1. Best Upholstered King Size Bed Frame: DG Casa Bardy Upholstered Panel Bed Frame

king size bed frame

The DG Casa Bardy bed frame has polyester upholstery on the headboard as well as the side panels. It’s a great choice if you want a bed with a soft touch surface.

Pros

  • Soft upholstery on headboard & side rails.
  • Sturdy wooden frame.
  • Modern low profile style.
  • Easy to assemble.

Cons

  • Requires box spring.
  • Limited weight capacity.

Our Review

The DG Casa Bardy has soft upholstering on most of its surface including the entire headboard, the side panels and the rear panel.

So every surface you are likely to touch has a nice soft feel. The headboard is even cushioned and is adorned with diamond tufting.

The only part without upholstering is the legs.

Underneath the polyester fabric is a sturdy wooden frame that’s easy to put together. As long as you tighten everything completely, the frame should be silent no matter how much you move.

If the polyester upholstery is not your thing, there’s also a white faux leather option.

Note that the DG Casa Bardy doesn't have slats to support a mattress. You’ll need a box spring or foundation.

Issues & Limitations

The DG Casa Bardy bed frame has a low profile design with just 3” of clearance. So you don't get much underbed storage space.

It also has a relatively low weight limit of 500lbs. We don't recommend it for heavy couples.

2. Best Cheap King Size Bed Frame: ZINUS Compack Metal Bed Frame

good quality bed frames

Shopping on a budget? The Zinus Compack is one of the cheapest bed frames in the market. It’s a basic metal bed frame that doesn't come with a headboard or slats.

Pros

  • Low price.
  • Strong solid steel construction – 1200lbs capacity.
  • Easy and quick assembly.
  • Low profile design can accommodate box spring and mattress.

Cons

  • Requires box spring.
  • Feet are not recessed far enough to prevent stubbing accidents.

Our Review

The Zinus Compack is as basic as a bed frame can get, hence the low price.

It consists of a King size solid steel rectangular frame with a center support beam. 9 rubber capped (to prevent scratches on floor) feet, including three at the center, provide plenty of support.

The Compack bed frame can easily hold up to 1200lbs of weight. This includes the weight of a box spring and mattress.

And because the frame sits low, you don't have to worry about your bed getting too high once you place a box spring and mattress on it.

Issues & Limitations

If you don't already have one, you’ll need to budget for a box spring or foundation to use with the Zinus Compack bed frame. It also doesn't come with a headboard.

A common complaint from customers is that the legs are not recessed far enough. It’s fairly easy to stub your toes. Look for a DIY solution to cover the outer legs such as foam.

3. Best King Size Bed Frame With Slats: ZINUS SmartBase Euro Slats Metal Platform Bed Frame

iron bed frames

If you are shopping for a bed frame that doesn't need a box spring, we recommend the Zinus SmartBase platform bed frame.

It’s a basic bed frame like the Compack, but it includes slats that can directly support a mattress.

Pros

  • No box spring required.
  • Strong steel frame with high weight capacity – 1500lbs.
  • Lots of underbed storage space.
  • Easy to assemble.

Cons

  • No headboard and it’s hard to attach one.

Our Review

The ZINUS SmartBase Euro Slats makes setting up your bed much easier. No need to bother with a foundation or box spring.

Just plop your mattress directly on the slats. The wooden slats are spaced close enough (2.75”) to support any kind of mattress including memory foam mattresses.

The frame itself is solid steel and it can support a weight of up to 1500lbs. It doesn't squeak or wobble.

Assembling the ZINUS SmartBase frame is pretty easy; everything you need is provided.

We love that the SmartBase frame provides a lot more underbed clearance compared to the Compack bed frame. You have 12.5 inches of space to store stuff.

Issues & Limitations

The ZINUS SmartBase bed frame doesn't come with a headboard. The problem is that it’s difficult to attach your own headboard.

The frame doesn't have mounting points for a headboard and even mounting brackets from Zinus don't work on the SmartBase frame.

Some people found a way to attach a headboard. But if you really need a headboard on your bed, either find one that comes with one or is compatible with any headboard.

4. Best Wooden King Size Bed Frame: ZINUS Vivek Deluxe Wood Platform Bed Frame

low bed frame with drawers

Wood bed frames add warmth and character to any bedroom. They are pretty strong, too.

