A good sofa can easily cost over $1,000. Premium ones can cost as much as $2,000 or $3,000. But while many people are willing to shell out this much money for a couch, they hesitate to buy a mattress that costs more than $700.
You spend much more time in your bed than on your sofa. So it’s only right that you invest in a quality mattress.
The quality of your mattress determines how well you sleep which in turn matters a great deal in your health and work productivity. So when it comes to the question of how much you should spend on a mattress the best answer is ‘As much as you can afford'.
Of course not everyone can afford a $2,000 mattress. But there are still plenty of quality and affordable online mattresses. In this blog post, we are going to look at what features and sleeping experience you can expect for the amount you spend on a mattress.
But first…
Recommended Minimum Budget: $600
If you find yourself spending less than $600 on a queen sized mattress, it is most likely a low quality mattress.
It may even feel comfortable for a while but it won’t last. Your back will soon start to hurt, you’ll toss more at night as you struggle to be comfortable and in a couple of years your new mattress will have sagged beyond recognition.
If you want a comfortable and supportive mattress that will last long, set your minimum budget at $600.
Budget Mattresses: $600-$800
Thanks to online mattress companies that deliver mattresses packed into a box, mattresses have gotten much cheaper. You can get a really good mattress for around $700.
What to expect at this price range
- Basic all-foam structure and average thickness. Just 2-3 layers of foam with a height of between 8 and 10 inches. It’s rare to find a quality innerspring mattress at this price range.
- No plush/luxurious sleeping experience. The mattress will feel normal. Don’t expect the plush feeling of high-end hotel mattresses. But as long as you get good support and the mattress is comfortable, you can still enjoy a good night’s sleep.
- Poor edge support. Most mattresses in this range don’t come with a dedicated edge support system. This may create some discomfort for couples who sleep near the edge.
- Adequate cooling. Most online mattresses have no heating issues nowadays. Whether you spend $600 or $1,600, you don’t have to worry about a hot stuffy mattress.
- 10-year warranty.
Mattresses in this price range include Ghostbed, Casper Essential and Nest Quail.
Mid-range Mattresses: $850 – $1,200
This is where you will find the best online mattress brands. At this price range, you can get a premium mattress that will last a decade or more. Even if you are on a budget, try to get a mattress within this range. Most sellers offer financing help where you can pay in easy monthly installments.
What to expect at this price range
- Premium hybrid and innerspring mattresses. These mattresses typically offer more support and last longer. But expect to pay at least $1,000 for a good innerspring or hybrid mattress.
- Advanced cooling technology. Phase changing fabrics, open or semi open cell foam, gel or copper infused foam – these are some of the cooling techniques used in mid-range mattresses. The result is a very comfortable mattress that stays cool and fresh all the time.
- Good edge support. Most mid-range mattresses have reinforced edges for better support or they are innerspring mattresses which naturally have excellent edge support.
- Thicker profile. You’ll find mattresses with 3-5 layers measuring up to 11 or 12 inches thick.
- Basic customizability. Several mattress companies offer split options for couples.
- 10-20 year warranty.
Mattresses in this price range include Leesa, Loom and Leaf and Purple.
Premium/Luxury Mattresses: $1,300 – $3,000
If you are looking for an organic or natural mattress, this is where you’ll find it. A lot of plush innerspring and hybrid mattresses are also in this price range.
What to expect at this price range
- A plush sleeping experience. Most luxury mattresses use a pillow top or a special type of comfort foam to create a plush top layer.
- Thicker mattresses. Mattresses can be as high as 14 inches.
- Natural and organic mattresses.
- Advanced customizability. Going beyond split mattresses, you’ll find mattresses whose firmness can be changed simple by interchanging the layers or where the company customizes a mattress just for you.
- Free setup services. Because these mattresses are very heavy, most companies offer free shipping and free setup. But some may require a fee to setup your new mattress and take away the old one.
- 15-25 year warrany.
Mattresses in this price range include Sapira hybrid mattress, Avocado Green mattress and PlushBeds Botanical Bliss.
