GhostBed vs. Nectar Comparison

Similarities

Both GhostBed and Nectar are all-foam mattresses. They do not contain any innersprings or coils.

They are medium firm mattresses and come in only one comfort level.

Cooling is a major focus for both mattresses with GhostBed using aerated latex foam and gel-infused memory foam to keep the heat away. Nectar uses gel memory foam and an open-cell foam design.

Price-wise, they are in a similar budget category. GhostBed starts at  while Nectar starts at $499 before discounts.

Shipping is free for both mattresses, but customers in Alaska and Hawaii pay extra.

Key Differences

Both are all-foam mattresses but differ in construction and the type of foam. GhostBed uses a combination of latex foam and memory foam, which gives it a plush yet responsive feel. Nectar uses memory foam only, giving it a softer and less responsive feel.

There is also a big difference in warranties and trial periods. GhostBed has a 101-day return period and a 20-year warranty. Nectar stands out with its 365-day trial period and forever warranty.

One other important difference to note is that Nectar offers white glove delivery/setup and old mattress removal for $149, while GhostBed does not offer that.

Mattress Construction

GhostBed

GhostBed Mattress-Queen 11 Inch-Cooling Gel Memory Foam-Mattress in a Box-Most Advanced Adaptive Gel Memory Foam–Coolest Mattress in America-Made in the USA–Industry Leading 20 Year Warranty

Let’s start with the cover. It feels soft and stretchy thanks to a blend of polyester and viscose. While it may seem thin, it won’t tear easily. This also helps with cooling and breathability.

Under the cover are three foam layers totaling to a height of 11.5”.

1.5” aerated latex foam–This is the layer that makes the GhostBed feel more bouncy than Nectar. To boost the natural cooling capabilities of latex foam, the layer has an aerated design to increase airflow.

2” gel memory foam – Gel-infused memory foam provides more cooling power especially during the warmer nights. When you lie down on the mattress, this layer contours around your body, providing pressure relief especially on your lower back.

7” base – a polyfoam base holds up the other mattress layers. It provides compression support (to keep you from sinking) and keeps the mattress in shape for years.

Nectar

Nectar vs Purple Mattress

Nectar uses memory foam in its main layers. That’s why it is not as responsive (bouncy) as GhostBed. But it makes up for it with an extra-plush sleeping experience.

Here are the different foam layers.

1” quilted gel memory foam –This layer keeps the mattress cool throughout the night. Memory foam is vulnerable to heating. The gel directly absorbs the excess body heat and dissipates it out of the mattress.

1” gel memory foam – Another layer of gel-infused memory foam helps with cooling while also providing instant contouring and pressure relief. If you have a bad back or an aching hip, the memory foam prevents any painful pressure points.

3” high-density memory foam –The memory foam in this layer is 3.5lbs (per cubic foot) in density compared to the 1lb density of the layer above it. The higher density allows the mattress to hold up your body and keep your spine naturally aligned.

Base layer –For couples and heavier sleepers, the 3-inch support core above is not enough. The base layer provides further compression support to hold up the increased weight and support your lumbar area.

The cover is quilted and made from a material called Tencel. Tencel is often used as a cotton alternative. It is softer, cooler and better at moisture wicking.

Comfort and Firmness

Both are medium firm mattresses. Unfortunately, you don’t get to choose among several comfort levels. If you want a mattress with multiple comforts choices to check out Amerisleep, Brooklyn Bedding or the customizable Luxi mattress. (link to individual reviews)

GhostBed

GhostBed Mattress-Queen 11 Inch-Cooling Gel Memory Foam-Mattress in a Box-Most Advanced Adaptive Gel Memory Foam–Coolest Mattress in America-Made in the USA–Industry Leading 20 Year Warranty

GhostBed is a 6.5/10 with ten being very firm. The extra firmness is because of the latex layer on top.

