Time for another online mattress heavyweight matchup.

This time, I'm comparing Leesa, the memory foam champ vs. Helix, the leading custom-fit mattress sold online.

There are many differences between these two mattresses, to be sure.

Leesa sells the best medium-firm all-foam mattress we've tested, so far. It uses three foam layers to provide excellent comfort, pressure relief and support.

Helix Sleep launched a year after Leesa with a truly unique product: a great custom-fit hybrid foal-coil mattress configured to meet your unique needs.

They cost about the same.

So… which one is right for you?

What's In This Comparison

In this detailed comparison, I will compare the Leesa and Helix mattresses on a variety of factors including comfort, order process, construction, support, cooling, warranty and of course, price.

My goal in this comparison is to give you the detail you need to make your own decision.

For more details on each mattress, read my Leesa review and my Helix review.

Leesa vs Helix: Which One Should You Buy?

There are many differences between Leesa and Helix products.

For example, Helix mattresses incorporate pocketed coils as the support system in all of their mattresses, whereas the original Leesa mattress is a 100% foam product.

Leesa also only comes in one comfort level, medium-firm.  In contrast, Helix offers a wide range of models, thicknesses and comfort choices for their customers. Price-wise, the Leesa is slightly less expensive after discounts and coupons are factored in.

So which one is right for you?

Leesa vs Casper - Leesa logo

I gave the Leesa mattress an overall rating of 4.6 out of 5.0.

Buy the Leesa if:

  • You prefer the cradling feel of a memory foam mattress.
  • You're OK with a medium-firm comfort level (that's all they sell).
  • You like to save money.

Leesa vs Helix

I gave the Helix mattress an overall rating of 4.7 out of 5.0.

Buy the Helix if:

  • You and your sleeping partner need two different firmness levels in a single mattress
  • You need more support
  • You are a mattress connoisseur and know exactly what you want

Mattress Construction

Leesa

Leesa is a 10-inch foam mattress consisting of three layers:

  • 2 inches of LSA200 foam (comfort layer) – this is a proprietary foam designed to blend the contouring power of memory foam and the responsiveness and firm support you only find in latex foam. It feels a bit more like latex than traditional memory foam.
  • 2 inches of memory foam (support layer) – Leesa added a layer of memory foam underneath to make sure the mattress provides good pressure relief. Placing the memory foam in the second layer also ensures that the mattress does not get hot, a general problem for mattresses with memory foam on the top layer.
  • 6 inches of support foam (foundation layer) – a thick layer of high-density support foam provides overall support to the mattress and is of particular importance in durability. For heavier-bodied sleepers, the base layer also helps in compression support where it prevents the top layers from sinking in too much.

Helix

Leesa vs Helix

The Helix mattress stands out in its design and construction. Helix does not sell a single mattress, per se.

Instead, each mattress they build is configured to order to meet each customer's unique needs.

They use an online quiz to do this.

When you visit their official website, you will be asked to take a short quiz that asks you questions about your sleeping needs and preferences – such as your preferred sleeping position, your height, your weight and whether you are heat-sensitive. You can also add your partner’s preferences.

Using these details, Helix configures a custom mattress that meets your needs. If you have a partner with different needs, they can also design a split mattress.

While the order of the layers and the foam density used will vary from mattress to mattress, here the components every Helix mattress will have:

  • 2 inches of Helix Dynamic foam – Helix is yet another mattress company that uses proprietary foam. Like LSA200, the Dynamic foam is designed to straddle both latex and memory foam. So it feels soft and pressure-relieving like memory foam yet relatively firm and bouncy like latex foam.
  • 2.5 inches of pocketed coils – you’ll often find pocketed coils in high-end mattresses only. So it’s nice to see them in the much lower priced Helix mattress. This layer plays a crucial role in contouring and pressure distribution. Individual coils move and shift based on your weight and sleeping position.
  • 2 inches of transitional foam – separating the pocketed coil layer from the base layer is a slice of transitional foam. It boosts the mattress support and prevents sagging especially for those with a heavier body.
  • 4 inch base layer – the base is smaller than the usual 6-inches in most mattresses. But combined with the transitional layer above, they are enough to provide robust support and stability to the entire mattress.

Comfort and Firmness

Leesa

Leesa Mattress Construction

Many all-foam mattresses struggle to achieve universal comfort.

Without the use of pocket coils, it is hard to design a mattress that perfectly contours around the body’s angles and curves and one that moves along with the sleeper.

Comparing all-foam mattress brands, Leesa is one of the best, noticeably better than the similarly-priced Casper.

The LSA200 foam used in their top layer makes a big difference in how the mattress responds. You would be forgiven to think it is a spring mattress because of how responsive it is.

The memory foam layer underneath then provides a soft plush experience that you only get with luxury hotel mattresses.

Overall the Leesa mattress has a medium-firm comfort level. This is the sweet spot for most people, catering to all kinds of sleepers regardless of sleeping position or physique.

