Shopping for an eco-friendly mattress?

We recommend the Essentia organic mattress collection.

Essentia currently offers nine organic mattresses with varying firmness and comfort. They are all-natural and organic.

The signature material in the Essentia mattresses is natural memory foam.

Wait, natural memory foam? Is there anything like that?

There is. Essentia has created a latex-based memory foam that’s all-natural, a first in the mattress industry. We’ll explain more in our in-depth buying guide below.

Essentia mattresses are more expensive than most other organic mattresses online. Prices start at around $1,500 and reach over $6,000 for their premium models.

Are they worth the high price tag?

That’s what we’ll find out in this buying guide.

We’ll also look at how Essentia compares to our favorite organic foam mattress.

About Essentia

Essentia

Essentia launched in 2006 with the mission of creating an eco-friendly mattress with the same pressure-relieving performance as traditional memory foam.

The company came up with a formula for a natural memory foam that contours to your body like traditional Visco-elastic foam, but without off-gassing or heating that normal memory foam give.

Essentia currently has operations in the United States and Canada.

They sell their mattresses online on their official website and in physical stores.

What Materials Are Used in Essentia Mattresses?

Natural Memory Foam

All Essentia mattresses share the same materials.

The difference is in the thickness and materials used in the different layers, which results in varying firmness among the mattresses.

As we mentioned, all materials are natural or organic.

All Essentia beds carry GOTS and GOLS certifications. You can see all their tests and certifications on their website.

Here are the materials used in the Essentia mattresses – starting with the one you are probably most curious about.

Natural Memory Foam

Essentia’s natural memory foam may have the same plush feel like traditional memory foam, but that’s as far as the similarities go.

While normal memory foam is petroleum-based, Essentia’s formulation is all-natural. It’s a latex-based foam made from rubber tree sap and natural plant extracts.

This allows Essentia to create soft memory foam and contouring, but without the off-gassing and heat retention, you get from traditional memory foam.

Their memory foam also lasts much longer, roughly twice as long as normal memory foam.

So far, Essentia is the only company we know that claims to make natural memory foam. They manufacture their foam rather buying from memory foam manufacturers.

You may have come across other mattress manufacturers claiming their memory foam is eco-friendly, bio-based, or plant-based.

These foams are still petroleum-based, with only part of the petroleum ingredients replaced with plant oils and extracts.

They are better than full synthetic memory foam but still are no match for Essentia natural memory foam.

Organic Dunlop Latex

All Essentia mattresses contain organic Dunlop latex foam. It’s made from the same Hevea milk (rubber sap) that’s used to formulate their natural memory foam.

Because of its denser and firmer profile, Essentia mattresses use Dunlop latex for support.

Organic Cotton

All Essentia mattresses come with an organic cotton cover.

Essentia Mattresses Construction

Essentia mattress construction

Now that we know what materials Essentia uses in their mattresses, let’s look at how they are arranged in each mattress.

Essentia sells nine mattresses grouped into three categories:

  1. Lifestyle (the most affordable)
  2. Performance (best value), and
  3. Wholebody (premium offerings).

Essentia's Lifestyle Collection

This is their most affordable range. It includes the Tatami, Stratami, and Tatami Hybrid mattresses.

Here’s how each of these beds are constructed:.

Tatami:

  • 1” natural memory foam
  • 7” organic Dunlop latex

Stratami:

The only all-latex Essentia mattress.

  • 3” dome-shaped natural latex. The surface of this layer consists of a series of small domes that provide improved lumbar support and full body contouring.
  • 5” organic Dunlop latex

Tatami Hybrid:

The only hybrid Essentia mattress. Also, the only Essentia mattress with a height of more than 8”. It measures 10.5”.

  • 5” natural memory foam
  • 5” natural latex foam
  • 8” recycled steel coils
  • 5” cotton padding

Essentia's Performance Collection

This is their best value range.

