Amerisleep was one of the first online-only mattress companies to launch. They started making mattresses in 2007 and have since become a household name in the mattress-in-a-box industry. They sell five mattresses with comfort levels varying from extra-firm to extra-soft.

Loom and Leaf is a subsidiary of the Saatva Company, the makers of the acclaimed Saatva mattress. The Loom and Leaf is a luxury memory foam mattress that comes in two comfort levels. With every mattress purchased, customers can get the new mattress set up for free and their old mattress was taken away also for free.

Amerisleep vs. Loom and Leaf: Summary

If you are in a hurry, here's a quick comparison between Amerisleep and Loom & Leaf.

Price: A queen size Loom and Leaf mattress currently costs the same as an Amerisleep AS3 queen mattress. Loom and Leaf is more expensive than AS1 and AS2 but cheaper than the AS4 and AS5 luxury Amerisleep mattresses.

Feel: The Loom and Leaf mattress is available in two comfort levels while Amerisleep offers five firmness options. In addition, Amerisleep offers hybrid variants that are more supportive and responsive.

Cooling: Both mattresses have average cooling performance. Cooling gel and open cell foam improve temperature control but many hot sleepers will find both mattresses a tad too warm. Amerisleep hybrid mattresses are the exception. They sleep much cooler than the all-foam options.

Warranty and trial: Amerisleep offers a 100-night sleep trial and a 20-year prorated warranty. Loom and Leaf offers a 120-night sleep trial and a 15-year non-prorated warranty. You can also choose a prorated option that offers full mattress replacement.

How Do Amerisleep and Loom and Leaf Compare?

Similarities

To start with, both are memory foam mattresses. You’ll experience the classic memory foam feel with either mattress.

Both are also luxury mattresses that are far less expensive than the luxury mattresses available in brick and mortar stores.

Loom and Leaf’s queen costs just $1,599 while an Amerisleep Queen ranges between $1,199 and $2,099 depending on the comfort level.

Key Differences

Amerisleep provides five choices, while Loom and Leaf offers only two.

Loom and Leaf offer Relaxed Firm (medium) and Firm configurations.

Amerisleep offers AS1, AS2, AS3, AS4 and AS5 comfort options. AS1 is the firmest while AS5 is the softest. These are the same versions that previously went by the names Americana, Revere, Liberty, Colonial, and Independence.

Another key difference is in the warranties and returns policies.

Loom and Leaf is the better choice here – they offer a 120-day home trial period and a 15-year non-prorated warranty. In contrast, Amerisleep offers a 100-night trial period and a 20-year warranty with the last ten years prorated.

There's also a difference in the two companies' shipping policies. Amerisleep ships free to all contiguous states and charges for shipping outside continental US. Loom and Leaf charges a flat $99 shipping fee to locations within continental US. This fee includes free white glove delivery and old mattress removal.

Price

In general, Loom and Leaf is the better buy of the two, although Amerisleep's firmest choice is pretty close.

Mattress Construction

Amerisleep

Amerisleep vs Loom and Leaf

One of the most interesting components of the Amerisleep mattress is their cover, which is made using a special fabric called Celliant.

Celliant is not like another run of the mill cotton or polyester covers. It is embedded with minerals that react with heat.

This cover literally converts your body heat into infrared light, which keeps the mattress cool.

How cool is that?

Below the cover, the number and type of layers will depend on which mattress you buy.

Amerisleep vs Loom and Leaf

Bio-Pur foam (in all the mattresses) –This is a plant-based foam with a large-cell design to improve contouring and keep the mattress cool. It provides instant contouring as soon as you hit the mattress.

Active Flex layer (in AS5)–This layer is found only in the softest comfort level. It provides contouring and responsiveness. This ensures that even though the mattress is very soft, you don’t experience a ‘stuck’ feeling.

Affinity layer (in AS2, AS3, AS4, AS5) – Only AS1, the firmest mattress, lacks an affinity layer. This is a transition foam layer between the comfort and support sections. It provides compression support, responsiveness, and even weight distribution.

