A fine budget gel memory foam mattress you for less than $500. Sleeps cool, feels plush and has great lumbar support.
Great Choice for: Anyone on a budget looking for a good-quality memory foam mattress.
Avoid if: You prefer a bouncy innerspring or latex foam mattress. Or, you prefer a plusher top.
Lucid’s gel memory foam mattress is one of the lowest-priced mattresses sold online.
You may have seen Lucid’s incredibly low-priced beds on Amazon and Walmart.com. Lucid sells a wide range of affordable mattresses and sleep products.
The 12-inch gel memory foam mattress reviewed here is one of their most popular products, with over 1,000 reviews posted online. It is a single-comfort level, medium-firm mattress with decent lumbar support and just the right level of firmness for most people. It's not a revolutionary product, though.
Except for the price: at only for a Queen, you get a lot of value for your money. And with a 25-year warranty, you can sleep easy.
But is this bargain gel foam bed worth buying?

Lucid is one of the largest sleep products company selling online today.
If you’ve shopped for a mattress, topper, or foundation on Amazon, Walmart, or Sears, then you’ve probably come across one of their products.
Lucid is all about giving their customers options. Unlike most online mattress companies where you can only buy a single mattress, Lucid spoils you with choices. On their website you can shop by:
- comfort (soft, medium or firm)
- bedroom (master, kids or guest)
- Type of material (memory foam, latex, or hybrid) and
Lucid pledges to protect the environment while manufacturing their products. All of the foams used in this bed are CertiPUR-US certified, ensuring they are safe not just for the humans but also for the environment.
Although you can find this mattress in many online retail stores, We recommend buying it on Amazon.com for the best price.
There are two comfort levels to choose from; medium-firm or medium plush.
If you want an extra-firm or extra-plush feel, Lucid sells other mattresses that may meet your needs.
Aside from selecting your comfort level, you need to choose your size. They have all the traditional sizes plus an extra full XL option for all users.
After you place your order, it will take 24-48 hours to process.
You’ll be notified of the mattress shipping and receive a tracking number.
You are unlikely to find another memory foam mattress sold online that gives you more value for money than this one.
As you can see from the price chart below, the 12″ Lucid gel foam mattress sells for about half the average price of other memory foam mattresses:
30-Day Trial Period(!)
Unfortunately, Lucid Mattress does not provide a long trial period for their mattress. You only get 30-days to evaluate and return the mattress if it doesn't perform as expected.
I’ve never seen another gel foam mattress sold at this price range with a 15-year warranty – let alone 25 years.
Lucid says they use high-quality open-cell foam that lasts long. But can any foam mattress last that long before giving out?
When you look at the reviews online, you'll see more than a few customers reported permanent depressions after around five years. Rotating the mattress every few months can help avoid this kind of sagging.
Mattress orders are processed within 24-48 hours. You’ll be given a tracking number as soon as your order has shipped.
Shipping is free within the United States.
Delivery and Setup
As you'd expect for a mattress at this price point, Lucid does not offer White Glove Delivery.
It’s up to you to set up the mattress when it arrives. But don’t worry; it’s easy to unbox the mattress. The full setup takes less than 10 minutes.
The process is simple: carry the compact packing box inside (you may need some help) and lay it on the floor. Remove the box and carefully cut away the plastic wrap. Unroll the mattress onto your foundation and leave it to decompress.
Make sure you put it in a well-ventilated room, though, to allow the ‘new foam’ smell to escape. This mattress does emit non-toxic but noticeable gases. Open the windows to aerate it quicker.
Let the mattress rise at least 10-12 hours before you sleep on it. It may take up to 48 hours to decompress fully.
Foundation & Frame
What type of bed frame/support does Lucid mattress require?
Memory foam mattresses are heavier than other mattress types. So you'll need a strong, sturdy and flat foundation.
You can use a non-flexing box spring (ideally one made specifically for memory foam), a solid platform bed, a metal grid or a slatted platform.
Do not use the mattress on a futon or sofa bed. Also, don’t lay it on top of another mattress or you may void the warranty.

Care & Cleaning
Is a mattress protector needed for the Lucid mattress?
It’s a good idea to get a mattress protector for this mattress – especially if kids or teens will sleep on it. While the cover is removable (with some difficulty) and washable, a protector will keep the worst of stains and spills off of your mattress.
