Leesa along with Patagonia and Ben & Jerry’s are B Corporations. Here’s What That Means.

Leesa Sleep, the maker of the highly popular Leesa memory foam mattress, belongs to a special group of companies that also includes big brands like Patagonia, Ben & Jerry’s and Natura.

They are called B Corporations or just B Corps.

These companies have committed themselves to pursuing community and environmental accountability with the same zeal that they seek profits.

Traditional companies are all about profits.

B Corps balance profits with purpose.

Here's how B-Lab, the organization that certifies B Corps, explains these types of organizations:

“Certified B Corporations are businesses that meet the highest standards of verified social and environmental performance, public transparency, and legal accountability to balance profit and purpose. B Corps are accelerating a global culture shift to redefine success in business and build a more inclusive and sustainable economy.”

B-Lab hands out certifications to companies that met these standards. One of those companies is Leesa.

Leesa Social Impact

Leesa became a certified B Corp in September 2016.

Since then, they have enacted a number of social and environmental programs. In fact, they are the most socially active online mattress company.

Here’s what they’ve been doing in the last couple of years.

One-Ten Program

This is currently their biggest social program.

For every 10 mattresses they sell, they donate one to charities and nonprofits.

To date, they have donated more than 30k mattresses to over a thousand different organizations. These include homeless shelters, community centers and group homes.

Leesa is one of the most popular online mattresses. So they’ll probably make several thousand more donations in the next few years.

One-Earth Program

One area where B corporations have to commit to focus on is environmental protection. Leesa takes that responsibility seriously.

The Leesa memory foam mattress uses CertiPUR-US certified foams.

These foams are guaranteed to be free of chemicals that can harm their customers or the environment (read our full Leesa mattress review).

That’s not all.

Through their One-Earth program in which they collaborate with the Arbor Day Foundation, they plant one tree for every mattress sold.

That’s a lot of trees.

Their goal is to plant a million trees by 2025 but I have a feeling they’ll hit that goal way before then.

One-Community Program

In addition to donating mattresses to charities, they also donate their time and effort to local organizations. These include shelters and food banks through their One-Community program.

About B Corporations

A B Corp is not a legally defining entity.

Do not confuse it with a Benefit Corporation which is a legal corporate entity in 33 states plus the District of Columbia.

There’s really no law or legal agreement binding B Corps from carrying out programs for social and environmental good.

They simply make a commitment and stick to it.

For companies to get this certification and preserve it, they have to attain a minimum score of 80. Leesa has a score of 93.7 out of a possible 200.

That’s not too bad.

Companies like Patagonia are way ahead at 151 so Leesa still has a ways to go.

Leesa B Corp Score

Leesa gets its highest score in Community which is not a surprise considering their deep involvement in community programs.

So what does Leesa being a B Corp have to do with you buying their mattress?

Well, you can be sure the mattress is manufactured responsibly and you get a chance to contribute to important social and environmental protection programs.
