By the way, you don't need to use any of the SmartBase foundations with a box spring. You can place your mattress directly on the foundation.

About Zinus SmartBase
1. High Weight Capacity
Each of the SmartBase foundations can support up to 4,400lbs of evenly distributed weight. If you have a very heavy mattress or weigh more than average, this foundation holds up perfectly.
The SmartBase foundation is especially ideal for couples where both of you have a big body. The foundation can support your combined weight as well as the weight of the mattress.
2. Under-bed Clearance
All three foundations provide plenty of under-bed clearance for storage. Even the lowest 14″ foundation still leaves about a foot of space underneath the bed, enough to stow away a sizable box or suitcase.
Under-bed clearance is 13″ for the 14″ foundation, 15″ for the 16″ foundation, and 17″ for the 18″ foundation.
3. No Box Spring Required
One of the best things about the Zinus SmartBase foundation is that you don't need to spend money on a box spring to complete your setup.
As long as you have the foundation and your mattress, you are good to go. Heavy gauge steel wires spaced 4″ apart provide the support and bounce you'd normally get from a box spring.
Zinus says they made the SmartBase foundations higher than average to eliminate the need for a box spring as well as provide under-bed storage.
You can use box spring if you want, but it might make your bed too high since the foundation is pretty high already. Also, remember that a box spring will take up some of the foundation's weight capacity and place extra stress on it.
4. Noise and Wobble Free
As long as you assemble the foundation properly (which is easy, by the way) and tighten all nuts, you should hear zero noise and experience zero wobblings.
If your current foundation is all squeaky and wobbly, time to upgrade to the Zinus SmartBase foundation.
Construction and Design
All Zinus SmartBase foundations have an all-steel construction. That's one of the reasons they can support so much weight.
The larger sizes (full, queen, king, and cal king) have 12 points of contact with the floor (that is, 12 legs) with cross support between them. The smaller sizes have six legs.
This allows the foundation to take on a lot of weight and distribute it evenly across its structure.
As for aesthetics, there's nothing much to talk about. The SmartBase foundations are finished in black.
Price and Buying Options
Considering their sturdy construction and high weight capacity, the Zinus SmartBase foundations are priced very affordably. It's hard to find a heavy-duty foundation at the same price range.
All sizes of the three foundations cost under $200, with some sizes going for less than $100. Visit the official Zinus website for the latest prices and offers.
All the foundations are available in the usual sizes ranging from twin to Cal King.
Sleeping Experience and Customer Feedback
Most customers love the Zinus SmartBase foundation. It's as sturdy and supportive as they expected. Even heavier-bodied users and those with an extra-thick and heavy mattress say the foundations hold up well with no noise or wobbling.
Many users love the height of the foundation. Though it can get a bit too high if you have a thick mattress, the upside is that you get plenty of storage space underneath the bed.
The fact that they don't need to buy a box spring is also a big plus for customers, especially those on a budget.
One complaint we've seen from several customers is that the bars on the foundation can dig into your body if you have a thin foam mattress or you have a big body. Some customers had to get a foam topper or use a Bunkie board under the mattress to sleep comfortably.
Zinus offers a 5-year limited warranty on all their SmartBase foundations. The warranty covers manufacturing defects.
A big downside with this warranty is that you are responsible for the cost of shipping the foundation to and from their facility. Considering the weight of the foundation, you'll spend quite a bit just on freight.
Fortunately, there are very few reports of the foundation getting damaged. Most customers have had their foundation for two years or more, and it's still in very good shape.
All foundation purchases from the official Zinus website come with a 100-night trial period. If you don't like the foundation, contact Zinus to arrange a return.
If you buy from another retailer like Amazon, that retailer's return policy applies.
Delivery & Assembly
Zinus offers free shipping for their SmartBase foundation (when you order from the official website).
The foundation arrives with most of the assembly done. All you need to do is extend the legs and tighten the wing-nuts. You do not need any tools or a pro.
