Looking for a bamboo mattress topper or pad to soften your firm mattress and help you sleep cooler?

You’ve come to the right place.

Bamboo mattress toppers and pads have two big benefits.

One, they make a too-firm mattress softer, especially on your back, hips, and shoulders. Two, they provide a cooler sleeping experience for hot sleepers and memory foam mattress owners.

Bamboo toppers come in four varieties.

  • Bamboo charcoal-infused mattress toppers. These are usually memory foam toppers infused with bamboo charcoal. Ideal for those who want the memory foam feel but without the heat retention of memory foam.
  • Memory foam toppers with a bamboo cover. Ideal for those who want the classic memory foam feel with moderate cooling.
  • Fiber-filled pads with a mixture of synthetic fibers and bamboo rayon fibers. These are the best bamboo toppers for those looking to cool their mattress. Bamboo pads are also great for those who want to moderately soften their mattress without getting a pad that they’ll sink into.
  • Fiber-filled mattress pads with a bamboo rayon cover. These types of mattress pads are soft and plush but don’t provide the same cooling performance as a bamboo-filled mattress pad. Ideal for sleepers who need moderate cooling.

What’s In This Buying Guide?

In this buying guide, we recommend the best bamboo mattress pads and toppers. We’ve picked products in all four categories above so you can choose the best one for your needs.

We’ll also explain the benefits of a bamboo topper and what to look for when shopping for one.

Benefits of Bamboo Mattress Toppers

bamboo mattress topper

Softness/Comfort

Many people describe sleeping on a bamboo mattress pad, as sleeping on a cloud. The combination of bamboo and polyester or cotton microfiber makes for an ultra-soft and plush sleeping surface.

Because bamboo pads are thin, you don’t have to worry about sinking into them. You still get good support and spinal alignment with just the right amount of softness to relieve pressure on your back, shoulders, and hips.

If you want to sink a bit more into your bed (better pressure relief for side sleepers), get a memory foam topper with bamboo charcoal or a bamboo cover.

You get the deep body hug of memory foam and the cooling benefits of bamboo.

Cooling and Breathability

Bamboo bedding – whether sheets, pillows, or comforters – is famous for its excellent cooling performance.

Bamboo mattress pads and toppers are the same. Their high breathability makes them great for hot sleepers, especially if you sleep on a memory foam mattress.

For the best cooling performance, get a bamboo pad, not a topper. A pad contains more bamboo rayon fibers, which improves cooling. It also doesn’t contain heat-retaining memory foam.

A bamboo pad is also the best option for those who experience night sweats. The cooling action of bamboo helps you sweat less. The little sweat you produce quickly evaporates thanks to the breathable pad.

Hypoallergenic

Bamboo rayon is naturally hypoallergenic, making bamboo mattress pads and toppers ideal for sleepers with allergies or asthma.

Bamboo also has some antibacterial properties, which help keep your mattress more hygienic and smelling fresh.

Durable

Synthetic microfiber pads are comfy and cloudy, but they don’t last long. They quickly flatten, losing their plushness after just a few months.

Natural fibers such as those made from bamboo rayon are more durable. A topper containing both bamboo fibers and microfibers will retain its soft feel for longer.

Best Bamboo Mattress Pads and Toppers: Reviews

1. Best Bamboo Memory Foam: LUCID 3 Inch Bamboo Charcoal Memory Foam Mattress Topper

bamboo mattress topper

The Lucid 3” memory foam topper is infused with bamboo charcoal to provide temperature regulation, absorb moisture, and reduce odors.

We recommend it to anyone who wants to add pressure relief and contouring to their firm mattress, while also enjoying the cooling benefits of bamboo.

Pros

  • Excellent pressure relief.
  • Also provides some support.
  • Bamboo charcoal and ventilated design help with cooling.
  • Bamboo charcoal keeps it smelling fresh.

Cons

  • Not ideal for very hot sleepers.
  • Doesn't come with a cover.

Our Review

The Lucid 3” topper has a medium-firm feel that’s suitable for most types of sleepers. The memory foam contours around your body to relieve pressure points, while also providing firm support.

This balance of support and pressure relief makes the Lucid bamboo topper good for people with back pain.

It also makes it a good choice for both firm and soft mattresses. You can use the Lucid topper to soften a very firm mattress or add support to a soft mattress.

