How Do Lull and Tuft & Needle Compare?

Similarities

While they use different types of foam, both are medium-firm all-foam mattresses. No innersprings or support coils.

They are also budget mattresses though Tuft & Needle is a bit cheaper. If you are looking for an affordable but good quality mattress, either of these is a good choice.

Finally, they both have the same standard return period and warranty policies. They give customers 100 nights to try out the mattresses and provide a 10-year non-prorated warranty.

Key Differences

The main difference is in construction which results in a slightly different sleeping experience for each mattress.

Lull uses plush memory foam which creates a softer sleeping experience (though still in the medium-firm range). Tuft & Needle uses proprietary foam that combines the characteristics of latex and memory foam. It feels a bit firmer.

There is also a difference in the price.

Tuft & Needle is the cheaper option with its Queen size costing .

Lull’s Queen size is priced at .

However, you can get financing when purchasing either mattress.

Mattress Construction

Both mattress brands are all about simplicity. But that doesn’t mean they are any less comfortable or supportive than other mattresses. The simplicity also means you get to pay less for a great mattress.

Lull

Lull vs Tuft and Needle

Lull consists of three foam layers plus a removable cover. Let’s start with the cover.

It is a blend of polyester and rayon. Polyester gives it strength while rayon makes it cool, soft and comfortable. The cover is removable although you should only spot clean it.

Below the cover are three layers of foam as follows:

  • 1.5” gel memory foam –This is the main comfort and cooling layer. Memory foam provides contouring and pressure relief around your hips, shoulders, and back. The gel infused into the foam absorbs excess body heat and dissipates it away from the mattress. So even though you are sleeping directly on memory foam, you won’t experience any uncomfortable heating.
  • 1.5” transition foam–This layer prevents you from sinking in too much because of the memory foam. You get that comfortable ‘in the mattress’ experience but without feeling stuck. The higher-density foam in this layer distributes your weight and provides proper alignment for your lumbar area.
  • 7” base –A high-density base brings the mattress to a total thickness of 10 inches. The base provides additional compression support which prevents sagging and cratering.

Tuft & Needle

TUFT & NEEDLE Original Mattress - Queen

Originally Tuft & Needle had three layers. But there were complaints about it being too firm. So they redesigned the mattress into two layers. This improved pressure relief and cooling. Here are the two layers:

  • 3” Tuft & Needle Adaptive Foam –This is a proprietary foam that behaves like a blend of memory foam and latex foam. It feels firm and supportive for your back yet also soft enough to relieve pressure on your hips, lower back, and shoulders. Its latex-like cooling nature keeps the heat away at night.
  • 7” polyfoam base –The base provides anti-sagging support, ensuring the mattress stays comfortable and supportive for years.

Like Lull’s cover, Tuft & Needle’s cover is also a blend. It consists of polyester (for strength and softness) and a unique cotton-like material called Micro Polyamide which is breathable and wicks moisture quickly.

Comfort and Firmness

Both are medium firm mattresses and come with only one comfort option.

Lull

The Lull is a medium firm mattress, but it falls on the softer side because of the top memory foam layer. Out of 10 (10 being very firm), the Lull mattress ranks at around 5-6.

But the actual firmness you experience may vary depending on your body weight and sleeping position. Someone heavier (more than 200lbs) may experience more softness and sinkage.

Tuft & Needle

TUFT & NEEDLE Original Mattress - Queen

Tuft & Needle is also a medium firm mattress but on the firmer end of the range. It’s around a 6.5/10.

Because it feels firmer and hence has more compression support, I recommend the Tuft & Needle for large-bodied and size sleepers.

Both mattresses are great for all sleeping positions. But side sleepers may appreciate Lull’s softer feel more while back, stomach and combination sleepers will love the Tuft and Needle’s firmer feel.

Sleeping Experience

Lull

Lull vs Tuft and Needle

If you’ve ever slept on a memory foam mattress, the Lull mattress is something close to that but without the heat and clamminess. It also doesn’t sag like other memory foam mattresses.

It feels soft and plush yet also supportive. As I described it, you’ll be on the mattress but without feeling stuck.

Pressure relief is great which is why I recommend it for those with back problems. The memory foam contours around your joints and muscles, ensuring you don’t experience any pressure points.