Mattresses in the Performance collection are softer and sleep cooler (3 degrees cooler than your body temperature, according to Essentia).

Classic 8:

  • 2” natural memory foam
  • 6” organic Dunlop latex

Energie Opus:

  • 3” natural memory foam
  • 5” organic Dunlop latex

Eluxe:

  • 4” natural memory foam. It offers a deeper contour than the other mattresses in this collection.
  • 4” organic Dunlop latex

Essentia's Wholebody Collection

This is Essentia's most luxurious collection. It’s also their most expensive.

This collection focuses on deep body contouring using thicker memory foam, better body recovery/bounce, and improved temperature regulation.

According to Essentia, these mattresses maintain on average a temperature 7 degrees lower than your body temperature.

Mattresses in this collection have a molded, or contoured, design.

The top memory foam layer is molded to the top and sides of the other two layers. The mattress looks like one piece of foam, but from the inner side, there are multiple layers.

The molded design offers deeper contouring and better overall comfort.

Beausommet:

  • 2” molded natural memory foam
  • 1” natural memory foam
  • 5” Dunlop latex

Dormeuse:

  • 2” molded natural memory foam
  • 2” natural memory foam
  • 4” Dunlop latex

Dormeuse Fior:

  • 3” molded natural memory foam
  • 2” natural memory foam
  • 3” Dunlop latex

How Do Essentia Mattresses Feel? (Firmness & Comfort)

Essentia firmness & comfort

Essentia mattresses range between medium-soft (4/10) to firm (7/10). But most of their mattresses are medium-firm (6.5/10).

Please note: Mattress firmness is subjective. The mattress of your choice may feel slightly different than what’s indicated below, depending on your weight and sleeping position. Essentia offers a 120-day return period, so you don’t have to worry about being stuck with a too-firm or too-soft mattress.

Here’s a quick summary of what each Essentia mattress feels like and who it is ideal for.

Essentia Mattress Comfort Best For
Tatami Firm Back and heavier sleepers
Stratami Medium-firm Most types of sleepers except side sleepers
Tatami hybrid Medium-firm Most types of sleepers except side sleepers
Classic 8 Medium-firm Most types of sleepers except side sleepers
Energie Opus Medium Side, back, average weight, and lighter sleepers. Also ideal for back pain sufferers
Eluxe Medium-soft Side sleepers and people who weigh less than average
Beausommet Medium-firm Most types of sleepers except side sleepers
Dormeuse Medium-soft Side sleepers and people who weigh less than average
Dormeuse Fior Medium-soft Side sleepers and people who weigh less than average

Tatami Comfort & Firmness

Tatami essential mattress

Tatami is a firm Essentia mattress. It is the only firm mattress Essentia sells.

The firmness comes from a thinner layer of memory foam than any of the other mattresses – it is just 1” thick.

So there isn’t much give. When you lie on this mattress, you’ll quickly encounter the firmer Dunlop latex core beneath.

Tatami is ideal for stomach sleepers, heavier sleepers who need extra compression support, and anyone who prefers a firmer, more solid mattress.

Stratami Comfort & Firmness

Stratami mattress

Staratami is a medium-firm mattress. It’s also the only Essentia mattress to lack memory foam. It consists of only latex foam.

The softer feel comes from, the thicker 3” natural latex layer on top. It offers deeper contouring compared to Tatami.

The 5” Dunlop latex support core counters the softer top layer, resulting in an overall medium-firm mattress.

Stratami is ideal for most types of sleepers, including stomach, back, and combined sleepers.

It’s also ideal for heavier sleepers who need extra support. The all-latex construction is more supportive compared to a memory foam + latex foam construction.

But we don’t recommend it for side sleepers. It is a bit too firm to contour around your hips and shoulders adequately.

Tatami Hybrid Comfort & Firmness

Tatami hybrid mattress

Tatami Hybrid is a medium-firm mattress. It is the only innerspring mattress Essentia sells and the only mattress that measures more than 8” thick.