Bamboo charcoal infused into the memory foam helps with cooling, moisture, and odor.

Together with the ventilated design of the topper, the bamboo charcoal helps dissipate body heat away from the mattress.

It also absorbs odors to keep your bed smelling fresh, and absorbs moisture to keep the bed dry and bacteria-free.

Issues & Limitations

While the bamboo charcoal and holes in the topper do help somewhat with cooling, this is still a memory foam topper. It can feel a bit too warm if you tend to sleep extra-hot or you are sensitive to heat.

For very hot and heat-sensitive sleepers, we recommend a bamboo mattress pad or a latex topper.

Another issue with the Lucid 3” topper is that it doesn't come with a cover. We highly recommend one to protect the topper from dirt and stains.

Get a bamboo cover like this one by Subrtex to improve the topper’s cooling ability.

Bottom Line

The Lucid 3” bamboo charcoal memory foam topper is a good choice for anyone looking for a bamboo memory foam mattress topper that offers pressure relief and support.

Avoid it if you are a very hot sleeper.

2. Best for Hot Sleepers: Zen Bamboo Ultra Soft Fitted Bamboo Mattress Pad

Zen Bamboo Ultra Soft Fitted Bamboo Mattress Pad

If you sleep hot, the Zen ultra-soft fitted bamboo mattress pad is a great choice. The polyester filling traps less heat than memory foam, and the bamboo cover sleeps cooler than cotton.

Pros

  • Excellent cooling performance.
  • Soft without compromising support.
  • Acts as a mattress protector (it’s not waterproof though).
  • Machine washable.

Cons

  • Not waterproof.
  • Not ideal for those looking for a thick mattress pad or topper.

Our Review

For the price, we love the quality and feel of the Zen Bamboo mattress pad. It’s not as thick or plush as other mattress toppers, so you don’t exactly get that ‘sleeping on a cloud’ feel.

But that’s not what the Zen Bamboo mattress pad is designed for. It’s ideal for adding a soft touch to a firm mattress without making it overly plush.

If you don’t want a topper that you’ll sink into, the Zen mattress pad is perfect.

Where the Zen mattress pad shines is its cooling performance. It has a mixed material filling consisting of 40% bamboo rayon and 60% microfiber.

The bamboo rayon greatly improves breathability, cooling, and moisture-wicking.

If you are a hot sleeper, live in a warm climate like Florida, or sleep on a hot memory foam mattress, the Zen bamboo topper can help.

The manufacturer doesn’t specify what material the cover fabric is, but it’s likely 100% polyester or a mixture of polyester and bamboo rayon.

Either way, it feels soft and breathable.

The seller says you can use the Zen mattress pad as a mattress protector to prevent stains and allergens from reaching the mattress. Keep in mind however that the pad is not waterproof.

If it gets dirty, the Zen bamboo mattress is machine washable on cold. You can also tumble dry it on low heat.

For easy fitting on a mattress, the pad has an elastic band around the edges that’s big enough to fit mattresses up to 18” high. The large fit is especially ideal for pillow-top mattresses.

Issues & Limitations

If you are looking for a thicker mattress topper that you can sink into, this is not it. It only provides a moderate level of softness.

If you are a side sleeper looking for a mattress topper with deep pressure relief, try one of the memory foam toppers in this buying guide.

Bottom Line

The Zen bamboo mattress pad is a great choice for hot sleepers looking for a plush mattress pad.

It’s also one of the best bargains we found, making it a good choice for shoppers on a budget.

If you are looking for a budget upgrade for your bed, you’ll love the Zen mattress pad.

3. Best for Back Pain: ExceptionalSheets Bamboo Mattress Pad with Fitted Skirt

ExceptionalSheets Queen Mattress Pad with Fitted Skirt - Cooling Mattress Pad with Extra Plush Rayon from Bamboo Topper - Hypoallergenic Bamboo Mattress Pad - Made in The USA, Queen

If you have back pain that you suspect is being caused or worsened by your too-firm mattress, try the ExceptionalSheets bamboo mattress pad.

The bamboo mattress pad adds just the right amount of softness to your mattress to relieve pressure on your back.

Pros

  • Improves pressure relief – great for side sleepers and those with back pain.
  • Cool and breathable bamboo cover.
  • Hypoallergenic.
  • Fits most mattresses.