SMT layer (in AS2, AS3, AS4, AS5) – Again, only AS1 doesn’t have the Surface Modification Technology layer. SMT is a system consisting of textured channels that improve air circulation and pressure relief.

Bio-core base (in all the mattresses) Each mattress has a Bio-core base designed to provide overall support, lumbar alignment and mattress longevity.

Loom and Leaf Construction

Loom and Leaf construction

Loom and Leaf use a similar construction. The only thing that varies between their two comfort choices is foam density.

Each Loom and Leaf is draped in an organic cotton cover quilted with a thin slice of foam and natural thistle for fire protection. As a result, this mattress feels soft and plush on top.

Below the cover there are three foam layers plus a transition layer.

Gel memory foam – This is the main comfort and cooling layer. It consists of gel-infused memory foam. This layer has a special ‘inverted’ design to boost air circulation. In addition to the gel infused into the foam, there is a laminated gel panel on the upper side of this layer. It boosts cooling and provides enhanced lumbar support.

5lb Visco-elastic memory foam core–This layer provides body contouring and support.

2” transition pad –This layer provides a seamless transition from the comfort layers above to the support base below. It enhances compression support and improves weight distribution especially for couples and heavier sleepers.

6” base –This high-density foam layer provides overall support and longevity to the mattress.

Comfort and Firmness

Amerisleep Comfort Choices

Amerisleep vs Loom and Leaf

Being a luxury mattress, you can expect a certain plushness in all Amerisleep mattresses. The actual firmness will depend on the mattress you pick. Here is the firmness rating for the mattresses (1 – very soft, 10 – very firm)

  • AS1 –firm (7.5/10)
  • AS2 – medium firm (6.5/10)
  • AS3 – medium (5.5/10)
  • AS4 – medium soft (4/10)
  • AS5 – soft (3.5/10)

AS3, previously called Liberty, is the most popular option. Its balanced firmness is ideal for most people including back, stomach, side and combo sleepers. This is also the best option for people with back problems.

Amerisleep vs Loom and Leaf

AS1 and AS2 are best for back and stomach sleepers and anyone who loves ‘floating’ on their mattress. I also recommend it for plus size sleepers. It provides better compression support.

AS4 and AS5 are best for side sleepers and anyone who prefers that extra-plush feeling in their mattress.

Loom and Leaf Comfort Choices

Loom and Leaf firmness

Loom and Leaf also have that signature plush feeling you only get from luxury hotel mattresses. The quilted cover feels especially soft and luxurious.

The Relaxed firm is a medium firm comfort level. It is the best option for most people. It feels firm and supportive yet also soft and comfortable. But it’s not as plush as an Amerisleep’s AS3 mattress (its Amerisleep equivalent).

The Firm option is great for stomach and back sleepers. While not uncomfortably hard, it feels like you are floating on the mattress. Sinkage is much less than in the Relaxed Firm.

The Relaxed Firm is around 6/10, and the Firm is 8/10.

Sleeping Experience

Amerisleep

Amerisleep sleeping positions

Your sleeping experience will depend on your chosen comfort level.

If you want a soft, extra plush experience, buy the AS5. If you want soft but not too much of it, try the AS4. If you’d rather sleep on a firm mattress but still want a bit of softness, try the medium firm AS2.

If you are not sure which one is right for you, go for the medium AS3. You can always return it if you don’t like how it feels.

All mattresses offer excellent cooling properties. The Celliant cover wicks-away excess body heat, leaving you feeling cool and cozy. The open-cell foam in the Bio-Pur foam dissipates away any heat and moisture that gets into the mattress.

The SMT channels in four of the mattresses further boost airflow, keeping the mattress cool and fresh.

There is little to no motion transfer, and edge support is good enough.

Regarding support and contouring, Amerisleep has the edge over Loom and Leaf. The Amerisleep mattress contours so perfectly to your body, relieving pressure on your lower back, hips, and shoulders.

Loom and Leaf

Loom and Leaf mattress

Loom and Leaf are not as luxurious as Amerisleep but still feels a hella lot comfier compared to cheaper options.