If the mattress is for a small child, you may want to consider getting a waterproof mattress protector.
Do you need to rotate the Lucid mattress?
Lucid recommends rotating the mattress every few months. Otherwise, you’ll notice that it sags unevenly and could get uncomfortable. The standard rotation period is every three months.
Note that you cannot flip this mattress. The bottom layer contains the foam foundation, which would be very uncomfortable to sleep on.
Aesthetics & Styling
When you unbox the mattress, the first thing you’ll notice is that it looks more luxurious than other budget beds. The soft white cover makes it look and feel more expensive than it is.
The 12-inch height also adds to its plush style.
The Lucid gel 12-inch memory foam mattress has a simple triple-foam-layer design. There are just one comfort layer and one support layer plus a special slice of foam in between.
3” Cool gel ventilated memory foam
This is the main comfort layer, as well as the cooling zone. As is the case with memory foam, this layer quickly responds to your body weight, shape, and sleeping position. It contours around your joints and curves, ensuring you don’t feel any uncomfortable pressure points.
It is especially good for side sleepers who have more vulnerable pressure points in contact with the mattress. It’s also great for those with back problems. The balance between soft contouring and firm support aligns your back naturally and reduces back pain.
As you may know, memory foam is not the best at cooling. You might even hesitate to buy this mattress because it uses memory foam. Well, worry, not. Lucid has added two features to keep the mattress cool, breathable, and dry.
First, the memory foam is infused with cooling gel, which dissipates heat away from the mattress. Second, the mattress is ventilated using an open-cell design. This increases airflow in and out of the mattress and ensures any body heat and sweat doesn’t get trapped in the foam.
1” Bamboo charcoal memory foam
This layer is also made of memory foam, but it has been infused with bamboo charcoal, which absorbs some allergens and odors from the air. It’s modestly helpful for people with asthma, allergies, and odor sensitivities.
8” Supportive base foam
The extra-thick base foam is one of the reasons this mattress lasts so long. It provides compression support, especially for couples and heavier sleepers. It also keeps it from sagging.
The Lucid mattress comes with a Tencel cover. Tencel, sometimes also called lyocell, is a proprietary fabric that is soft and very breathable. Its manufacturing process is more eco-friendly compared to many other fabrics.
The Tencel cover on the Lucid mattress adds to its plush feel while also helping keep the mattress cool.
The cover is removable, but it’s a tedious process. You are better off buying a mattress protector.
Many customers claim there was a noticeable smell when they unpacked the mattress. This is normal and is a result of the foam being ‘fresh’ as well as the tightly compressed packing.
The smell should fade away within 2-12 hours. Before sleeping on it, leave it uncovered in a ventilated room to air it out faster.
Note that the foams are CertiPUR-US certified. There are no harmful chemicals released during off-gassing.
The Lucid mattress is not as plush as a pillow top hotel mattress, but it’s more comfortable than you’d expect for its price.
The top memory foam layer cradles your body without letting you sink in too far. It contours to your shape and sleeping position. If you sleep on your side, it cradles your shoulder and hip to prevent them from digging into the mattress. If you sleep on your back, it aligns your lumbar area naturally while contouring around your hips and upper back.
Customers say it is slightly firmer than they expected in the beginning, but within a couple of weeks, it relaxes and feels softer. So give it time before calling Lucid to make a return. Unfortunately, with a short 30-day return period, you won't have that much time to decide.
This is a medium-firm mattress. It’s neither too soft nor too firm. I’d rate it between 5-6 on the firmness scale with ten being very firm.
You may experience a different firmness depending on your weight and sleeping position.
But most customers say it’s a great-sleeping mattress for the price.
As you see with most medium-firm foam mattresses, sinkage is deep enough to provide contouring but not too much as to compromise lumbar support.
Surprisingly – for a budget foam mattress – the Lucid 12-inch has really good edge support. The foam won’t collapse when you sit or sleep on the edge.
Motion transfer is well-controlled with this mattress. Your fidgety partner (or pet) probably won’t keep you up at night.
The ventilated and gel-infused top layer does a nice job keeping this mattress cool. The breathable Tencel cover also helps prevent heat and moisture build-up.
You can use a heating pad if you want, but be careful that it does not go above 125 degrees as that could damage the mattress and reduce its lifespan.