Cons

  • Not ideal for hot sleepers.

Our Review

The ExceptionalSheets mattress pad is one of the most expensive toppers on our list. But it provides a softer, more luxurious experience compared to other bamboo mattress pads.

The Revoloft fiberfill gives it a plusher and fluffier feel that’s great for side sleepers and anyone with back pain. It can make a too-firm mattress more comfortable.

If you want a softer mattress but don’t want to sink into a memory foam topper, the ExceptionalSheets mattress pad is a great alternative. You get just the right amount of body hug without affecting support or spinal alignment.

The fiberfill is hypoallergenic. Unlike down, it is unlikely to cause any allergic reaction or worsen asthma symptoms.

The bamboo cover is hypoallergenic as well. It also helps with cooling, though it doesn’t match the cooling performance of the Zen bamboo mattress pad.

The ExceptionalSheets mattress pad comes with a stretchy skirt that easily fits most mattresses, including extra-tall mattresses (up to 18” thick). Once you tuck it under the mattress, it stays put no matter how much you turn and toss.

As for cleaning, the ExceptionalSheets mattress pad is machine washable.

Issues & Limitations

The bamboo cover helps a bit with cooling, but it’s no match for having bamboo fiber in the mattress pad.

While most people will sleep cool on the ExceptionalSheets mattress pad, hot sleepers may find it a tad too warm.

Bottom Line

The ExceptionalSheets bamboo mattress pad is a great choice for anyone looking to soften their mattress and relieve back pain.

Avoid it if your back pain is caused by a too-soft mattress. Get a firm mattress topper instead.

4. Best For Support and Pressure Relief: Sleepmax Memory Foam Mattress Topper With Bamboo Charcoal

bamboo mattress pad

If you want a bamboo mattress topper that’s neither too soft nor too firm, we recommend the Sleepmax memory foam mattress topper.

The topper has two layers that combine to relieve pressure points as well as provide support.

Pros

  • Good pressure relief and support.
  • Helps with body aches and pains.
  • Three size options (2”, 3” and 4”).
  • Infused with bamboo and cooling gel.
  • Great for heavier sleepers.

Cons

  • Doesn't come with a cover.

Our Review

Most memory foam toppers tend to be too soft. This is okay if you want to sink into your mattress.

But if you are looking for a balance between sleeping on a cloud and firm support, the Sleepmax mattress topper is the best choice.

The Sleepmax topper has a medium-firm feel. It’s neither too soft nor too firm. This is thanks to a 2-layer design with soft bamboo charcoal memory foam on top and high-density polyfoam at the bottom.

The Sleepmax mattress topper improves sleeping posture, spinal alignment, and pressure relief. It helps with back pain, hip pain and other joint aches.

The medium-firm feel is comfortable for both back and side sleepers.

Most customers got the Sleepmax memory foam topper to soften a too-firm mattress, but you can also use it to add support to a too-soft mattress.

The Sleepmax memory foam topper is available in three sizes: 2”, 3” and 4”.

The 3 and 4 inch options are the best for most people.

The 4” topper is especially suitable for heavier sleepers who need more support and deeper pressure relief. It hugs your body without bottoming out.

For cooling, the Sleepmax topper contains bamboo charcoal and gel pellets in the memory foam layer. The memory foam is also ventilated with holes to improve heat dissipation.

It can still feel a bit too warm if you are sensitive to heat or your body produces a lot of heat, but most users find it cool.

Issues & Limitations

When ordering the Sleepmax bamboo memory foam topper, also order a separate cover since the topper doesn't come with one.

Get a bamboo or cotton cover to enjoy additional cooling.

Bottom Line

The Sleepmax memory foam mattress topper is a great choice for anyone shopping for a bamboo topper that offers both support and pressure relief.

It’s for those who want to sleep on a cloud without sinking into the topper.

Avoid it if you already have a supportive mattress and only want a bit of pressure relief. Get a bamboo fiberfill mattress pad instead.

5. Best Plush Bamboo Mattress Pad: Cheer Collection Soft and Plush Bamboo Fitted Mattress Topper

Cheer Collection Queen Cool Touch Bamboo Mattress Topper Pad, Bed Topper with Ultra Plush Fitted Eco Friendly Hypoallergenic Fill Pillow Top

If you want a plush and luxurious mattress pad, we recommend this one from Cheer Collection. It’s a bit pricey for a mattress pad, but the sleeping experience beats what you get with thin budget mattress pads.

