We’ve reviewed several latex mattresses, but the Spindle latex mattress is the only one we know that lets you adjust the firmness/comfort level in 4 ways – in your own home.

This is a natural latex mattress with three layers of foam, which is pretty normal.

What’s not ordinary about the Spindle is that it is delivered in 3 separate boxes, each containing a 3” latex layer. These layers can be rearranged to customize the mattress firmness by switching out one layer with a firmer or softer one that Spindle sends you, free of charge.

On top of that, the Spindle mattress is one of the least expensive natural latex mattresses you can buy online. They offer a split configuration, too.

Keep reading for my in-depth take on this excellent, affordable latex mattress.

About Spindle

Spindle Latex Mattress

Based in Acton, Massachusetts, Spindle was founded in 2013 by Neal Van Patten, a man who knows a lot about the benefits of latex foam mattresses and wanted to spread the word about the characteristics of the oldest foam around.  You can read Neal's full story here.

When the Spindle latex mattress was launched, the online retail market was mostly selling memory foam mattresses, and today's leading mattress brands like Casper and Leesa were just finding their feet. No one was focused on latex other than higher-priced pure organic brands like PlushBeds (still one of our favorites).

But Spindle and a few other online-only latex mattress manufacturers including Nest and Zenhaven, have since worked hard to convince people that latex foam mattresses can be just as comfortable as gel/memory foam products  while retaining their chief benefits of natural, organic material and a cooling surface.

Of these, Spindle is the scrappiest startup with the lowest-priced product.

Social Impact

While Spindle doesn’t work with any charities yet (or at least doesn't disclose it publicly), Spindle contributes a lot of other social, economic and environmental benefits through their manufacturing process.

For example, they source their fabrics and latex from sustainable sources. This not only ensures the best quality raw materials but also protects the environment.

They do all of their manufacturing in the US (mattresses in Massachusetts, latex in Pennsylvania and foundations in Arizona). This provides high-quality American jobs and ensures the best quality mattress. And people, not robots, sew their mattress covers.

Purchase Process

The Spindle mattress is available in several online stores including Amazon and Etsy – but you may not get all the benefits that you would by buying directly from Spindle.

So I highly recommend shopping on their official website to order the mattress directly from them. This offers several advantages:

>> You get to enjoy the 365-day comfort guarantee.

>> You’ll be eligible for their 25-year Comfort Life Program.

>> You also get a 60-day money back guarantee if they lower their prices within 60 days after you buy the mattress. You’ll be refunded the difference. Ensures you don’t miss out on offer even after making an order.

>> You’ll get better customer support and assistance.

You can read more about of their warranty and 1-year trial period, below.

When you are ready to order just go to the main product page and select your size. They offer all standard sizes except California King.

Next, select your preferred firmness level. There offer four firmness options:

  • soft
  • medium
  • firm and
  • extra firm.

If you are torn about which one to choose, they offer a quiz on their homepage that tells you the ideal comfort level based on your height, weight and sleeping position.

But don’t worry about choosing the wrong mattress. They have a very flexible comfort guarantee policy. Within the first year, you can work with them to switch your mattress layers until it’s comfortable enough.

After you choose your preferred comfort level to add the mattress to cart and then checkout.

You can pay with your credit card, via check (takes longer to process) or PayPal.

You’ll be notified when your mattress has shipped.

365 Night Comfort Guarantee

Don’t call it a “trial period”.

According to Spindle it’s a Comfort Guarantee.

If after 365 days you don’t like your mattress they will give you a full refund, no questions asked.

This is quite different from the 100-day trial period offered by most online mattresses. It also works differently.

After 60 days, if your mattress feels a tad too firm or too soft, get in contact with Spindle. They’ll work with you to make the mattress perfect.

Usually, this will involve sending you another firmer or softer layer to replace one of the layers in the mattress.

But they may also ask you to try other things such as placing the mattress on the floor to check whether the problem is the foundation (their mattress must be placed on a completely flat surface).

If nothing works by the end of the 1-year mark after the date of purchase, they will gladly give you a refund.  They won’t pick up the mattress, though. They’ll ask you to take any labeling off the mattress and then donate it to charity. You then have to show proof of donation to get your full refund.

10-Year Warranty

Spindle Latex Mattress

Spindle provides a standard 10-year warranty with the usual terms – the returned mattress has to be in good condition, natural wear is not valid, you have to use the right foundation and so on.  In addition, you must use a mattress protector.

Here is the full warranty in PDF form.

↑ Table of Contents

25-Year Comfort Life Program

In addition to the warranty, they have something called the Comfort Life Program which runs for 25 years.

No, it’s not a pro-rated warranty. It’s a way to make sure your mattress lasts longer without losing support or getting less comfortable.

Here’s how it works.

At any time within the 25-year period, you can choose to modify your mattress by switching out a particular layer. You just need to contact Spindle directly to get the replacement layer.

They will sell you that 3” layer at a 30% discount of the current prices. So if the layer costs $300, you’ll get it at $210.

