How Do Loom & Leaf and Tuft & Needle Compare?

Similarities

They are both all-foam mattresses though they use different types of foam.

When it comes to sleeping experience, both perform impressively. They feel comfortable, have good back support, and there are no heating issues.

Both mattress companies offer third-party financing where you can pay in easy monthly installments.

Key Differences

Tuft & Needle has a very simple construction consisting of just two layers with a total height of 10 inches. Loom & Leaf is on the opposite end with four layers. It is also much thicker at 12 inches.

Regarding the foam used, Loom & Leaf goes with memory foam while Tuft & Needle uses its proprietary foam.

Another major difference is in the pricing. Loom & Leaf is a luxury mattress, so it’s no surprise that it starts at $849 and goes up to $1,899. Its budget competitor, on the other hand, starts at  and tops out at .

Tuft & Needle’s largest Cal King size is cheaper than Loom & Leaf’s smallest twin size!

You’ll get 20 days more to test your mattress if you buy Loom & Leaf. If you decide to keep it, the warranty is five years longer than Tuft & Needles. This is not surprising considering that you are spending double the price of the Tuft & Needle to buy a Loom & Leaf.

Mattress Construction

Loom & Leaf

Loom and Leaf construction

Loom & Leaf has four layers of foam and a quilted organic cotton cover. Here are the foam layers.

4lb gel memory foam–This is the main comfort layer and the one that gives Loom & Leaf its signature luxury feel. It’s soft and contours around your body in a cozy hug. It’s great for pressure relief especially for those with back or joint pain. It is infused with cooling gel and phase change material to keep heat away and has an additional laminated gel panel to enhance cooling. It also has pinholes that carry heat away from the surface of the mattress.

5lb visco-elastic memory foam –This layer enhances the plush feel of the Loom & Leaf mattress while also preventing excess sinkage. It ensures your spine is aligned naturally and that your hips and shoulders are not pressing uncomfortably into the mattress.

2” transition pad –This is a firmer support foam layer that holds up your weight and prevents the mattress from cratering. It’s especially beneficial for couples and heavier sleepers who put more pressure on the mattress.

6” base –The usual high-density polyfoam base for overall support and longevity.

As I mentioned, the cover is organic cotton. So it feels soft and cool. It is quilted with a thin slice of foam to make it feel plusher and natural thistle for fire protection.

Tuft & Needle

TUFT & NEEDLE Original Mattress - Queen

The original Tuft & Needle had three layers, similar to most online mattresses. But they later reduced this to 2 to improve cooling and pressure relief. The original mattress was a bit too firm for people’s liking, as well.

Here are the two layers of the current Tuft & Needle.

  • Top Layer: 3” Adaptive foam –This is a proprietary foam developed by Tuft & Needle. It has the best properties of memory foam and latex foam. So it feels firm and supportive yet soft enough to be comfortable. It also stays cool and has more bounce than Loom & Leaf.
  • Foundation Layer: 7” Polyfoam base – This layer provides compression support, preventing the mattress from sagging.

The cover is a blend of micro polyamide, a cotton-like fabric that is cool and breathable and polyester, which makes the cover soft and tear-resistant.

There is also a fire retardant-free fire sock protecting the foam.

Comfort and Firmness

Loom & Leaf

Loom and Leaf firmness

There are two comfort levels of the Loom & Leaf mattress:

  • Loom & Leaf Relaxed Firm, which is the medium firm option, and
  • Loom & Leaf Firm.

The Relaxed Firm rate about a 6/10 where ten is the firmest. It’s the most comfortable choice for most types of sleepers and works well for all kinds of sleeping positions. It’s also the best choice if you have back problems.

The Loom & Leaf Firm is even firmer, rating a 8/10. It’s great if you prefer ‘floating’ on top of the mattress. It also provides more support for heavier sleepers and couples.

Remember that you can return your mattress if you don’t like it. So don’t worry about buying an uncomfortable mattress.

Tip: If you are not sure which comfort level is best for you, pick the Relaxed Firm. It’ll most likely give you the sleeping experience you are looking for.

Tuft & Needle

TUFT & NEEDLE Original Mattress - Queen

Tuft & Needle feels slightly firmer than the L&L Relaxed Firm. On average, the firmness is around 6.5/10.

It feels firmer than Loom & Leaf, probably because of the adaptive foam used in the top layer. This foam feels more like latex foam than memory foam.

Unfortunately, there are no other firmness options.

While Tuft & Needle is ideal for most kinds of sleepers, back and stomach sleepers may feel more comfortable with it.

For side sleepers who need more contouring, I recommend the Loom & Leaf Relaxed Firm.

And if you need something firmer than Tuft & Needle, try the Loom & Leaf Firm.

Sleeping Experience

Loom & Leaf

Loom and Leaf mattress

Loom & Leaf is a luxury mattress. It feels far more luxurious than most foam mattresses.

The gel memory foam provides a soft, plush and pressure-relieving top surface that cuddles your body and helps you fall to sleep faster. Each comfort level is then designed in a specific way to ensure it feels just right.

The Relaxed Firm is soft but without feeling ‘swampy.’ The Firm is more rigid but without pressing on your bones and joints.

The mattress keeps its cool really well. The breathable cover and the gel memory foam layer actively move heat away from the mattress.

There is minimal motion transfer. Edge support is also quite good for a foam mattress and initial off-gassing is slight and fades away within hours.

Tuft & Needle

TUFT & NEEDLE Original Mattress - Queen

Tuft & Needle may feel a bit too firm when you first lie on it, but quickly softens as it adapts to your body and sleeping position.

It’s definitely not as luxurious as the Loom & Leaf, but it’s still pretty comfortable. I especially love how bouncy it feels.

Because it’s thinner than Loom & Leaf and has only two layers, it may feel a bit uncomfortable for plus size sleepers. I’ve seen other customers complain about pressure on the shoulders and hips.

If you have a bigger body but would still like to get the Tuft & Needle, consider also buying a memory foam topper.

But for most people, the Tuft & Needle is fine. It feels firm enough to support the back yet still soft enough to relieve pressure on your hips, lower back, and shoulders.

Although it sleeps warmer than the Loom and Leaf, the Tuft and Needle mattress does not really get hot thanks to the breathable cover and cooling adaptive foam.

Edge support is OK, and motion control is excellent.

Warranty and Returns

Loom & Leaf

Saatva Mattress features

Loom & Leaf gives customers 120 days to test out their mattress and decide if they want to keep it. Unfortunately, you have to pay a $99 shipping fee when you return the mattress. You can request the other comfort option or just opt for a full refund (minus the shipping fee).

The warranty is 15 years long. If you make a claim, Loom & Leaf will decide whether to replace or repair the mattress. You’ll only be responsible for the $99 shipping fee.

There is a second warranty option called the Fairness Replacement Option. This is a prorated warranty where you pay a percentage of the original purchase price to get a new mattress. The percentage you pay will depend on which year of the warranty you make a claim.

Tuft & Needle

TUFT & NEEDLE Original Mattress - Queen

Tuft & Needle has a 100-night trial period. Unlike Loom & Leaf, returns are free.

The warranty is ten years long and is non-prorated. Tuft & Needle will cover all replacement or repair costs in the event of a claim.