Pros

  • Soft and plush – provides excellent pressure relief for side sleepers and people with back pain.
  • Unlike a memory foam topper, it doesn’t affect mattress support.
  • Sleeps cool.
  • Hypoallergenic.
  • Deep elastic pockets for thick mattresses.

Cons

  • Be careful – the sides rip easily when pulling the pad over the mattress.

Our Review

If you want a plush topper without the pillowy feel of memory foam toppers, the Cheer Collection bamboo mattress pad is a good choice.

It is softer and plusher than cheaper mattress pads, but you won’t sink into it. It just wraps around your body, relieving pressure on your back, hips, and shoulders.

It’s a good addition to the mattress for side sleepers who feel their mattress is a bit too hard on their hips and shoulders.

It is also a good choice for folks with back pain. It eliminates pressure on your back while ensuring you still get optimal lumbar support from your mattress.

The Cheer Collection does not have any bamboo fiber inside. The filling is hollow fiber, which gives the pad it’s soft and plush feel.

The bamboo is on the cover fabric. It makes the cover more breathable, better at wicking sweat, and softer.

The bamboo is mixed with polyester for added durability.

The Cheer Collection pad comes with an elastic skirt that fits under mattresses as thick as 18”. Even if you have a thick pillow top mattress, this pad will fit. It’s also deep enough if you have a conventional topper on top of your mattress.

The Cheer Collection pad is machine washable in cold or warm water. Tumble dry it on low heat.

Issues & Limitations

Overall cooling performance is good, not great. Most people will find it cool. But hot sleepers should consider a mattress pad with bamboo fiber filling.

Another issue is the fabric quality of the skirt. It’s fairly thin and easily rips if you are not careful when stretching it over the mattress.

Bottom Line

Though more expensive than other mattress pads, the Cheer Collection bamboo mattress pad is still an affordable luxury upgrade for your mattress. It beats buying a new luxury mattress.

6. Best Organic Latex Bamboo Mattress Topper: OrganicTextiles 3” Inch With Bamboo Cover

cooling bamboo mattress topper

The OrganicTextiles organic latex mattress topper is a good alternative if you are not a big fan of memory foam or microfiber toppers.

The OrganicTextiles topper is all-natural, including the bamboo cover.

Pros

  • Eco-friendly.
  • Medium feel provides both support and pressure relief.
  • Great for hot sleepers.
  • Cool & breathable bamboo cover.

Cons

  • The cover is not removable.
  • Pricey.

Our Review

Natural latex offers good support and adds a nice bounce to your bed.

The OrganicTextiles organic latex topper firms up a too-soft mattress and makes it more responsive. This improves support and spinal alignment and can help with back pain caused by a poor sleeping posture.

The added bounciness can also make your soft mattress better for sex.

The OrganicTextiles latex topper has an ILD of 28, meaning it has a medium feel. You get plenty of support, and it also relieves pressure points.

It doesn't hug you as deeply as memory foam, so don't worry that you’ll sink into it.

If you are a hot sleeper or you get hot flashes at night, get the OrganicTextiles latex topper.

Organic latex sleeps cool and doesn't trap any heat. The natural bamboo cover on top provides additional cooling and moisture-wicking.

Even if you sleep really hot, the OrganicTextiles topper will make your bed cooler.

The cover of the OrganicTextiles topper consists of 51% bamboo and 49% Tencel.

Both of these are highly breathable fabrics. The cover feels cooler and more breathable compared to the usual polyester + bamboo topper covers.

Issues & Limitations

If you are shopping for a budget topper, the OrganicTextiles latex topper is probably not what you are looking for.

Organic latex toppers are expensive.

Something else to keep in mind is that the bamboo cover on the OrganicTextiles latex topper is not removable, so you cannot wash it.

You can get an additional washable cover for the topper, or spot clean the bamboo cover when it gets dirty or stained.

Bottom Line

The OrganicTextiles organic latex mattress topper is a great choice for anyone shopping for an eco-friendly bamboo mattress topper.

It’s also the best bamboo topper for extra-hot and heat-sensitive sleepers.

Avoid it if you are shopping for a budget mattress pad or topper. A memory foam or microfiber bamboo topper is way cheaper.

