnerable to sagging since it’s made with very soft foam. And since most pillow tops are only an inch or two thin, some sinking shouldn’t affect support or spinal alignment.
You’ll only experience a little less plushness.