Tatami Hybrid has two soft comfort layers consisting of natural memory foam and natural latex. They provide instant pressure relief, wrapping your body in a plush hug.

Instead of Dunlop latex, the Tatami Hybrid mattress consists of an 8” innerspring core. It has the same firming up effect as Dunlop latex. The coils provide excellent deep compression support.

Tatami Hybrid is the best choice for heavier sleepers weighing more than 200lbs. It has very good support, including around the edges.

Classic 8 Comfort & Firmness

Classic 8 essentia mattress

Classic 8 is a medium-firm mattress. It was the original Essentia mattress, designed to meet the needs of most types of sleepers.

The thicker 2” natural memory foam layer enhances body contouring, allowing the mattress to conform better to your curves and joints.

The 6” Dunlop latex core provides deep compression support and keeps the mattress from sagging.

The Classic 8 mattress is ideal for most types of sleepers. It hits the sweet spot between firm support and soft pressure relief that most people find comfortable.

Energie Opus Comfort & Firmness

Energie Opus Comfort & Firmness

Energie Opus is a medium mattress. If you want a softer but not too soft Essentia mattress, it’s the best choice.

The added softness is because it has a thicker top layer. 3” of natural memory foam provides plenty of deep contouring.

The 5” Dunlop core balances it out to create an overall medium feel.

Like Classic 8, Energie Opus is ideal for most types of sleepers, including the back, stomach, and some side sleepers.

It’s also a great choice for people with back pain. It provides good lumbar support, pressure relief, and spinal alignment.

But we don’t recommend it for heavier sleepers as it can feel too soft and unsupportive.

Eluxe Comfort & Firmness

Eluxe Comfort & Firmness

Eluxe is a medium-soft mattress.

The comfort section is the same thickness as the support core. This makes the mattress significantly softer than the others, giving it a more luxurious feel.

Side sleepers will love the plushness of the Eluxe mattress. It contours to your curves, which ensures your shoulder and hip are not pressing against the mattress but rather, sinking into it.

People who weigh less than average are also likely to find the Eluxe mattress to be comfortable.

Because of the plusher feel, it doesn’t offer adequate support for heavier sleepers as well as back and stomach sleepers. Edge support is also less compared to medium-firm and firm Essentia mattresses.

Beausommet Comfort & Firmness

Beausommet

Beausommet is a medium-firm mattress.

The comfort section consists of 3” of natural memory foam. That, combined with the much firmer Dunlop latex core, results in an overall medium-firm feel.

Beausommet is ideal for most types of sleepers except side sleepers, for whom it would feel too firm.

Dormeuse Comfort & Firmness

Dormeuse

Dormeuse is a medium-soft mattress. It’s another good choice if you are looking for a luxury mattress.

The comfort and support sections have the same thickness – 4” apiece – resulting in a plusher and more luxurious sleeping experience.

We recommend Dormeuse for side sleepers and anyone who loves to sink into their mattress.

It’s not ideal for heavier sleepers, who’ll find its support inadequate to prevent bottoming out. Also, back and stomach sleepers won’t get proper lumbar support.

Dormeuse Fior Comfort & Firmness

Dormeuse Fior

Dormeuse Fior is Essentia’s ultra-luxury mattress. It feels softer and plusher than any other Essentia mattress.

It is the only Essentia mattress to have a comfort section thicker than the support section (5” vs. 3”). This results in a deep plush feel.

The Dormeuse Fior mattress has an exaggerated hug that makes it ideal for side sleepers and people who weigh less than average.

We don’t recommend it for other types of sleepers, including back and stomach sleepers, as well as people who weigh more than average. Even sleepers in the average weight range may find it too soft.

Do Essentia Organic Mattresses Sleep Hot?

Essentia ultra-luxury mattress

None of the Essentia mattresses contains traditional heat-trapping memory foam. All of the foam used in these mattresses is made from latex.