7. Best Budget: Elegant Comfort Premium Bamboo Mattress Pad

Elegant Comfort Bamboo-Mattress-PAD-Twin Premium Pad-Overfilled Extra Plush Topper Hypoallergenic Breathable Cool Flow Technology, 16

The Elegant Comfort bamboo mattress pad is our top value pick. It’s cheaper than most bamboo toppers but delivers what most people are looking for – a softer mattress that sleeps cool.

Pros

  • Good value for money.
  • Soft pressure relief.
  • Cool and breathable bamboo cover.
  • A stretchy skirt fits most mattresses.

Cons

  • Not ideal for those looking for a topper with more cushioning.

Our Review

If you don’t like the Zen Bamboo mattress pad, the Elegant Comfort pad is another pocket-friendly option.

It has hollow fiber filling, which has close to the plushness of down. The cover fabric is a mixture of bamboo (40%) and polyester (60%).

Bamboo rayon in the cover helps with cooling and moisture-wicking. It also gives the cover a softer texture.

The Elegant Comfort mattress pad is not quite as fluffy as other mattress pads, so we recommend it only for those looking for a moderately soft topper or pad.

It’s great for relieving back pain and can help side sleepers sleep more comfortably on a firm mattress.

The pad is easy to fit onto the mattress. The elastic skirt easily stretches down to cover mattresses up to 16” thick.

As for cleaning, the Elegant Comfort mattress pad is machine washable in cold water. To prevent shrinking, tumble-dry it on low heat or air-dry it.

Issues & Limitations

If you are looking for an extra-plush mattress topper, this is not it. Many customers say that it could use a bit more fill for extra cushioning.

If your mattress is very firm, the Elegant Comfort mattress pad may not make a big difference. It’s best for slightly softening a medium-firm mattress.

Bottom Line

Don’t expect your mattress to turn into a luxury 5-star hotel mattress. But even the moderate improvement in pressure relief and cushioning from the Elegant Comfort mattress pad can greatly improve your sleep quality.

8. Best Waterproof Bamboo Mattress Protector: Purshcle Bamboo Waterproof Mattress Protector

bamboo mattress pad

If you want a 2-in-1 bamboo mattress pad and protector, get the Purshcle bamboo waterproof mattress protector.

Unlike most bamboo mattress pads, this one is 100% waterproof.

Pros

  • Waterproof.
  • Adds a soft touch to the mattress.
  • Keeps your bed cooler.
  • Noiseless.
  • Deep pocket.

Cons

  • Not suitable for those looking for a thick mattress pad or topper.

Our Review

Many bamboo mattress pads also double up as mattress covers or protectors. The problem is that most of them are not waterproof.

So while they will keep out dust, dirt and allergens from settling on your mattress, they don't protect against liquids.

The Purshcle bamboo mattress protector, in contrast, combines the cooling properties of bamboo with the peace of mind of a waterproof mattress protector.

The waterproof protection comes from a noiseless Thermo Polyurethane (TPU) backing. TPU is safer, more eco-friendly, softer and quieter than the more commonly used PVC backing in many mattress protectors.

On top of the backing is a soft fabric consisting of polyester and bamboo. This blend feels a lot cooler and wicks away sweat better than the polyester-only surface on most mattress protectors.

The Purshcle bamboo mattress protector is machine washable on a cold setting and a gentle cycle. Tumble dry on low.

It’s available in all the standard sizes plus an RV short Queen size for RV and camper mattresses.

Each size comes with an 18” deep skirt that fits onto mattresses between 8 and 21 inches thick.

Issues & Limitations

If you are shopping for a thick and plush bamboo mattress topper or pad, this is not it. The Purshcle mattress protector is just a thin (but soft) pad.

It adds a soft touch to your mattress, but not much to make a difference in terms of pressure relief.

Where the Purshcle mattress protector excels is keeping liquids and stains off your mattress and helping you sleep cooler.

Bottom Line

The Purshcle mattress protector is a great choice for anyone shopping for a waterproof bamboo mattress pad.

Avoid it if you are looking for something thicker and plusher.

9. Best Firm Bamboo Mattress Topper: BedStory Fusion Memory Foam Mattress Topper

Remove term: best firm mattress topper best firm mattress topper

Most bamboo mattress toppers are designed to soften a firm mattress. If you want the opposite – to firm up a soft mattress – we recommend the BedStory fusion memory foam mattress topper.