The transition and base layer provides plenty of support. It aligns your back and gives the mattress a bit of bounce.

The foams are great at absorbing disturbances, so motion transfer is virtually zero when your partner turns or wakes up in the middle of the night. The mattress stays cool, and edge support is not too bad for a memory foam mattress.

There might be a bit of a harmless smell when you unbox the mattress, but it goes away within a day or two. If you want to know more about lull mattress in a box, you can check out our in-depth lull mattress review.

Tuft & Needle

TUFT & NEEDLE Original Mattress - Queen

Tuft & Needle feels more like sleeping ‘on’ the mattress. There is less sinkage compared to the Lull mattress. But the Adaptive Foam is soft enough to provide just the right amount of sinkage for pressure relief.

The mattress may at first feel too firm. This is normal especially if you’ve been sleeping on an old or low-quality mattress. Give yourself a couple of weeks to adapt to it. This will also give the foam time to settle.

There is more bounce in the Tuft & Needle compared to Lull. So for couples looking for a good mattress for sex, I recommend this one.

Motion transfer is almost zero and edge support is great (both big pluses for couples).

There are no cooling issues, and any off-gassing you experience goes away in a few hours.

Warranty and Returns

Lull

Lull vs Tuft and Needle

Lull’s return and warranty policies are pretty standard.

Starting from the day the mattress is delivered, you have 100 nights to sleep on it and decide if you’d like to keep it. There is no catch and no pressure to keep the mattress.

After you’ve tried it out for two weeks (it may take up to 30 days to break in the mattress) and you still don’t like it, Lull will collect it from your home for free.

There are no fees or penalties for returning a mattress. You’ll get your full refund.

If you keep the mattress, you are covered by a ten-year warranty. It is a non-prorated warranty and covers all the usual stuff like sagging of more than an inch, broken zipper, and loose stitching.

Tuft & Needle

TUFT & NEEDLE Original Mattress - Queen

Tuft & Needle has similar standard policies.

You get a 100-night trial period. After a minimum period of 30 nights – to allow your body to acclimate to the new mattress – you can return it for free.

The company will either send someone to pick up the mattress, or they will work with you to find a nearby charity you can donate it to. You’ll receive a full refund less any shipping fees you had paid.

Note that for both companies, returned mattresses are no restocked. They are either recycled or given to charity.

Tuft & Needle’s warranty is ten years long and is non-prorated.

Shipping and Delivery

Lull

Lull vs Tuft and Needle

Lull mattresses are shipped from four locations in the US to shorten delivery time. After placing an order, your mattress will arrive in 1-4 business days.

Shipping is free for customers in the contiguous United States. For customers in Alaska and Hawaii, a subsidized shipping fee will be added at checkout.

Lull does not provide white glove delivery. The mattress will be delivered by FedEx to the closest entrance, and then it’s up to you to set it up.

Tuft & Needle

TUFT & NEEDLE Original Mattress - Queen

Tuft & Needle has an almost similar shipping policy. They deliver for free via FedEx only to the contiguous United States. For those in Alaska and Hawaii, additional shipping fees range between $120 and $190 depending on the mattress size.

The mattress will arrive in 2-5 days but could take as long as ten days for customers in Alaska and Hawaii.

There is no white glove delivery, but it’s easy to unbox and set up the mattress on your own.

Foundation and Frame

Lull

Lull vs Tuft and Needle

Lull works with any frame including box springs, a slatted base, a flat foundation or an adjustable base. You can also place it on the floor.

Tuft & Needle

TUFT & NEEDLE Original Mattress - Queen

Tuft & Needle work with all kinds of frames including adjustable bases. The most important thing is to make sure that the frame is sturdy and in good condition.

Both Tuft & Needle and Lull sell their frames and foundations that you can easily add to your mattress order.

Care and Cleaning

Lull vs. Tuft & Needle

Lull

Do not machine wash or dry clean the Lull cover. If it gets stained, unzip the cover and spot clean it with cold water and a mild detergent. Make sure it has dried before putting it back on. If possible, use a mattress protector.

Lull recommends rotating the mattress every 3 to 6 months.

Tuft & Needle

Do not machine wash or dry clean the Tuft & Needle cover. It should only be spot cleaned. To avoid stains and spills, get a mattress protector.

It is not necessary to rotate the mattress.