Our favorite wooden King size bed frame is the Zinus Vivek deluxe platform bed frame. It comes complete with a headboard and slats, so you don't need anything else other than a mattress.

Pros

  • Solid wood bed frame.
  • Can support up to 700lbs.
  • No box spring needed.
  • Includes headboard.
  • Multiple finishes to choose from.

Cons

  • Limited underbed storage.
  • Costs more than most metal bed frames.

Our Review

You can get the Zinus Vivek Deluxe in four stains: cherry, antique espresso, natural, and rustic pine.

The bed frame is made mostly with real solid wood, though there are some plywood and steel components.

The Zinus Vivek Deluxe is a complete bed. It has a headboard as well as wooden slats. So you don't need to use a box spring or foundations.

Assembly is fairly easy with everything you need provided in the package. Once you put it together as per the instructions, it should be silent with no wobbling.

Don't worry if you have a heavy mattress or you and your partner are heavy; the Zinus Vivek Deluxe bed frame can support up to 700lbs of weight.

It’s not as much as a metal bed frame, but it’s more than enough for most couples.

Issues & Limitations

The Zinus Vivek Deluxe is a low profile bed frame with only 6.3” of clearance under the bed. If you want a bed frame with storage space underneath, this is not it.

5. Best Faux Leather King Size Bed Frame: ZINUS Jade Faux Leather Upholstered Platform Bed

If you are looking for something more luxurious, try the Zinus Jade faux leather bed frame. The black faux leather upholstery on the headboard and side panels looks and feels great.

Pros

  • Luxurious faux leather upholstery.
  • Sturdy wooden frame.
  • Includes slats – no box spring required.
  • Goes well with modern decor.

Cons

  • Pricey.

Our Review

The Zinus Jade is one of the best looking bed frames we’ve come across. The black PU leather upholstery on the headboard, side rails and rear panel give it a luxurious look.

The black legs and the frame’s low profile design make the Zinus Jade an especially perfect match for modern decor bedrooms.

Underneath the upholstery is a strong wooden frame that can support up to 700lbs of weight. That includes the weight of the mattress as well as you and your partner.

You don't need a box spring for the Zinus Jade frame. It comes with wooden slats that you can place your mattress directly on.

As with most Zinus bed frames, assembling the Zinus Jade is easy and quick. Everything is well packed, you get the tools you need to put the frame together, and the instructions are easy to follow.

Issues & Limitations

Two issues with the Zinus Jade bed frame

One, it has limited underbed storage. With just 6.2 inches of clearance, you won’t be able to store bulky stuff under the bed.

Two, it’s pricey compared to other bed frames.

If you are on a budget, try a fabric upholstered bed frame like the DG Casa Bardy frame we reviewed above.

6. Best Metal King Size Bed Frame With Headboard: Novogratz Bushwick Metal Bed

king size bed frame

If you are looking for a metal bed frame that is more eye-catching than the Zinus Compack or SmartBase, try the Novogratz Bushwick Metal Bed.

Instead of just a basic metal platform, the Novogratz Bushwick metal bed also includes a beautiful headboard and footboard.

Pros

  • Comes with headboard and footboard.
  • Unique modern-industrial design.
  • Sturdy metal frame.
  • Adjustable clearance.

Cons

  • Limited weight capacity.

Our Review

The Novogratz Bushwick metal bed frame pulls off a great modern-industrial look that works well in most bedrooms.

Both the headboard and footboard feature metal spindles running top to bottom. The gray finish further adds to the industrial style.

The Novogratz Bushwick bed frame is easy to put together. During assembly, you can set it at two different heights: one with 6” clearance and the other with 11”.

The bed frame comes complete with slats, so no need for a box spring.

Issues & Limitations

We do not recommend the Novogratz Bushwick metal bed for heavy couples. It has a weight limit of just 500lbs. Remember the weight of your mattress also counts towards this limit.

7. Best Vintage/Iron King Size Bed Frame: Walker Edison Vintage Iron Pipe King Size Bed

iron bed frame king

If you love metal beds with a vintage, antique or Victorian style, iron bed frames are the best. Most feature ornate headboards and footboards.