It’s 2-sided, so you can choose to sleep on the firm or extra-firm side.

Pros

  • Adds support to a too-soft mattress.
  • Two firmness options in one mattress topper.
  • Contains copper, gel and bamboo charcoal for freshness and cooling.
  • Breathable bamboo cover.

Cons

  • Not ideal for firm mattresses and side sleepers.

Our Review

The BedStory mattress topper contains bamboo both inside and outside.

The memory foam contains bamboo charcoal along with cooling gel, copper and green tea. All that stuff helps keep the mattress topper cool, dry and fresh.

The BedStory mattress topper is also wrapped in a bamboo cover, which provides additional cooling and moisture wicking.

This is one of the best cooling memory foam bamboo mattress toppers you’ll find.

As for comfort, the BedStory mattress topper is designed for mattresses that feel too soft. It’s especially ideal for back, stomach and heavy sleepers who feel their mattress could use more support.

The BedStory topper consists of a memory foam layer on top and a firmer polyfoam layer at the bottom. You can flip the topper over to experience different levels of firmness.

The memory foam side has a firm feel, while the polyfoam side has an extra-firm feel.

You can get the BedStory mattress topper in a 3” or 4” size. The 4-incher provides more support and pressure relief for heavier sleepers.

Issues & Limitations

If your problem is that your mattress is too firm, the BedStory topper is not for you. It’s designed only for soft mattresses.

We also don't recommend it for most side sleepers. You risk experiencing pressure points on your shoulders and hips.

If you are a side sleeper and want to add support to your mattress, try the Sleepmax or Novilla mattress topper instead. Both offer a good balance between pressure relief and support.

Bottom Line

The BedStory fusion memory foam mattress topper is a great choice for anyone looking for a firm or extra-firm bamboo mattress topper for their too-soft mattress.

Avoid it if you are looking for a soft, pressure-relieving mattress topper.

10. Best for an Old or Sagging Mattress: Novilla 4 Inch Memory Foam Mattress Topper

bamboo mattress pad

A mattress topper won’t completely revive your worn out years old mattress. But the Novilla 4” memory foam topper can save you the cost of a new mattress for a while longer. The extra-thick topper can make a sagging or old mattress feel like new.

Pros

  • Great for old and sagging mattresses.
  • Excellent support and pressure relief.
  • Infused with bamboo charcoal + bamboo cover.
  • Sleeps cool.

Cons

  • Sleeps around a bit, despite the elastic straps.

Our Review

With a thickness of 4 inches, the Novilla mattress topper is able to hide the flaws and age of your mattress. It even smooths over any sagging.

It makes an old mattress feel almost like new. It’s so good that you can even use it on its own as a mattress in emergencies. Place it on the floor, on the sofa or on a Tatami mat.

The Novilla mattress topper has two layers: a 1.5” top layer of gel memory foam and a 2.5” base layer of bamboo charcoal support foam.

This combination creates the perfect medium-firm feel that’s comfortable for most kinds of sleepers. The memory foam hugs your body and relieves pressure points while the base polyfoam layer provides support to keep you from sinking in.

The bamboo charcoal and the gel infused onto the foam layers help with cooling.

The Novilla mattress topper is wrapped in a bamboo cover that provides extra cooling power.

Issues & Limitations

The Novilla mattress topper comes with four elastic corner straps to secure it to the mattress. But many customers say they don't stop the topper from slipping around.

It doesn't slip too much, but you’ll need to push it back into place every few days. To prevent this, buy a non-slip mattress grip pad. Place it between your mattress and the Novilla mattress topper.

Bottom Line

The Novilla mattress topper is a great choice for anyone looking for a topper that can rejuvenate their old or sagging mattress.

Avoid it if your mattress is still in good condition. A 2” or 3” mattress pad will do.

Bamboo Mattress Toppers Buying Guide

What Are Bamboo Mattress Toppers/Pads?

Bamboo mattress toppers and pads incorporate bamboo in the foam, filling or cover.

For instance, bamboo memory foam toppers typically contain bamboo charcoal infused into the memory foam.

Bamboo microfiber toppers have bamboo fibers mixed with polyester fibers or have a blended bamboo and polyester cover.