But it is not too firm that it will cause any pressure points. The top layer is only 1.5 inches thick so you’ll still feel the soft memory foam underneath. Heavier sleepers may experience a softer comfort feeling because they sink in a bit more.

Nectar

Nectar vs Purple Mattress

Nectar is around 5.5/10 in terms of firmness. It feels softer because it uses memory foam in the top layer. Memory foam is naturally softer and more contouring than latex.

But don’t worry about feeling stuck. The high-density memory foam core does a good job of holding you up.

Both mattresses are ideal for most types of sleepers. But if you prefer a fairly firm mattress, I recommend GhostBed. It may also feel more comfortable for stomach and back sleepers.

Nectar is best for combination, side sleepers and anyone who prefers a softer plusher mattress.

Sleeping Experience

Both are all-around great mattresses with slightly different sleeping experiences.

GhostBed

GhostBed Mattress-Queen 11 Inch-Cooling Gel Memory Foam-Mattress in a Box-Most Advanced Adaptive Gel Memory Foam–Coolest Mattress in America-Made in the USA–Industry Leading 20 Year Warranty

In the first couple of minutes when you sleep on the GhostBed, it might feel a bit too firm. This is the latex foam you are feeling. With time, the mattress softens as your encounter the softer memory foam underneath.

The mattress settles into a comfortable firm-soft balance. It holds you up nicely but also allows a bit of sinkage for pressure relief.

Cooling is not a problem. The top latex layer (latex is already naturally good at cooling) is aerated, and the memory foam underneath is infused with gel. This keeps excess body heat and moisture flowing out of the mattress.

There is minimal motion transfer. You won’t feel your partner getting up in the middle of the night. Edge support is great, and there is minimal off-gassing (fades away completely in 1-2 days).

Nectar

Nectar vs Purple Mattress

Nectar has that classic memory foam plushness. It swallows your body but without getting you stuck in a swamp. It’ll feel just as supportive if you have a bigger physique. I’ve seen customers say they weigh over 200lbs and the mattress is perfect for them.

The mattress stays cool despite the fact that it is memory foam. There is gel everywhere to conduct heat away from the mattress, and the foam has an open-cell design to increase airflow.

Motion transfer is very little. If you have a fidgety partner, you’ll sleep comfortably through the night.

Edge support is not as good as in the GhostBed, but it’s not too bad either. The reduced edge support is only noticeable if you sit at the very edge.

There is a bit of off-gassing when you open the mattress, but it fades away quickly, usually a couple of days or less.

Warranty and Returns

GhostBed

GhostBed’s fine print is pretty standard. You get 101 days to test the mattress (but only if you buy it on the official website). Returns are free, but you must use the mattress for at least 30 days before requesting a return.

Ghostbed vs Purple

The warranty runs for 20 years. The first ten years are non-prorated while in the final ten years you have to pay a percentage of the original purchase price to get a new mattress.

Nectar

Nectar Sleep mattress review - forever warranty

Nectar is the only online mattress I’ve seen so far that offers a 365-day trial period. You can test the mattress without any pressure for a full year. That’s awesome especially for those of us who are skeptical about buying a mattress online without testing it.This is a no-risk purchase.

If you decide to keep the mattress, you get a forever warranty. Of course, that doesn’t mean that the mattress will last forever. But they’ll cover you for as long as you own it.

The best part is that it is non-prorated. They only ask that you pay $50 for shipping each way after the first ten years.

If you don’t want the forever warranty, they have another one called the choice option. Under this warranty, after ten years you pay 50% of the original purchase price, and you get a new mattress. You can keep your old one.

Care and Cleaning

GhostBed

You should only spot clean the GhostBed cover. Remove it and use cold water and mild detergent on the stains. Make sure it completely dries before putting it back on. Do not machine wash or dry clean it.

To avoid stains and spills, get a mattress protector.

Rotate the mattress every six months.

Nectar

The only spot cleans the Nectar mattress cover. Do not machine wash or dry clean it as it can damage the fabric.

A mattress protector is recommended.
