Intellibed Mattress Review
Summary
Three luxury hybrid mattresses with a matrix gel material on top that provides a unique “give”, similar to the Purple mattress.
Great Choice for: Luxury shoppers who want a uniquely adaptive top layer.
Avoid if: You are looking for a budget mattress. These are NOT cheap.
Price: $2,699 – $6,399
If you’ve read our Purple mattress review, then you know how unique that mattress is. It uses a special type of polymer with a grid-like design. The grid walls collapse or remain upright depending on the amount of pressure on them.
Well, that is the same kind of technology used in the Intellibed Legacy Collection series of luxury mattresses.
Intellibed describes these as “100% soft + 100% firm”. Depending on your sleeping position and body weight, the mattress will adjust itself to feel perfect.
In this review, I’m going to walk you through three mattresses in their least-expensive Legacy Collection: the Azure, Sapphire, and Indigo.
If you want something even more luxurious, they also sell Signature Collection and Limited Collection series beds that start at well over $6,000 for a Queen.

About Intellibed
Intellibed was founded in 2000 and has since become one of the best-known luxury mattress makers.
Their latest advanced mattresses, based on their proprietary Gel Matrix technology, provide customized comfort regardless of sleeping position and body physique.
Social Impact
Intellibed manufactures all their Gel Matrix mattresses in the United States (in Salt Lake, Utah to be specific). This results in better quality mattresses that are safe for users as well as the environment and creates quality local jobs.
Purchase Process
Visit Intellibed’s official website to order a Gel Matrix mattress.
Go to their Legacy collection page to select your preferred mattress.
As I mentioned, there are three. Azure is the cheapest while Indigo is their most expensive.
All use the same materials and have the same number of layers. The differences are mostly in how the mattress feels.
The more expensive a mattress, the more luxurious it sleeps. The pricier Sapphire and Indigo add advanced motion control and extra body support.
Otherwise, these are all hybrid mattresses consisting of a Gel Matrix layer, a latex foam layer and a spring base.
Select your preferred mattress to go to the main product page.
Once there, select your size. All standard sizes from twin to California King are available for all Nuvea mattresses except Indigo which doesn’t have the twin and full sizes.
You can also order a split king or Cal king by calling Intellibed directly.
Next, choose whether to add a frame/adjustable base, box spring and mattress protector to your order. Definitely buy that mattress protector, because you must buy it to get a warranty and enjoy the 60-day trial period.
You can also choose whether to have your existing mattress removed for a $99 fee.
Pay for your order via credit card or apply for special financing. No interest is charged if you are approved to spread payments over 6, 9 or 12 months.
The mattress will be delivered to your home in about 14 days. They will set it up for you and, if you’d paid for the removal service, take away your old mattress for recycling.