Bamboo latex toppers have a bamboo cover.

Bamboo mattress toppers are ideal if you want to adjust the feel of your mattress and make it cooler.

In addition to getting a bamboo mattress topper or pad, also consider getting bamboo sheets to improve temperature regulation and sweat absorption.

And if you want the best cooling performance, we recommend wool mattress toppers over bamboo toppers. Wool has exceptional all-year temperature regulation that bamboo cannot match.

What to Look for in a Good Bamboo Mattress Topper

mattress toppers fitted skirt

Materials

It’s hard to find a 100% bamboo mattress topper. Most manufacturers mix different materials, with one of them being bamboo.

The best mattress pads use a bamboo and microfiber filling. Other mattress pads have microfiber filling and a bamboo cover.

Mattress toppers usually use bamboo only in the cover. The Lucid topper is one of the few to have a bamboo-infused topper.

It’s also important to check what kind of bamboo the topper or pad uses.

Most use bamboo rayon, which is super soft and has the great cooling performance. On the downside, the process of making bamboo rayon is not very eco-friendly.

Bamboo lyocell is an eco-friendlier material, but it’s expensive. So toppers and pads made with bamboo lyocell cost more.

Bamboo linen is another option. The manufacturing process is all-natural, and mattress pads made with bamboo linen have excellent temperature regulation. The two major downsides of bamboo linen are that it doesn’t feel as soft as bamboo lyocell and rayon, and it’s expensive.

Some mattress toppers have bamboo charcoal infused into the foam. The charcoal helps with moisture, humidity, and odor control.

Bamboo charcoal also improves the topper’s resistance to allergens and bacteria.

Pad vs. Topper

A pad feels more like a comforter. It’s thin with some fiber padding inside.

A mattress pad is a great choice if you don’t want a thick memory foam topper that you’ll sink into. The mattress pad makes the mattress softer without reducing support or making it feel like you are stuck in a swamp.

Some mattress pads double up as mattress covers or mattress protectors. If you want a bamboo mattress protector, get one that is waterproof.

A mattress topper, on the other hand, consists of foam, usually memory foam, instead of microfiber. It’s also thicker, with most toppers being two or three inches thick.

A topper is a great choice if you want to add more cushioning or support to your mattress. Memory foam is especially good for pressure relief.

Some bamboo mattress toppers combine memory foam and polyfoam to provide both pressure relief and support.

Mattress Fit

When it comes to mattress fit, there are two things to check: topper size and skirt depth.

Mattress toppers and pads come in standard mattress sizes ranging from twin to Cal King. Choose the size that corresponds to your mattress size.

Next, check that the mattress pad comes with a deep-enough elastic skirt that can fit under your mattress. Most mattress pads have deep elastic pockets or skirts that can fit mattresses up to 16-18 inches thick.

Note that mattress toppers typically don’t come with a skirt. But some have a non-slip bottom and elastic straps to keep the topper from shifting when you move.

If your topper keeps shifting, secure it to the mattress using a mattress cover.

You can also get mattress grip pads and place them between your mattress and the topper.

Cleaning and Care

best bamboo mattress toppers

If you are buying a mattress pad, check if it is machine washable.

Most mattress pads are machine washable. But to avoid damaging the bamboo rayon, you should wash it in cold water. Also, do not mix it with any other clothing items, especially those that contain zippers or buttons.

In any case, your washer will not have any spare room for anything else after you put the mattress pad in.

Most mattress pads can also be tumble-dried at a low heat setting.

If you are buying a mattress topper that has a cover, check if the cover is removable and washable.

To avoid too much shrinkage, wash the mattress pad in cold water, and tumble-dry it on low.

Do bamboo mattress toppers keep you cool?

Bamboo mattress toppers can make your bed cooler. How cool depends on how hot you sleep and the type of topper.

A memory foam topper infused with bamboo charcoal has limited cooling effect and is not ideal for very hot sleepers.

A microfiber mattress pad with a bamboo cover sleeps cooler, and a latex topper with a bamboo cover sleeps the coolest.

How long do bamboo mattress toppers and pads last?

How long a bamboo mattress topper lasts depends on the materials and quality of the topper.

Generally, memory foam and microfiber bamboo toppers and pads last between 3 and 5 years, while latex toppers with a bamboo cover can last for 10 years or more.