The quilted cover feels soft, and the top memory foam layer responds instantly to your body weight and sleeping position.

The mattress is not as bouncy as Amerisleep. But it’s just as good when it comes to cooling, eliminating motion transfer and edge support.

Warranty and Returns

Amerisleep

Amerisleep vs Loom and Leaf

You can return your Ameriskeep mattress at no cost if you don’t like it within the 100-night trial period. You can get a full refund or request an exchange with another mattress.

Amerisleep requires that customers sleep on a mattress for at least 30 nights before initiating a return.

Returned mattresses are donated to charity or recycled.

Amerisleep vs Loom and Leaf

Amerisleep's warranty is 20 years long. For the first ten years, it’s a full non-prorated warranty and Amerisleep will replace or repair your mattress at no cost to you.

For the final ten years, you’ll pay 50% of the original cost to get a replacement. You will also be responsible for shipping cots.

Loom and Leaf

Loom and Leaf

Unfortunately, Loom and Leaf does not offer free returns, one of the hallmarks of the bed-in-a-box industry. You’ll pay $99 to ship it back to them. You can request an exchange with another mattress or get a full refund.

You do have 120 days to test out the mattress, however.

If you decide to keep it, it will be covered by L&L's 15-year non-prorated warranty. For the entire warranty period, Loom and Leaf will cover all repair/replacement costs. You’ll only be responsible for the $99 shipping fee (each way).

L&L also offers a prorated warranty option, called the Fairness Replacement Option. In this scheme, you pay a prorated percentage charge of the original price depending on when you make a claim. They’ll send you a brand new mattress AND you can keep your old one.

Shipping and Delivery

Amerisleep

Amerisleep vs Loom and Leaf

Amerisleep provides free shipping via FedEx within the continental US.

For customers in Alaska and Hawaii, contact customer service for a shipping quote.

The mattress will arrive at your door in 2-5 business days. Be prepared to carry it inside and set it up yourself since Amerisleep does not provide white glove delivery service.

Loom and Leaf

Loom & Leaf delivery

Loom and Leaf delivers within the continental US only. They used to charge a $99 shipping fee, but eliminated it. Shipping is free, and you get free white glove delivery plus old mattress disposal.

So all you need to do is order the mattress and sleep on it. Loom and Leaf will handle everything in between for free.

The free white-glove service is really nice touch at this low price point – I guess that’s why they charge for returns.

Enter your zip code on Loom and Leaf’s site, and they’ll tell you how long it will take to deliver to your location.

Foundation and Frame

Memory foam mattresses are heavy.

You'll need flat, sturdy bed frame/platform for both of these mattresses.

Amerisleep

Amerisleep vs Loom and Leaf

You can place the Amerisleep mattress directly on the floor, on a slatted frame (slats no more than 3 inches apart) or on an adjustable base.

If you use a box spring, make sure it’s new and add a moisture-resistant 3.4” plywood on top. It’s best if you use a box spring designed specifically to support memory foam mattresses.

Loom and Leaf

Loom and Leaf by Saatva

You can use the Loom and Leaf mattress with a memory foam-specific box spring, a solid foundation or a slatted platform with the slats no more than 4 inches apart. You can also use it on an adjustable base.

For Queen and King mattresses, you should use a platform with center leg support.

Care and Cleaning

mattress cleaning

Amerisleep

Amerisleep mattresses have removable covers you can wash. But it’s strongly recommended that you get a mattress protector. If you are concerned about spills, which will void the warranty, get a waterproof protector.

You do not need to rotate or flip the mattress.

Loom and Leaf

Because of the quilting, you cannot remove or wash the Loom and Leaf cover. So I would strongly suggest you get a mattress protector.

As with the Amerisleep mattress, no flipping or turning is necessary.

2 thoughts on “Amerisleep vs Loom and Leaf Mattress: An In-Depth Comparison”

    • I’d say Loom and Leaf is better for motion transfer.

Amerisleep, however, gives you more comfort options – and most side sleepers like their mattress softer than L&L provides.