Latex foam is naturally cool and doesn’t trap heat. So no matter which Essentia mattress you choose, you’ll sleep cool.

Of course, there are some differences in the cooling performance of different Essentia mattresses.

According to Essentia, the Wholebody mattress range is the best when it comes to cooling. The Beausommet, Dormeuse, and Dormeuse Fior mattresses sleep around 7 degrees cooler than your body temperature.

The Performance collection–Classic 8, Energie Opus, and Eluxe – sleep about 3 degrees cooler.

If you are buying from the least expensive Lifestyle collection, the Tatami Hybrid mattress is the best for hot sleepers. The combination of latex foam and coils keeps the mattress cool.

All Essentia mattresses have an organic cotton cover. It is helpful for hot sleepers as well as people who experience night sweats. The highly breathable fabric dissipates heat quickly and wicks moisture away from your skin.

Essentia Mattresses Motion Isolation

Essentia tatami hybrid mattress

Essentia mattresses are not quite as motion free as traditional memory foam and poly foam mattresses. Latex foam is more responsive, so it transmits more motion compared with polyurethane foam.

But unless you are a very light sleeper, the slight motion transfer in Essentia mattresses shouldn’t bother you when your partner turns or wakes up.

If your partner tosses and turns all night, avoid the Tatami Hybrid. The combination of latex foam and coils makes the mattress even more responsive, meaning it transfers more disturbances across the mattress.

Essentia Mattresses Off-gassing

mattress off-gassing

You may experience a mild smell when you first unbox your Essentia mattress. It has a rubber-like smell because of the natural memory foam and latex foam (both made from rubber tree sap).

But it’s very different from the chemical-like smell you get from polyurethane foam mattresses such as memory foam. It also dissipates much quicker.

Most customers say that the smell goes away in a few hours. In contrast, it can take a polyurethane foam mattress several days to completely air out.

In cheap memory foam mattresses, the off-gassing can contain harmful chemicals.

Essentia mattresses are all-natural. So you can sleep easy knowing there are no potentially dangerous chemicals you are inhaling.

Essentia Mattresses Shipping & Delivery

essentia mattress review

How are Essentia mattresses shipped?

Your Essentia mattress will come compressed and rolled into a small box. Boxing the mattress makes it easier (and cheaper) to ship. It also ensures you’ll have no trouble carrying it through doorways and hallways.

Where do Essentia mattresses ship to?

Essentia delivers mattresses in the contiguous United States as well as Canada. They also fulfill international orders though it takes longer.

If you are ordering from outside the US or Canada, you’ll have to call in your order or fill a contact form.

How much does Essentia mattress shipping cost?

Shipping is free within Canada and the contiguous United States. Outside of those locations, Essentia charges shipping costs based on your location.

Will Essentia set up the mattress for me?

Free shipping includes delivery only up to your door. It’s up to you to take it inside and set it up.

If your building has no elevator access, FedEx delivery people will leave the mattress at the main entrance of the building.

If you want help setting up your new Essentia mattress, request the white glove delivery service. It costs $249 and includes a mattress set up in the room of your choice as well as old mattress removal and disposal.

How long does shipping take?

Shipping time depends on your location and the type of mattress you’ve ordered.

While it takes 2-3 days to process your order, it can take up to 15 business days for your mattress to arrive.

That’s because most Essentia mattresses are made-to-order.

120-Day Money-Back Guarantee

120-Day Money-Back Guarantee

Essentia offers a 120-day money-back guarantee. That’s their in-home trial period.

If within this period, you don’t like your mattresses, you can return it for a refund or an exchange with another mattress.

But unlike most online mattresses, they don’t offer free returns. Each return will cost you 9% of the listed mattress retail price. The company claims it’s to cover transportation costs.

International returns are charged this fee as well as an additional 5% processing fee.