Our favorite iron King size bed frame is the Walker Edison vintage iron pipe bed. We love the iron pipe details on the headboard and footboard.

Pros

  • Beautiful vintage style.
  • Available in bronze and white finishes.
  • Easy to assemble.
  • Tall headboard to accommodate box spring and mattress.

Cons

  • Requires a box spring.
  • Limited capacity.

Our Review

You can get the Walker Edison vintage bed frame in either bronze or white.

Go with bronze if you want a more antique feel, and white if you want to balance the vintage iron pipe details with a bit of a modern look.

The bed frame is easy to put together, though you’ll need to use a box spring since it doesn't have slats to support a mattress.

The clearance under the bed is 6”. Not much if you want to store things underneath, but perfect if you have a thick mattress and box spring.

The headboard is also designed to accommodate a mattress and box spring. It rises 56” from the floor, making it taller than most headboards in bed frames. This ensures it won’t be covered by the mattress.

Issues & Limitations

The Walker Edison vintage bed frame supports a max 500lbs of weight. We do not recommend it for heavy couples, especially those who also have a thick and heavy mattress.

8. Best Heavy Duty King Size Bed Frame: Ziyoo 16 Inch 3500lbs Heavy Duty Mattress Foundation

good quality king size bed frame

The Ziyoo heavy duty mattress foundation has a weight capacity of 3500lbs. It’s a great choice for heavy couples and those who sleep on a heavy mattress.

Pros

  • Extra heavy duty.
  • Includes wooden slats – no box spring required.
  • Lots of underbed storage.
  • No squeaking.
  • Affordable.
  • Pre-drilled holes for attaching headboard and footboard.

Cons

  • It’s easy to stub your toes on the legs.

Our Review

If you have a heavy King size mattress (e.g. latex, memory foam or pocket coil), a heavy duty bed frame like this one by Ziyoo is the best choice.

The solid steel frame provides adequate support for your mattress as well as you and your partner. It’s especially suitable for heavy couples.

Once you put the frame together, which is easy to do, the frame doesn't squeak even one bit.

The Ziyoo heavy duty bed frame comes with wide wooden slats that you can place your mattress directly on. You don't need a box spring.

You wouldn’t want to use a box spring anyway since the frame is already high. The slats are 16 inches high off the floor; adding a box spring and mattress would have you climbing the bed with a ladder.

The high profile design creates lots of underbed storage space.

Another thing we like about the Ziyoo heavy duty bed frame is that it’s super easy to add your own headboard or footboard. The frame already has pre-drilled holes.

Issues & Limitations

The most common complaint from customers is that it’s easy to stub your toes on the metal legs. They are not recessed even a bit.

9. Best Low Profile King Size Bed Frame: ZINUS Arnav Metal Platform Bed Frame

best king size frame

If you prefer sleeping close to the floor or you love the aesthetics of a low bed, we recommend the Zinus Arnav metal bed frame.

It is a low profile bed frame that sits just 10 inches off the floor.

Pros

  • Modern low profile design.
  • Available with & without a headboard.
  • Comes with wood slats – no box spring needed.
  • Strong steel frame that supports up to 700lbs.

Cons

  • Limited storage space under the bed.

Our Review

Low profile bed frames look trendy and modern. They are also great for small and low-ceiling bedrooms. They make the space feel bigger.

There are bed frames that sit lower than the Zinus Arnav. If the Arnav’s 10” height is not low enough for you, check out the Mellow Low Profile 6″ bed frame or the even lower 4” Zinus Quick Lock foundation.

But for most sleepers looking for a low bed, the 10” height of the Zinus Arnav is perfect for sleeping low without getting too close to the ground. It also leaves some usable underbed storage.

The Arnav bed frame is made from steel with plywood slats, so you don't need a box spring.

The frame can hold up to 700lbs of weight.

You can get the Zinus Arnav bed frame with or without the headboard. The option without a headboard has pre-drilled holes on two of the legs where you can attach a headboard later.

Issues & Limitations

Yes, the Zinus Arnav does have some storage space underneath.

But with a clearance of just 7”, you are limited only to boxes and stuff that can fit through that space.

If you plan to use the underbed space for storage, don't get a low profile bed frame.