Lucid Latex vs. Lucid Hybrid vs. Lucid Memory Foam: Key Differences
In addition to their gel memory foam mattress, Lucid also makes latex and hybrid mattresses. Here are the key differences between the three types of mattresses.
Lucid Latex Mattresses: How They Differ
Lucid sells four latex mattresses. These mattresses have a firmer and springier feel than the Lucid gel memory foam mattress.
They also sleep cooler.
The four mattresses include a 12” hybrid latex mattress (latex + gel memory foam + springs), another 10” hybrid latex mattress with similar construction, a 16” latex mattress containing memory foam and a budget 10” latex mattress with a polyfoam base.
Important to note is that Lucid doesn’t sell an all-latex mattress. If you want a mattress with latex foam from top to bottom, Lucid currently doesn’t have one.
Lucid Hybrid Mattresses: How They Differ
If you want a more supportive mattress, choose one of Lucid’s hybrid mattresses. They combine foam and innersprings to provide the best support and pressure relief.
There are four Lucid hybrid mattresses to choose from.
- A 10” hybrid with bamboo charcoal-infused memory foam, Aloe Vera infused memory foam and pocket coils.
- A 12” hybrid with similar memory foam + pocket coils construction.
- A 10” latex hybrid with natural latex foam, gel memory foam and pocket coils.
- A 12” hybrid with similar natural latex + gel memory foam + pocket coils construction.
One area where the hybrid mattresses perform better than Lucid’s all-foam options is edge support. The pocket coil layers provide excellent edge-to-edge support, ensuring you sleep comfortably whether you are in the middle or at the edge of the bed.
Lucid’s hybrid mattresses also sleep very cool thanks to the airflow through the coils that help dissipate excess heat.
Other Memory Foam Mattresses
The 12” mattress that is the focus of this review is not the only memory foam mattress Lucid sells.
You can choose a more luxurious or cheaper alternative.
If you want the most luxurious option, we recommend the plush 14” gel memory foam mattress.
It contains gel memory foam, bamboo charcoal (keeps mattress smelling fresh and helps maintain comfortable temperature and humidity), and a 9” supportive base.
If you want something more pocket-friendly, we recommend the 10” plush gel memory foam mattress. It consists of contouring gel memory foam on top and a supportive base underneath.
If you are shopping for a new memory foam mattress for your kiddo, Lucid sells 5”, 6” and 8” gel memory foam mattresses.
They also have 10” and 12” hybrid mattresses containing gel memory foam, latex foam and pocket coils. These are ideal for those who love the feel of memory foam but want more support and bounciness.
Summary: Which One To Buy For You
Lucid sure has lots of options to choose from. It can be a bit confusing to choose from the many designs and sizes they offer.
The secret is to know what kind of mattress you want.
Maybe you prefer a firmer mattress, or you find a plush bed to be more comfortable. Or perhaps you are looking for a bouncy mattress or if you are a hot sleeper, a mattress that sleeps cool.
If you love plush mattresses, buy one of Lucid’s memory foam mattresses. The 12” gel memory foam mattress we have reviewed is a great option. Other good options include the 14” gel memory foam mattress and the 16” memory foam + latex foam mattress.
If you want a mattress with a bit of bounce, any of their latex or hybrid mattresses will do. For the best responsiveness, get the 10” or 12” latex hybrid mattresses. The combined responsiveness of latex foam and pocket coils makes for one pleasantly bouncy mattress.
If you weigh more than average, you’ll find their hybrid mattresses to be the most supportive. Pocket coils provide excellent compression support — our top recommendation for heavier sleepers is the 12” latex hybrid mattress.
If you are a hot sleeper, get the 12” latex hybrid mattress. The combined cooling action of latex foam and pocket coils will help you sleep comfortably.
The right choice for you also depends on your sleeping position.
Back and stomach sleepers should get a medium-firm Lucid mattress. For side sleepers, we recommend a medium-plush or plush mattress. For combined sleepers (those who change sleeping positions as they sleep), try a medium plush or medium-firm mattress.
Lucid indicates the firmness of each mattress, so it’ll be easy to choose the right firmness.
Of course, the mattress may feel different from what Lucid has indicated on their website. Mattress firmness is objective, which is why Lucid offers a 30-day return period.
If you think the mattress you’ve ordered is too firm or too soft, send it back and choose another one.
But give the mattress at least two weeks to allow your body to acclimate to it. You may find that you like it after all.