20-Year Warranty

20-Year Warranty

Each Essentia organic mattress comes with a 20-year prorated warranty. Here’s how it works.

  • During the first ten years, the warranty covers you in full. Essentia will repair or replace the mattress at no cost to you.
  • In the 11th year, the warranty covers up to 50% of the listed retail price. If your claim involves getting a new mattress, you’ll pay half the listed price.
  • Warranty coverage reduces with each year: 12th year at 48%, 13th year at 45%, 15th year at 35%, and 16th-20th year at 25%.

This warranty does not include the mattress cover. That has a separate 2-year warranty.

What Types of Sleepers Are Essentia Mattresses Best For?

Eluxe essentia mattress

Essentia mattresses are ideal for sleepers with a larger budget. If you are looking for a low-budget (under $1,000) or even mid-budget ($1,000-$2,000) mattress, we don’t recommend Essentia.

Their queen sizes start at around $2,000.

As for comfort fit, all types of sleepers will find an Essentia mattress that’s right for them.

For back and stomach sleepers, we recommend medium-firm and firm Essentia mattresses. These include Stratami, Tatami, Tatami Hybrid, Classic 8, and Beausommet.

For side sleepers, we recommend medium and medium-soft Essentia mattresses. These include Energie Opus, Eluxe, Dormeuse, and Dormeuse Fior.

The Dormeuse Fior mattress is especially plush. We recommend it only for sleepers who love to sink deep into their mattresses.

For sleepers in the average and higher than average weight categories, we recommend the medium and medium-firm mattresses.

For lighter sleepers, the medium and medium-soft comfort options are the best.

Overall, Essentia mattresses are perfect for:

  • Anyone looking for an eco-friendly mattress.
  • Sleepers with a larger budget.
  • Anyone looking for a high-quality luxury mattress.
  • Anyone looking for a long-lasting mattress. Essentia mattresses are expected to last between 15 and 20 years.
  • Hot sleepers and people who live in a hot climate. All Essentia mattresses sleep cool.

How Do Essentia Organic Mattresses Compare to other Eco-Friendly Mattresses?

Essentia vs. PlushBeds

Essentia vs. Plushbeds botanical bliss

Like Essentia, PlushBeds offers a range of natural latex mattresses.

They include the Botanical Bliss, Luxury Bliss, and Natural Bliss. All are less expensive alternatives to the Essentia range of mattresses.

PlushBeds uses organic Talalay and Dunlop latex in their mattresses. The Luxury Bliss mattress also contains individually encased coils.

Unlike Essentia, who offer only one thickness, PlushBeds latex mattresses range between 6” and 12”. You can also select your preferred firmness level for each mattress.

In our opinion, PlushBeds mattresses offer better value for your money. You get to enjoy sleeping on an organic mattress without breaking the bank.

The only thing you might miss is the slightly plusher feel of the natural memory foam used in Essentia mattresses.

All other details are roughly similar. PlushBeds offers free shipping, a 100-night home trial (with free returns) and a 25-year prorated warranty.

Essentia vs. Avocado Green

Essentia vs. Avocado Green

Avocado Green is another budget, eco-friendly alternative to Essentia.

It is a hybrid mattress consisting of organic wool, organic latex, and organic cotton cover and pocket coils.

The standard Avocado mattress is 11” thick, but you can order an optional pillow top for a total thickness of 13”.

Avocado green comes with a 1-year in-home trial (also free returns) and a 25-year prorated warranty.

As with PlushBeds mattresses, we think Avocado Green offers better value for your money than Essentia.

The Avocado Green bed sleeps cool, has great support, is eco-friendly, and if you order the pillow-top option, it feels luxuriously plush.

Our Bottom Line

essentia mattress

Essentia sells some of the best eco-friendly mattresses you’ll find online or in a store. The only downside is that they are a bit expensive.

But if you are looking for high quality and long-lasting, eco-friendly mattress, and don’t mind the prices, Essentia is a great choice.