10. Best King Size Bed Frame With Drawers: Novogratz Kelly Bed with Storage

Novogratz’s Kelly Upholstered Storage Bed

Instead of an empty space under the bed, the Novogratz Kelly Bed frame has built-in drawers, two large ones on each side of the bed.

Pros

  • Has drawers for easy organization.
  • Comes with headboard and slats.
  • Upholstered bed frame.
  • Easy to assemble.

Cons

  • Slats are too far apart and they break easily.

Our Review

Drawers provide more organized storage compared to pushing boxes and bins under the bed. It is also easy to access stuff from the drawers.

The Novogratz Kelly bed frame has two large drawers on each side of the bed. Each drawer measures 35 inches long, 23.5 inches deep and 6.5 inches high.

The drawers actually sit on the floor under the bed and have small caster wheels to make it easy to pull them out and back in.

Even with the drawers, the Novogratz Kelly bed frame is fairly easy to put together. It takes about an hour to assemble it.

It comes complete with a 39” high headboard and wooden slats. You don't need a box spring.

Issues & Limitations

The wood and metal frame of the Novogratz Kelly bed feels sturdy and solid. It can support up to 500lbs of weight.

The problem, according to a number of customers, is the wooden slats. They feel flimsy and start breaking within a few months.

Also, they are too far apart (about 4”) to support some mattresses like memory foam. You may need to place a bunkie board on the slats to avoid voiding your mattress warranty.

11. Best High King Size Bed Frame: Olee Sleep 18″ Heavy Duty King Steel Slat Bed Frame

good quality king size bed frame

If you want lots of underbed storage or you simply prefer sleeping high up from the floor, the Olee Sleep 18” steel slat bed is one of the best high bed frames.

Pros

  • Extra-high bed frame with plenty of underbed storage.
  • No box spring needed.
  • Steel frame and slats support up to 2,000lbs.
  • Pre-drilled holes for a headboard.

Cons

  • Mattress slips on the slats.
  • Slats are too widely spaced for some mattresses.

Our Review

The 18 inch height of the Olee Sleep bed frame gives you a clearance of 16.2 inches under the bed. That’s enough space to store large boxes and bins.

The frame is all-steel, including the slats. So it’s pretty heavy duty. It can hold up a weight of up to 2,000lbs.

You don't need a box spring for the Olee Sleep bed frame. It would make the mattress too high anyway. Place your mattress directly on the slats.

Issues & Limitations

Watch out for the metal legs. They are not recessed and it’s easy to stub your toes on them. Ouch.

Many customers also complain that the mattress slips and slides too much on the slats. There’s no lip to keep the mattress contained.

You may need to buy an anti-slip mat or tape to keep your mattress in place.

Another issue with the Olee Sleep 18 inch bed frame is that the slats are too widely spaced. There’s about 8 inches between them.

If you have a foam mattress, you’ll definitely need a bunkie board for better support.

12. Best Luxury King Size Bed Frame: Meridian Furniture Bliss Collection Modern Velvet Upholstered Bed

best king size frame

The Meridian Furniture Bliss bed frame has more upholstery than other upholstered beds we’ve seen.

It features soft velvet upholstering on the headboard, side panels and around the mattress. Storage nooks all around the mattress provide space to keep your bedding and other stuff.

Pros

  • Soft velvet upholstery.
  • Lots of storage & sitting space around the mattress.
  • Extra-tall headboard.
  • Available in multiple color options.

Cons

  • Expensive.
  • Takes more time to assemble.
  • Big and heavy – not suitable for small bedrooms.

Our Review

The actual mattress frame/platform in the Meridian Furniture Bliss bed is an island at the center. Your mattress slots perfectly into a sunken space.

Apart from the top side with the upholstered headboard, all the other three sides have storage spaces with lids. The lids are upholstered in soft velvet and they double up as sitting areas.

So you are surrounded by soft tufted velvet everywhere.

The extra-tall headboard (60.5 inches high) adds to the luxury look of the Meridian Furniture Bliss bed frame.

The frame underneath all that velvet is wooden and includes slats so you don't need a box spring. The frame can support up to 500lbs, so we don't recommend this bed for heavy couples.