So if after around eight years your mattress has started to feel a bit too firm just order a softer layer instead of buying a whole new mattress. If it has softened and sagged after 20 years request a firmer replacement layer or two.

Note: This program is only valid for those who bought directly from Spindle. You won’t be eligible if you buy your mattress from another store like Wayfair, Amazon or Etsy.

Shipping

Spindle ships their mattresses rect direct from Acton, Massachusetts. You’ll receive a tracking number within a few hours of placing an order.

Note that processing may take longer, up to several days, if you pay via check. This is because they have to wait for the check to clear before processing your order. I recommend paying with your credit card or using PayPal credit.

Shipping is free to the 48 contiguous states. For Alaska and Hawaii, shipping charges will be added at checkout.

Delivery and Setup

The Spindle mattress will be delivered within seven days depending on your location.

They do not offer white glove service, so be ready to set up the mattress yourself. But it comes with clear instructions to guide you.

The mattress will arrive in three boxes – two boxes for the twin and twin XL – that should be easy to get in the door and carry up the stairs.

Each box is marked with the layer of latex it contains. One of them will also contain the cover.

Make sure you follow the instructions when setting it up.

One of the most important requirements is that two people should handle the setup. The latex is a bit delicate and can tear easily if you stretch or pull it.

When you’ve finished arranging the different layers, zip the cover over them and enjoy your new mattress.

Foundation and Frame

What type of bed frame/support does Spindle require?

Many beds cannot properly support an all-latex mattress due to its weight.

The Spindle mattress needs solid / sturdy and extra-flat support.

Spindle recommends using a slatted frame or another solid support such as a platform bed, a box foundation or your floor.

Do not use a box spring.  Read their foundation specification to learn more.

Does Spindle work on an adjustable bed?

Yes – but only heavy-duty steel adjustable frames. Spindle also sells Harvard / Hollywood frames on their website.

You can also use the mattress with a motorized adjustable bed.

Care and Cleaning

Is a mattress protector needed for Spindle?

Yes. If you don't use one, you'll void the warranty.

Do you need to rotate the Spindle mattress?

Spindle recommends rotating the mattress once every three months. To even out the wearing you should also interchange the layers.

They have a handy guide on how to do it without changing your mattress’ firmness.

Aesthetics and Styling

Spindle Latex Mattress

The Spindle mattress is only 10 inches thick. It doesn’t look very luxurious in a room. But it makes up for it with a soft cover decorated with beautiful wave patterns.

Construction

Spindle Latex Mattress

There is nothing complicated about the construction of the Spindle mattress. It’s basically three 3” layers of latex stacked together.

They are arranged differently depending on the firmness level you choose:

Every configuration of the mattress is 10 inches thick.

Mattress Cover

Spindle Latex Mattress

The cover is made from organic cotton that has been grown in New Mexico, Texas or India. It feels soft and cool. It’s made with a circular knit which is more durable, more breathable and stretchier than woven fabric.

Just below the cover, there is a thin layer of natural wool sourced from sheep in thePacific Northwest. It provides a plush sleeping surface while also acting as a natural chemical-free fire retardant.

Wool is also great at wicking away moisture, ensuring you don’t get all stuffy and sweaty on warm nights.

Smell/Off-gassing

Spindle Latex Mattress

It’s normal for natural latex to have a faint smell. It’s completely safe.

The Spindle mattress uses organic cotton, Okeo-Tex certified latex and 100% pure natural wool. So there are no VOCs or any toxic chemicals to worry about.

Spindle recommends letting the mattress breath for a few hours before sleeping on it. Leaving the fan and window open will help dissipate the smell faster.

Sleeping Experience

Spindle Latex Mattress

Latex generally feels more rigid and more responsive than memory foam. Even the softest Spindle mattress has a certain bounce to it you can’t get with memory foam.

This kind of upport is great for back and stomach sleepers. If you are a side sleeper, then make sure you select the soft or medium Spindle to get maximum contouring.

Remember you can modify your sleeping experience by interchanging the layers. Just call the company, and you can work together until the mattress feels perfect.

↑ Table of Contents

Firmness

Four firmness options are available from soft to extra firm.

The ideal option for most people is medium.

If you are a side sleeper or love sinking into your mattress, then choose the soft option.

If you sleep on your stomach or prefer floating on your mattress, then choose firm or extra firm.

Sinkage

Spindle Latex Mattress

Sinkage will depend on the firmness level you choose. But it’s generally the same as other latex foam mattresses.

Motion Transfer

Motion transfer is minimal, which will insulate you if your partner tends to be fidgety at night.

Hot/Cold Issues

Because the Spindle is made completely of latex foam, there are no heating issues at all regardless of firmness configuration.

This mattress stays cool even in the warmest weather.

It also doesn’t get too cold thanks to the wool batting under the cover which retains just enough heat to keep you cozy.

If you prefer the cooling nature and responsiveness of natural latex foam but are unsure of what firmness you might need (or want the freedom to adjust it later), then the Spindle mattress is a perfect choice.  It is also one of the least expensive latex mattresses you can buy online.