60-Night Trial
Intellibed offers a 60-night in-home trial period. But you have to buy and use a mattress protector to be eligible for the trial period.
As with most online mattresses, Intellibed requires a 30-night minimum usage period. If you decide to return the mattress before 30 nights are over, you’ll have to pay for return shipping. Otherwise, there are no return fees charged.
You can also request a mattress exchange, but you’ll be responsible for shipping the new mattress as well as the upgrade fee.
20-Year Warranty
All three mattresses are covered by an outstanding 20-year non-prorated warranty. Remember you have to buy a mattress protector when ordering the mattress and use it for the warranty to remain valid.
Shipping
Intellibed ships to all states in the US including Alaska and Hawaii. Shipping is NOT free.
Shipping costs will depend on your location and are obviously higher for areas outside the contiguous US.
The delivery fee starts at around $269 per order, which is high compared to other online mattresses.
Delivery and Setup
Intellibed works with Manna to deliver their mattresses with white glove delivery standard. The costs are included in the shipping fee, so you don’t have to pay anything extra.
They will deliver the mattress to your home, unbox it and set it up for you.
If you order a frame, they will set that up too.
They can also take away your old mattress if you paid for the mattress removal service.
Foundation & Frame
What type of bed frame/support doIntellibed mattresses require?
A frame that is sturdy, flat and in good condition.
These are heavy mattresses, and you run the risk of voiding your warranty if you don’t use the right frame. I recommend buying their frame, adjustable base or box spring when you order the mattress.
The warranty specifically states that Queen and King size mattresses need frames with center support.
Do Intellibed mattresses work on an adjustable bed?
Yes, they do.
Care and Cleaning
Is a mattress protector needed for Intellibed Mattresses?
Yes. In fact, you should never use the mattress without a protector.
Do you need to rotate Intellibed mattresses?
Yes. The company recommends rotating the mattress every month for the first six months. Afterward, you need to rotate the mattress once every six months.
Aesthetics and Styling
All three Nuvea mattresses have a simple two-tone design expect the Indigo which has three different colors.
Overall, they have a minimalist design that understates their luxury sleeping experience.
Construction
Each of the three mattresses has a slightly different configuration. But they all have three sections: a top comfort Gel Matrix layer, a transition foam layer for support and comfort and a core support layer of springs.
Comfort section
All three mattresses have a gel matrix top layer. This layer consists of a unique gel polymer with a 3D checkerboard design. It looks like a waffle.
The ‘waffle’ buckles when a certain amount of pressure is applied. So for example, it might collapse under your hips or shoulders because they press more into the mattress. But it stays flat where there is less pressure like your back or legs.
This allows the mattress to provide customized comfort. It responds to your specific comfort needs, providing pressure relief and support where you need them most.
One of the biggest advantages of gel matrix is its durability. It can last for up to 30 years with just a little permanent depression.
Each mattress has a single layer of gel matrix at the top except the Numea Indigo which has two layers.
Comfort/Support Section
The second section of the Intellibed mattresses provides a combination of contouring, pressure relief, and compression support.
The cheapest mattress, the Azure, uses high-density polyfoam in this layer. The Sapphire and Indigo use Talalay latex. Sapphire has only one layer of Talalay latex while Indigo has 2.
Core Section/Base
All three mattresses have an innerspring base through its slightly different in each.
The cheapest model, the Azure, has connected springs similar to those of traditional spring mattresses. While connected springs are durable and fairly good at contouring, they don’t provide the best motion control.
The Sapphire and Indigo models have pocketed springs. In the Indigo mattress, however, the pocketed springs are zoned according to the body’s pressure points. This provides excellent contouring and motion control.
Mattress Cover
All three models are draped in a luxury quilted cover. It’s breathable and soft to the touch. The quilting adds a nice plush feeling to the mattress.
Beneath the cover, there is a silica-based fire sock with no harmful fire retardant chemicals.
Smell/Off-gassing
As long as a mattress contains synthetic foam, there’s going to be a slight ‘fresh foam’ smell. It’s like a new car smell.
It’s harmless and should dissipate in a few hours. You can help it off-gas quicker by leaving it uncovered in a well-ventilated room for 1 or 2 days.
Sleeping Experience
The Intellibed mattresses are some of the most comfortable and luxurious mattresses you’ll ever sleep on.
The gel matrix layer is worth the hype. It molds perfectly to your body, supporting you where you need alignment and hugging you where you need pressure relief.
The mattress feels highly responsive thanks to the latex and spring layers. But at the same time, it also feels plush and comfortable because of the quilted cover and gel matrix layer.
No matter how much you weigh or what position you sleep in, you are going to sleep comfortably in any of the three mattresses.
Firmness
It’s hard to describe the specific firmness of the Intellibed mattresses because they are designed to offer customized comfort.
Depending on body physique and sleeping position, one person may say the mattress is soft while another feels it as firmer.
It is a medium firm mattress but with a wide-ranging firmness. I’d say it rangesbetween4 and seven on a scale of increasing firmness.
Sinkage
As with firmness, sinkage will depend on your body weight and sleeping position. The waffle-like top layer responds to the amount of pressure on it.
If you sleep on your side, it will sink more especially under your hip and shoulder. If you sleep on your back, there will be more sinkage under your butt but less sinkage under your back. For heavier sleepers, there will be more overall sinkage because of the extra pressure.
Motion Transfer
There is very little motion transfer in all mattresses, but the Indigo performs best in motion control. It uses body-zoned pocketed coils.
Sapphire has just pocketed coils while Azure uses connected springs which tend to transfer motion more.
If you want a mattress with almost zero motion transfer, buy the Indigo.
Hot/Cold Issues
I’ve not heard of any temperature control issues with these mattresses. The gel matrix layer is not just good in support and contouring; it also allows excess body heat and moisture to dissipate away from the mattress.
The latex and innerspring are a big help too in keeping the mattress cool even on the warmest nights.
Pros and Cons
Pros
- Each mattress provides customized comfort and firmness, meaning you don’t have to worry about buying the wrong mattress.
- Good support.
- Highly responsive.
- Long warranty coverage.
Cons
- Shorter trial period than most online mattresses.

This Mattress is Perfect For You If…
- You want the most luxurious bed you can get and are willing to pay more for it.
- You’ve never found the perfect mattress.
- You don’t want to buy another mattress for at least two decades.
Conclusion
Intellibed mattresses are expensive, but it’s easy to see why. They provide customized support and comfort that few other mattresses can match. That’s not to mention that you probably won’t need to buy any other mattress in the next 20-30 years.