You can get the Meridian Furniture Bliss bed frame in several different colors including blue, pink, green, and white.

Issues & Limitations

The Meridian Furniture Bliss bed frame is expensive. If you are shopping on a budget, it’s probably not what you are looking for.

It’s also huge because of all the extra space around the mattress. Measure your room first to make sure it’ll fit. The King size measures 98” long, 96” wide, and 60.5” high.

It’s also heavy with the King size weighing 243lbs. This, combined with all the extra storage components, makes assembly longer and more tedious.

But you can pay for professional assembly when you order the bed frame.

13. Best No Tool Assembly King Size Bed Frame: ZINUS SmartBase Tool-Free Assembly Bed Frame

best king size bed frame with headboard

Looking for a King size bed frame that takes minutes to assemble without any tools? We recommend the Zinus SmartBase tool-free assembly bed frame.

Despite requiring no tools to put together, it can support up to 1500lbs of weight.

Pros

  • Fast and easy tool-free assembly.
  • High weight capacity.
  • Box spring not required.
  • Lots of underbed storage.
  • Affordable.

Cons

  • Basic in terms of style.

Our Review

The Zinus SmartBase literally takes minutes to assemble. All you need to do is unbox the frame and tighten the wingnuts by hand.

Most people took 10-15 minutes to put it together.

The SmartBase frame has an all-steel structure that can support up to 1500lbs. So don't be afraid to place a heavy mattress on it. It can also support heavy couples without squeaking.

The crisscrossing vertical and horizontal metal slats can support any type of mattress, including memory foam.

The Zinus SmartBase is 14” high, which leaves lots of space under the bed to store boxes and other stuff.

Overall, the Zinus SmartBase is one of the best King size bed frames when it comes to value for money.

It’s cheaper than most other bed frames, it’s super easy for most people to assemble, and it offers plenty of support.

Issues & Limitations

The only issue we have with the Zinus SmartBase is how basic it is in terms of style. Granted, that’s what makes it affordable and easy to assemble.

But if you want an eye-catching bed frame, this is not it.

That said, you can attach a headboard to the frame to make it more stylish.

14. Best King Size Canopy Bed Frame: DHP Modern Canopy Bed

best king size bed frame with headboard

If you’ve always wanted a canopy bed – whether for privacy, coziness, or just aesthetics – we recommend the DHP modern canopy bed.

Add your own curtains or sheers to complete the canopy.

Pros

  • Cozy King size canopy bed.
  • Includes slats and headboard.
  • Multiple color options.
  • Durable metal frame.

Cons

  • Easy to assemble, but requires at least two people.

Our Review

A canopy bed can make your bed feel cozier. It’s also great for privacy and warmth.

The DHP modern canopy bed comes as a complete setup with a bed frame, a canopy frame, metal slats and a built-in headboard.

You don't need a box spring or foundation. The only things you need are a mattress and curtains or sheers.

The metal frappe of the DHP canopy bed has a capacity of 500lbs, so we don't recommend it for heavy couples.

You can get the canopy bed in several colors including gray, white, and gold.

Tip: Remember to measure the height of your bedroom. The canopy on the DHP bed is 73.5 inches tall. Make sure it will not touch the ceiling, the fan or lights.

Issues & Limitations

While the DHP canopy bed is not too difficult to assemble, it requires more than one pair of hands.

If you live alone, you may need to find local pros to assemble it for you or ask for help from a neighbor.

15. Best Foldable King Size Bed Frame: AmazonBasics Foldable, 14″ Black Metal Platform Bed Frame

best king size bed frame with headboard

Looking for a King size bed frame you can fold and put away when not in use? We recommend the AmazonBasics foldable 14” bed frame.

It’s easy to assemble or fold and requires no tools.

Pros

  • Easy to assemble and fold.
  • Low price.
  • Large underbed storage space.
  • Sturdy steel frame that can support heavy sleepers.

Cons

  • Both the mattress and frame slip too much.
  • Basic styling.

Our Review

The AmazonBasics 14” bed frame is another good choice if you are shopping for a no-tools assembly bed frame.

The king size consists of two halves that you can set up and join with just your hands.

The metal frame feels sturdy and makes no squeaks even during sex. It’s also pretty strong.