Helix

Leesa vs Helix

What your Helix mattress will feel like depends on how you answered your pre-purchase quiz.

For example, if you sleep on your side or have a slim physique, Helix will most likely design a softer mattress for you. If on the other hand you sleep on your stomach or have a heavier body, your mattress may feel a bit firmer.

Their goal is to ensure that each customer gets the kind of mattress that is right for them and will give them the best sleeping experience.

Couples can also design a mattress that fits each person’s preferences. Your side of the bed can be softer while his or her side is firmer.

The options are literally endless.

I recommend visiting their website and filling out the questionnaire to learn which mattress setup is right for you.

Sleeping Experience

Leesa

Leesa vs Helix

If you prefer an all-foam mattress, then I highly recommend buying the Leesa.

The Leesa mattress is one of our highest-rated choices, thanks to its ability to provide a cool, comfortable, supportive and no-disturbance sleeping experience.

The LSA200 and memory foam layers work really well together to provide support and comfort. The top layer is slightly firmer and bouncier, to ensure it holds your weight and aligns your back properly. The second layer provides pressure relief for force points like your lower back, hips, and shoulders.

The top LSA200 foam is also a cooling layer. Its bottom side contains grooves that allow airflow within the mattress to keep the mattress dry and fresh smelling. The fresh part is important, because foam mattresses often get stale if they trap odors inside.

Finally, the top LSA200 foam layer reduces motion transfer significantly. For couples sharing a bed, this means you won't have to worry about waking each other up in the middle of the night as you toss around or get up to use the bathroom.

Helix

Leesa vs Helix

Helix provides a personalized luxury sleeping experience.

The top layer of Dynamic foam is the first one you will encounter after the soft and stretchy polyester cover. This proprietary foam feels soft and bouncy, like memory foam and latex mixed.

The 2.5-inch layer of pocketed coils underneath is what creates the full luxury experience. When you lie on the mattress, the coils move to contour around your body. It feels like being wrapped in a soft hug. The bounciness created by the coils is a bonus – especially for amorous couples.

The Helix mattress doesn’t use memory foam, but instead relies on a layer of individually wrapped coils to allow free air flow, taking excess heat and trapped odors out of the mattress.

Warranty and Returns

Leesa

Leesa vs Helix

Leesa provides customers 100 nights for testing the mattress. But because it takes the time to normalize your body to the new sleeping surface, they recommend giving the mattress at least 30 days before you decide to make a return. If after a month it’s still not what you want, making a return is easy and quick.

Leesa will pick up the mattress from your home and donate it to charity or recycle it, and you’ll get a full refund.

If you decide to keep the mattress, it will be covered under a 10-year warranty. The warranty covers manufacturing defects and workmanship issues. Make sure you read the warranty in full to find out exactly what is covered and what is not.

In the event you need to claim your warranty, Leesa can either replace the mattress with a brand new one or repair it. You will not bear any costs except transport.

Read Leesa’s warranty & return policy to learn more.

Helix

Helix also provides the standard 100 days for testing the mattress. Although they do not say it in their terms and conditions, it is a good idea to sleep on the mattress for at least 30 days before initiating a return. If you still don’t like it, the mattress will be picked up, and you will get a full refund minus the initial delivery fee.

If you want an exchange, you can only get a differently sized mattress, not a different mattress design.

The warranty is also ten years-long. It covers manufacturing defects and workmanship issues. Read the full warranty statement to check what is covered and what could render it void. If you request a replacement or repair, Helix will cater for all costs except transport, which is on you.

But if the Helix discovers that the damage is a manufacturing fault, you will be refunded shipping costs up to $100.

Read Helix’s warranty & return policy to learn more.

Shipping and Delivery Options

Leesa

Leesa provides free shipping to all 50 states in the United States. Shipping is done via UPS ground and takes between 4 and ten business days.

The reason it takes this long is that each mattress is made on order. So it takes between 3 and five business days to manufacture the mattress and 1 to 5 business days for UPS to deliver it to you.

Leesa does not offer any special delivery services, but they recommend using UPS My Choice, a special service that offers additional features such as rerouting your delivery, specified day delivery, and delivery alerts.

Note that Leesa also sells their mattress in Germany, Canada, and the UK.

Helix

Leesa vs Helix

Helix also uses UPS ground to deliver mattresses to customers free of charge in all 50 states. They also deliver to Canada through a delivery fee and customs tax will be applied at checkout.

Like the Leesa mattress, each Helix bed is made on order. So the total delivery time can be anywhere from 6 to 10 days depending on your location.

Helix Sleep provides no special delivery or shipping services, but you can make your arrangements with UPS.

Price

Comparing Helix mattress vs. Leesa on price, Leesa is definitely the less expensive option.

Considering the endless customization options and the fact that it is an innerspring mattress, however, Helix's price is also quite reasonable.

Listed below is the price you will pay after discounts:

Size Leesa w/ discount Helix w/ discount

Twin XL $674 $600
Full $799 $750
Queen $874 $899