The manufacturer doesn't specify the frame’s total weight capacity; just that it can support sleepers weighing up to 250lbs.

So the king size can support a combined couple’s weight of up to 500lbs.

The 14” frame height provides plenty of underbed storage space. And if that’s not enough for you, there’s a taller 18” option.

Issues & Limitations

This AmazonBasics bed frame has a basic no-frills design. If you are looking for a stylish or unique bed frame, this is not it.

Another issue is that the frame slips too much on the floor. You’ll need to place something like yoga mats under the legs to keep it in place.

Mattresses also tend to slide around on the slats. Use an anti-slip tape or mat to prevent it.

King Size Bed Frame Buying Guide

King Size Bed Frames dimensions

What To Look For When Buying a King Size Bed Frame

1. Type of Bed Frame

Here are the most common types of King size bed frames.

  • Metal bed frames – these are the most common and typically the cheapest. They range from basic no-frills frames to ornate modern, industrial or vintage beds. They are strong but weight capacity depends on construction quality. It varies between 500lbs to over 3,000lbs.
  • Wood bed frames – these have a warmer and cozier feel, though they cost more. Good quality wood bed frames can support 700lbs or more of weight.
  • Upholstered bed frames – ideal for those who want a luxury soft touch bed frame. Upholstery options include velvet, polyester, and faux leather.
  • Iron bed frames – these are metal frames with an iron headboard and footboard, typically with ornate styling. Perfect if you want a vintage or antique bed frame.
  • Canopy bed frames – these bed frames consist a bed frame with a canopy frame above from which you can hang curtains. They are great for those who like the coziness and privacy of a canopy bed.

2. Dimensions

Double check the exact dimensions of the bed frame. Unlike mattresses, king bed frames don't have standard dimensions.

The most important thing is to make sure the frame is the same size or slightly larger than a king size mattress, which measures 76” wide and 80” long.

If you look at the comparison table at the beginning of this guide, you’ll notice that most King size bed frames are at least 80 inches long and 76 inches wide.

Checking the exact dimensions of the frame also lets you determine if it’ll fit in your bedroom.

3. Construction Quality & Support

Zinus Faux Leather Upholstered Platform Bed with Wooden Slats

Get a bed frame that is sturdy and well made. Check customer reviews for complaints about the slats breaking or the frame bending after some time.

You should be able to sleep on the bed and have sex on it without worrying about noises or breaking anything.

Make sure the frame has center support legs. These ensure the frame doesn't sag in the middle.

4. Weight Capacity

For light and average-weight couples, a king size bed frame with a 500-700lbs weight capacity is adequate. It can hold your combined weight plus the weight of the mattress.

Heavier couples should get a heavy duty king size frame with a capacity of at least 1000lbs. Some of the strongest bed frames can hold 3,000lbs or more of weight.

5. Height & Clearance

If you want underbed storage or prefer a low profile bed, look for a bed frame with a height 10 inches or less.

But if you want plenty of underbed storage, you’ll need more clearance under the bed. We recommend a frame height of 14” to 18”. A tall frame is also ideal for those who like sleeping higher.

6. Box Spring Required?

Check whether the bed frame comes with slats. If it does, you don't need a box spring and can place your mattress directly on the slats.

Tip: Check the space between slats and make sure it is within the range required by the mattress manufacturer. If the slats are too wide, find another bed frame or plan to use a bunkie board

If the bed frame has no slats, you’ll need to use a box spring or foundation.

7. Headboard

Decide if you want to get a bed frame with a headboard or without. This comes down to your style preferences – the headboard doesn't affect the structural quality of the bed frame.

If you’d like to attach your own headboard, make sure the frame you buy has holes for it or can accept headboard brackets.

8. Ease of Assembly

Check how easy it is to assemble the bed frame and how long it takes.

Most bed frames take 1-2 hours to put together and the tools you need are provided.

If you live alone or you just want a bed frame that’s super easy to assemble, get one of those tool-free assembly bed frames.

9. Storage

If you want something more organized than pushing boxes and bins under the bed, look for a king size bed frame with integrated storage.

Bed frames with drawers provide an easy and secure way to store extra bedding, gadgets and other odds and ends where they are easy to reach.
